Albuquerque Free Night of Theatre

Sign up for this Albuquerque Theatre Guild promo by September 30, 2012, for a chance at free theatre tickets!

The annual Free Night of Theatre campaign has been running nationally for some years in other cities, but as far as I’m aware this is the first time Albuquerque has participated. Yay!

The Albuquerque Free Night of Theatre is essentially a lottery – you sign up free at the link through September 30 and choose up to five live theatre performances you would like to see. People who register may win pairs of tickets to any, some, or all of the performances they select – or they may get none at all, I assume.

The performances are all by participating Albuquerque Theatre Guild member theatres for productions taking to the stage during October and November 2012. It’s an opportunity to try out a theatre you’ve never been to before, or for anyone who’s never even been to the theatre at all – here’s your chance to get completely free tickets.

The free ticket values vary from $12 to $35 each, and performances include:

  • 9 to 5: The Musical at Albuquerque Little Theatre
  • Murder at Lighthouse Point at East Mountain Center for Theatre – including dinner!
  • Annie at the Rodey Theatre
  • The Jewel in the Manuscript at Adobe Theater
  • Burn This at Aux Dog Theatre
  • The Haunting of Hill House at Aux Dog Theatre
  • Finger Mouth by the Tricklock Performance Laboratory
  • The History of Asking the Wrong Question at N4th Theater
  • The Waiting Room by Mother Road Theatre Company at the Filling Station
  • ….and several more.

Register for the Albuquerque Free Night of Theatre at the link. After I registered my contact info, the form didn’t immediately take me to the theatre selections. So if the same happens to you, click on the Edit Your Personal Ticket Entry tab at the sign up page – then you’ll see the options available.

Remember, it is a lottery, so there’s no guarantee, although I gather that choosing a theatre you’ve never been to before increases your chance of winning free tickets. (How do they know where we’ve been? Spooky.)  I’m also not sure how many free tickets each person gets. Hopefully a pair or more, but I’ve got a message out to the Albuquerque Theatre Guild to check and I’ll update here.

UPDATE: ABQ Theatre Guild confirms that the giveaway is for pairs of tickets, and that 12 Theatres have contributed 123 pairs of tickets to 44 performances of 15 productions. Some of the performances don’t have many people competing for them, so if you enter you have a good chance for a pair of free theatre tickets.

50% Off Two Theatre Tickets to Wooden Snowflakes

November 30, 2011 by
Filed under Arts, Half Off Deals, Theater

Comments Off on 50% Off Two Theatre Tickets to Wooden Snowflakes

Get two tickets to Wooden Snowflakes for $20 for performances by Duke City Repertory Theatre between December 8 – 18, 2011. It’s a time limited deal available through December 1.

The half price deal on two tickets is to see Wooden Snowflakes, in a production by Duke City Repertory Theatre at The Kosmos – aka The Factory on 5th Art Space on Fifth Street NW.  The play by Catherine Bush is about a world-weary and cynical woman finding the true meaning of Christmas when stranded one winter in a cabin with a mysterious stranger. Although the play sounds to be ultimately life-affirming, about finding faith and belief in love, goodness, and holiday spirit, it is not recommended for young kids – they recommend ages 13 upwards.

Usual prices are $20 per adult ticket, or $12 for students, seniors, and military. For kids aged 12 – 17, tickets are $5. So the two tickets for $20 offer obviously scores best savings if you want two adult tickets. Call it half price tickets, call it Buy One Get One Free…. either way it’s a nice little saving and might inspire a theatre visit if you wouldn’t shell out full price.

Show dates are at 8 pm on December 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, and 17, with Sunday matinees at 2 pm on December 11 and 18.  You can pick which date you want when booking the deal via this link to Living Social.

The offer closes on December 1, so if you want tickets, nab them soon!

I certainly feel like a world-weary woman at times, and the idea of being stranded in a cabin in the dead of winter sounds rather peaceful, as long as the cabin is well-stocked with breakfast burritos and Ben & Jerry’s….

ABQ Little Theatre Free Pizza: First Responders & Kirtland/Sandia

Comments Off on ABQ Little Theatre Free Pizza: First Responders & Kirtland/Sandia

Albuquerque Little Theatre offers free pizza perks for first responders and Kirtland/Sandia families.

The new production at Albuquerque Little Theatre is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, adapted from the Mark Twain classic. The play features a cast of all ages, and should be a good family show, running on weekends from September 2 – 18, 2011. Tickets are a reasonable $12 for those aged 13+, and $10 for kids aged 12 and under.

