Albuquerque BioPark Zoo, formerly the Rio Grande Zoo, celebrates its 85th birthday this year, and there are a couple of ways to get free admission to the zoo as part of the birthday celebration.

  • If you were also born in 1927, you can get in free to the zoo any day with proof of age through September 1, 2012.
  • If you were born in 1985, visit the Zoo for free each Wednesday with ID through September 1, 2012.
  • For everybody else, one paying adult can still take up to four children free to the ABQ BioPark Zoo every Monday through August 26, 2012, as mentioned in our previous
Free Kids’ Admission to Albuquerque BioPark post.  Get the same free admission for kids deal on Mondays at the Albuquerque Aquarium and Botanic Garden.

Meanwhile, it’s the ABQ BioPark Zoo 85th Birthday Party on Sunday July 22 from 10 am to 2 pm.
Although they’re charging normal zoo admission, there are quite a few fun activities in the event, including:

  • Animal discovery stations for kids
  • Games and crafts including make an animal mask
  • Animal Encounters show at 11 am.
  • Cake Eating contest at 11:30 am. If you want to sign up for it, go to the Bandshell.
  • “Animal Parade” at 1 pm in the park, where you can dress up in your own animal costume or wear the mask you’ve made at the crafts station. (When I say ‘you’, I do of course mean your kids. However, if you are a 40-something who has desperately always wanted to dress up as a lion, then I reckon this is your chance to go roar!)
  • 1:15 pm:  Free birthday cake (while supplies last) and singing happy birthday.
  • Ape Keeper talk at 11:45, Wombat Keeper talk at 1:30, and Cat Keeper talk at 2:30.
  • Various feeding sessions of the seals, sea lions, and polar bears
  • Music from 100.3 The Peak

See the full schedule for the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo birthday party on July 22, 2012.

The activities are included with ABQ BioPark Zoo regular admission: $7 for adults, $3 for seniors 65+, $3 for kids aged 3-12, ages 2 and under go free.

ABQ BioPark Zoo (formerly the Rio Grande Zoo) is located at 903 10th Street SW.

If you enjoy taking your family to Albuquerque’s Biological Park attractions (the Rio Grande Zoo, Albuquerque Aquarium, and Rio Grande Botanic Garden), you can’t beat this deal.

If you join the New Mexico BioPark Society before April 30, 2009, you get two extra months of membership free! Membership already is a great bargain. With several packages available you can pick the one that’s right for you. Here’s just one example.

A Family membership for 2 adults and up to 4 children (or 3 adults and 2 children) costs $79 per year and gets you:

  • Free admission to the Albuquerque Aquarium, Rio Grande Zoo, and Rio Grande Botanic Garden as often as you’d like throughout the year
  • Half-price admission to the ZooMusic and Summer Nights concert series
  • Free or discounted admission to more than 150 U.S. zoos, aquariums, and botanic gardens
  • Free admission to ZooBoo, Father’s Day Fiesta at the Zoo, and the annual Mother’s Day Symphony Concert
  • Discounts in all BioPark gift shops
  • Discounts on BioPark education classes
  • Discounts on BioPark special events
  • Subscription to BioScape magazine
  • Invitations to the annual members-only party and exclusive members-only previews and events

That’s a lot of stuff for just $79 per year, considering a single trip to the combined BioPark attractions would normally cost a family of four around $40 at the regular admission price. Other BioPark Society memberships range in price from $49 to $299.

Like we said, if you sign up before April 30, you’ll get 2 additional months of membership free. And if you sign up before May 31, you’ll receive a one-time-use guest pass.

View the various membership tiers, and then sign up online. Use the code ASU to get the freebies!

You also can join by calling 764-6280, or in person at any BioPark attraction.

The Albuquerque BioPark attractions all are located in the vicinity of 2601 Central Ave NW, near downtown Albuquerque.
