The countdown is on for…. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta! The Fiesta runs October 1st through the 9th.
In 2019, there were 588 registered balloons at the fiesta. Famous for the “Albuquerque Box,” visitors flock to the city during Fiesta to witness the phenomenon that makes Albuquerque ideal for ballooning. The surrounding mountains, lower altitude near the river and calm winds that blow the balloons up and around in a box-like pattern, make it the perfect place for balloon aficionados.
There are nine days to attend balloon fiesta – from Oct. 1 to Oct. 9, 2022. Each session (morning or afternoon) costs $15. The event is Free for 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased on the Fiesta website, or you can buy them at the gate.
Tickets are $15 and are non-refundable. Keep in mind if the session is canceled because of poor weather, you can keep your ticket and use it to get into another session. Parking is $20.
Tips for the 2022 Balloon Fiesta:
Weekends are usually the busiest at fiesta. Avoid the traffic by biking to the event. There is a Free Bike Valet. The bike valet is located just north of the Anderson Abruzzo International Balloon Museum.

It’s OK to bring food to the Balloon Fiesta
Outside food and drinks can be brought into the park. This is helpful for parents with younger children. Coolers may be checked by security when you enter the park.
To see the beginning of the Mass Ascension of the balloons, you should ideally be inside the balloon park the park by 6 am. The morning session starts at 6 with the dawn patrol launching. The rest of the balloons start launching around 7 am.
Dress is layers. The morning will be chilly so grab a sweater, hat, and hot cocoa. Don’t forget to get a burrito at the fiesta. (The green chile will warm you up too!)
As the fiesta goes on and the sun comes out it will warm up so you will want to dress in layers. Wear sneakers or comfortable shoes so you can walk the field and get up close to your favorite balloons.
Here’s what’s free at the Balloon Fiesta
Don’t forget to ask for Free balloon trading cards (with all the fun stats about each balloon and where they are from). They are fun to collect as souvenirs for your kids.
Bring your children to Kids Day presented by KOB–TV on Oct. 6. At 4:30 am the Free kids goodie bag distribution begins (South of the Main Street Stage). The dawn patrol kicks off at 6 am and a Special Shape Rodeo at 7 am