Better still, they’re running two special Friday nights with free pizza before the show for first responders, and for military and civilian employees at Kirtland Air Force Base or Sandia National Labs. So if that applies to you, make sure you buy tickets for the Tom Sawyer nights when you’ll get a snack before the play!

  • September 9: Free pizza for Kirtland Air Force Base and Sandia National Labs military and civilian employees and their families before the 7.30 pm show.
  • September 16: Free pizza for first responders and their families before the 7.30 pm show.

In both cases, book tickets at The Albuquerque Little Theatre box office (505-242-4750) and tell them you’re Kirtland/Sandia personnel, or a first responder.

For a sneak peek (or rather a sneak listen), tune into 89.9 KUNM’s Children’s Hour radio program on Saturday September 3 from 9 – 10 am, featuring the Tom Sawyer cast.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer shows are on Fridays at 7.30pm, and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm, through September 18, 2011.

Albuquerque Little Theatre is located at the south side of Old Town: 224 San Pasquale SW.

Wicked $25 Tickets in the Lottery

February 9, 2011 by

Comments Off on Wicked $25 Tickets in the Lottery

If you’re lucky in the lottery before each show, you might get $25 tickets to see Wicked at Popejoy Hall.

Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, is the award-winning blockbuster Broadway musical showing at the Popejoy Hall. Wicked tickets have a price tag to match the show’s reputation, and many shows are already sold out, but you might get lucky and score a $25 ticket to Wicked for the remainder of the Albuquerque run.

The lottery of Wicked tickets for $25 each takes place two and a half hours before each performance. Turn up at the Popejoy Hall box office and put your name in for the lottery for a limited number of orchestra seats. Half an hour later they’ll draw the winners – if you get a $25 ticket you must pay cash, and there’s a limit of two tickets per person.

Note that the $25 tickets are for limited view seating, not premium seating. The lottery is running on all shows till the end of the run on Sunday February 13, 2011. That includes the sold out shows – according to the Popejoy person I just spoke with they’ve held back the lottery orchestra seats already. See all the
Wicked at the Popejoy Hall performance times.

Regular orchestra seats cost from $52.50 to $152.50 as far as I can see, so that’s a pretty good saving if you’re willing to throw your hat in the ring. I guess the odds of getting the discount tickets depends on how many people turn up!

Wicked is best for kids aged 8 upwards, and they don’t admit children under the age of 4.

Thanks to reader Barbara J. for sending us the tip!

Comments Off on Red Umbrellas Preview Night Discounted Tickets

Tickets are discounted by up to $10 when you go on Cheap Night to this new musical production.

EDITOR NOTE: If you read this deal when first published, you may notice that the ticket prices have changed. The prices we provided were showing at the online ticket sales site when we posted the deal.  Prices at the online ticket site have now changed, and this post is updated to reflect those changes.
We’re not too wild about people changing their ticket prices when the tickets are already on sale, but in this case the change works in the buyer’s favor, as preview night tickets are now $1 cheaper for adults than they were this time yesterday! Hey, if we wait a bit, they might get cheaper tomorrow 😉

Red Umbrellas the Musical debuts in Albuquerque in September 2010. They reckon it might be controversial, owing to the subject matter: Red Umbrellas tells the story of eight prostitutes “in poetry, song, laughter, and some heated debate” (according to the show description).
Read more about Red Umbrellas the Musical. The production is written and directed by Margaret E. Iha and presented at the South Broadway Cultural Center.

Regular tickets for the September 10, 11, and 12 shows cost $22 – $27 for adults (the $27 tickets are front row), and $18 for students and seniors 65+.

BUT tickets are discounted to $17 for adults if you go on preview night September 9, and students and seniors also get a price break at $14.

That’s a saving of $5- $10 for adults on cheap night, and $4 for students/seniors – a smart choice for musical fans!

Buy discounted tickets for the Thursday September 9 performance of Red Umbrellas online.  If you want to go to a different performance and pay full price, follow the same link and make your choice.

Red Umbrellas Preview Night:

  • When:  Thursday September 9, 2010
  • Time:  7 pm
  • Where:  John Lewis Theater at the South Broadway Cultural Center
  • Ticket Price: $17 adults;  $14 for seniors 65+ and students

South Broadway Cultural Center is located at 1025 Broadway SE.

$10 Tickets to NHCC Play for ABQ on the Cheap Readers

July 7, 2010 by
Filed under Art & Entertainment, Live Performances, Theater

Comments Off on $10 Tickets to NHCC Play for ABQ on the Cheap Readers

Get $2 off tickets to performances of Miss Margarida’s Way at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in July 2010, in a special offer for Albuquerque on the Cheap readers!

