The Albuquerque Great Backyard Bird Count on February 18-19, 2012, is a free event for bird-watchers, and it contributes to the national bird count compiled by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

If you’re into bird spotting, or you want to find out more about how to identify birds, here’s a quick  “tweet tweet” that you might like to join the Great Backyard Bird Count this weekend. It’s a free event at two Albuquerque BioPark facilities, although they’d like an RSVP to know how many people are attending. It sounds like a fun way to get outside, meet other birders, and also help the national effort to create this annual snapshot of migratory birds.

The Tingley Beach Great Backyard Bird Count on Saturday February 18 starts at 8 am, when an Audubon Society volunteer will lead birdwatchers on a hike from Tingley Beach to the Bosque, highlighting local bird species, with Discovery Stations giving info on bird-watching techniques and how to identify birds.

The ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden count is on Sunday February 19 from 8 am to noon, with check-in at the Botanic Garden gates.

Volunteers are provided with bird-spotting checklists, and all the info collected will be sent to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to compile with other data from all around the country.

According to a press release, they’d like to know who’s coming to count by Friday. So if you want to volunteer, contact the BioPark Education office at 505-848-7180 by Friday February 17.

Rio Grande Cup Regatta

Despite the posh-sounding name, the Rio Grande Cup is an event for radio-controlled model sailboats, which I think is actually more fun! And it’s free to cheer the boats on…

The 4th annual Rio Grande Cup Regatta 2011 sets sail this weekend on November 5 and 6 at Tingley Beach, captained by the Duke City Model Yacht Club. I reckon kids (of all ages) would love to go for a walk around the model boat pond to see the fleet of boats race, and I know there’s a lot of skill in racing these model boats, so I expect the competition will be fierce. Landlubbers can go and watch for free, and let’s just hope there are no pirates…

The Rio Grande Cup races start at 11 am on both November 5 and 6, finishing at 4:30 pm on Saturday, and 3 pm on Sunday. Each day there’s a lunch break at noon for the skippers to stock up on vittles.

The Duke City Model Yacht Club will also be doing practices at Tingley Beach on Friday November 4, from
2 pm, so if you’re in the ‘hood, you could drop by and watch those too.

National Free Fishing Day is on Saturday June 4, 2011, and on this day anyone may fish without a license in the state of New Mexico.

National Free Fishing Day at Tingley Beach should therefore be a bit of a party, on June 4 from 8 - 11 am.
It also gives newbies a chance to try out fishing without having to buy a license.  There will be a free fishing clinic for all, and learning stations for youngsters, presented by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and ABQ BioPark volunteers.

According to the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, there are only two dates in 2011 when it’s legal to fish in New Mexico without a license. The free fishing days are on June 4 and on September 24, 2011.

However, all other fishing rules and regs still apply.

Dad, mom, the kids, couples, singles, anyone who’s handy with a rod is welcome to join a fun day of fishing in the free fishing derby at Tingley Beach.

Albuquerque’s 5th Annual Free Fishing Derby takes place on Saturday March 12, 2011, from 7 am to 4 pm. If you missed our earlier post on this event, the fishing derby is for all ages, although you need a New Mexico fishing license to take part. The Tingley Beach Outfitters can kit you out with licenses and other fishing gear if you don’t have everything you need already. Check out the Tingley Beach Fishing Licenses and Rules here.

No point asking me anything about fishing. I love watching people fish at Tingley Beach when I go for a walk there, they always seem so calm and zen-like, but I don’t know the first thing about it myself and I’m not even quite sure what a fishing derby is – it just sounds great fun. Especially as they’ll have food and drinks for sale… well, it’s comfort in case you don’t catch as much as you’d hoped :-)

5th Annual Free Fishing Derby

  • When: Saturday March 12, 2011
  • Time: 7 am to 4 pm
  • Where: Tingley Beach
  • Price: Free, but you must have a valid fishing license.

The second annual National Get Outdoors Day encourages us to back slowly away from the remote control and brave the Realm of No Air Conditioning, otherwise known as Outside.

Once we’re there, we’ll find free outdoor fun for all the family this Saturday for National Get Outdoors Day (GO Day). The event at Tingley Beach includes:

  • Rock climbing walls
  • Camping demonstrations
  • Fishing clinic (I think this is in the morning, 10 am to noon – call the BioPark to be sure)
  • Wildlife watching
  • Short guided hikes into the bosque
  • GPS and orienteering
  • Free prize drawings for outdoor gear and America the Beautiful Passes worth $80
  • Bring your camera to take photos with Smokey Bear and (woof!) Bobber the Water Safety Dog.

You can also get more info about cheap outdoor activities and local events this summer.

National Get Outdoors Day is not actually a full day, just kind of an extended lunchtime, so we can probably all manage that.

  • When: Saturday June 12, 2010
  • Time: 10 am to 2 pm
  • Where: Tingley Beach, 1800 Tingley Dr SW

And it’s all totally free.
