We mentioned this freebie last month, but time is running out, so here’s a reminder of how to get a free springboard diving lesson on Tuesdays through June 1, 2012….

Abel Sanchez, head UNM Diving Coach & New Mexico Diving coach, wants as many youngsters as possible to have a chance to try the sport of diving.  So he’s offering a free springboard diving lesson on Tuesdays to young people aged 18 and under. Each person can only have one free lesson, and they must know how to swim already :-)

The one-hour practice times are every Tuesday at 5:30 pm now through June 1, 2012 at the UNM Johnson Center. So there are plenty of Tuesdays to choose from, but it’s still only one lesson per person during that period.  It’s a no-strings, one-time free lesson offer, with no memberships or other commitments required.

Contact Abel at(505)-249-4652 or email Abel Sanchez for exact location details.

Abel Sanchez  is a 2000 summer Olympian, 3-time South American silver medalist, and 2-time United States silver medalist. You can see more about coach Sanchez and the New Mexico Diving Academy at the link.

Teens aged 15-17 can join a free after school arts program, and families create art together on Saturdays.

I think this is super-cool, and if you’ve got an arty teenager in the family, maybe they will too!

The Albuquerque Museum of Art and History free after school arts program for teens aged 15-17 starts in October 2011, and runs every Tuesday afternoon from 3 – 5:30 pm through April 2012.

The program is called Lead with the Arts, and includes studio projects, meeting local artists, visits to art venues, and, of course, meeting other teens who also want to explore art.  Lead with the Arts is free, but the teen has to complete an application and return it by September 30, 2011.  Here’s the online Albuquerque Museum Lead with the Arts application – it’s for those aged 15 to 17 by October 2011.

For everyone else, the Albuquerque Museum family art workshops on Saturdays from 1 – 2.30 pm are open to all museum visitors and included in museum admission.  Supplies are provided, and budding artists of any age can show up to create art inspired by the Museum’s exhibits.

The Albuquerque Museum of Art and History is located at the corner of Mountain Road and 19th Street, in Albuquerque Old Town.

Shop Til You Rock comes to Coronado Center on Saturday, August 13, 2011 with free music concerts, games and prizes for teens, and (if you spend enough money) a free Shop Etc. gift card.

Shop Til You Rock is a series of events across the country aimed at teens. It’s coming to Albuquerque this Saturday August 13, from 1 pm – 6 pm in the Sears Court at the Coronado Center.  Although they’re vague on the details, we gather that it includes prizes, games, special deals, and possibly fashion events, as well as free music concerts at 1 pm and 5 pm by I Am Cassettes and Dustin Cavazos, with the opportunity to meet the performers after they’ve done their thang.

For anyone (teens, or someone like me who knows she was a teenager once but has long forgotten where I put  it) they’re giving away a free $20 Shop Etc. gift card when you spend $150 at the Coronado Center mall during the Shop Til You Rock event. Plus there’s a bonus gift of a year’s free subscription to Family Circle or Parents magazine. Both the gift card and the magazine subcriptions are while supplies last, so shop earlier rather than later, methinks.

To claim your free gift card, you need to take shopping receipts to the sum of $150 or more, dated August 13 from any Coronado Center store, to the Shop Til You Rock event between 1 pm and 6 pm.

The Coronado Center free gift card offer excludes receipts for bill payments (well, YES!) and is limited to one free card per person.

The Shop Etc. Gift Card can be used at most retailers and restaurants that accept American Express cards.

Free ice hockey instruction for kids and youth who want to try out the sport this weekend.

New Mexico Ice Breakers Hockey Association is holding a free Hooked on Hockey program this weekend, on August 21 and 22, for new and beginning players age 5 and over.

Each afternoon’s program runs from 2:30 to 4:30 pm at the Outpost Ice Arena, and first-time players can try on the equipment, get on the ice with coaches, and enjoy some free training while trying the sport out to see if they like it. They’re calling it a ‘structured crash course’. I wonder if that’s a deliberate choice of words? My ice-legs are so skiddy I’d definitely be crashing.

Hooked on Hockey is totally free for kids! They’ll even provide all the equipment as long as supplies last. You do need to call and register for the free hockey event in advance though, as spaces are limited.

  • When: Saturday August 21 and Sunday August 22, 2010
  • Time: 2:30 – 4:30 pm, actual time on the ice is 3:15 to 4:15 pm
  • Where: Outpost Ice Arena
  • Price: Free for kids aged 5 and over, register in advance.

Hooked on Hockey is run by NM Ice Breakers Hockey Association, a non-profit youth recreation program.

Outpost Ice Arena is located at 9530 Tramway Boulevard, NE.

If the economy has you re-thinking that Spring Break trip to Florida, here’s a cheap alternative.

Albuquerque’s Kiss 97.3 is hosting Spring Break Teen Bash 2009 at the Sunshine Theater on Sunday, March 22. Hosted by Dana Cortez, with DJ Automatic in the mix. This inexpensive entertainment for teens features dance contests and more. Show your student ID for unspecified discounts.

It can be hard to find fun things for teens to do in Albuquerque, but this dance could be just the ticket. This event is for high school and junior age teens only. Tickets $10 at the door (no advance sales). Doors open and event begins at 6:00pm.

The Sunshine Theater is located at 120 Central Ave SW.