Miss Margarida’s Way has become an international classic play, produced in more than 30 countries. Written by Brazilian playwright Roberto Athayde, it’s described as funny and absurdist, with political undertones (apparently it was closed down by the authorities after its 1973 premier in Brazil.) It also involves audience interaction – Miss Margarida is a schoolteacher and the audience is her “class”!

Miss Margarida’s Way opens on July 15, 2010, with a run to July 25. This is the first time it’s been performed in Albuquerque, in partnership between Albuquerque’s Camino Real Productions and the National Hispanic Cultural Center. (Then they go on tour to Mexico!)

Regular tickets are $12, but in a special offer for ABQ on the Cheap readers you can get $2 off, bringing each ticket priced down to $10

(This is the same discount price paid by seniors, students, and members of the NHCC & Albuquerque Theatre Guild.)

How to get your discount tickets: Mention Albuquerque on the Cheap at the Box Office (505-724-4771).
You can only get the $10 tickets when you buy direct from the NHCC box office, not via 3rd party ticket agents.

  • When: Miss Margarida’s Way plays on Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun from July 15 to July 25, 2010
  • Where: Wells Fargo Auditorium at the National Hispanic Cultural Center
  • Note: Play includes some adult content and language.

The National Hispanic Cultural Center is located at 1701 4th Street SW, Albuquerque.

An exclusive for ABQ on the Cheap readers to get 33% off tickets to Patrick Marber’s play Closer in May, including the opening night reception!

Patrick Marber’s Closer opens at The Filling Station Theatre this Friday, directed by Christy Lopez.
Closer is a tense and emotionally gripping play, exploring truth, relationships, and the illusion of love and romance. It’s been described as a modern reworking of Noel Coward’s Private Lives –  you may remember the film adaptation starring Julia Roberts, Clive Owen, Jude Law, and Natalie Portman.

Regular tickets for Closer cost $15, but RyBan Productions is offering Albuquerque on the Cheap readers an exclusive third-off discount – get tickets for all shows for just $10.

The offer includes the opening night of Friday May 7, when you can also join in the opening night reception after the performance with free food and drinks!

  • How to get your discounted $10 tickets: Mention this Albuquerque on the Cheap offer when buying tickets
  • Ticket Reservations:  Call (505) 507 0598 or email rybanproductions@gmail.com or buy tickets at the door at The Filling Station Theatre.
  • When: May 7 to May 23, 2010, on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm.
  • Where: The Filling Station Theatre, 1024 4th Street SW

***Note that the prices shown on The Filling Station website at time of writing need updating – ignore those, I’m giving you the correct prices.

Students, Seniors, and Albuquerque Theatre Guild members also get $10 tickets.  RyBan Productions also has a couple of quirky discounts:  $1 off if you bring a red or green apple, or $5 off if you write your own obituary and bring that – but those only apply if you’re paying the full $15 ticket price… and why would you do that if you can get tickets with ABQ on the Cheap for $10?

But it’s a fun idea if you’re feeling creative about paying tribute to yourself 😉 and you can take an apple anyway – they’re used in the show! Sounds like a great time for all, and it’s wise to reserve in advance for this one, especially for opening night!

$5 Student Rush Tickets: Catgut Strung Violin

May 5, 2009 by

Comments Off on $5 Student Rush Tickets: Catgut Strung Violin

Tricklock Company presents "Catgut Strung Violin"

In case you have no idea what that headline means, let us explain.

First, the deal: students get $5 rush rate tickets 5 minutes before curtain at each performance (except the opening night gala).

Second, the work: Catgut Strung Violin is Tricklock Company‘s newest production, and it’s a doozie. An original work created by Tricklock members Kevin Elder and Alex Knight, along with guest artist Charles Gamble, Catgut Strung Violin is the hilarious story of an unlikely hero’s journey through the foxholes, full of physicality reminiscent of the great comedians of silent film. The play is a surreal work that explores the horrors and absurdities of war through our hero, Anton, and his cherished violin.

For those who either aren’t students or don’t want to take a chance on whether or not tickets will be available at curtain, shows cost $18 general admission, $12 students and seniors, and can be reserved by calling 254-7716.

The performance runs May 7 through June 7. Thursdays through Saturdays at 8:00pm and Sundays at 2:00pm, at the Auxiliary Dog Art Theatre, 3011 Monte Vista Blvd NE (near UNM), Albuquerque.

Enjoy!
