Animal Humane New MexicoThere’s no delicate way to say this, but… is your pooch peeing on the carpet suddenly? Is your cat going crazy on the furniture or your dog barking so much it drives you and your neighbors nuts?  Or does your pet keep breaking out through the fence and you’re worried for his or her safety?

These are often solvable problems if you know what to do. But if you don’t know what to do and you’d like to understand your pet better, you can get free help from Animal Humane New Mexico.

Use their free helpline (505-938-7900) to speak to a trained coach who can help you solve pet behavior problems.  If you don’t reach someone immediately, leave a message and someone will get back to you soon.  You can also email your questions to them at  behaviorhelpline@animalhumanenm.org   This is a completely free service and it’s wonderful that they offer it. It might even prevent some pets from having to go to shelters when their human is driven to the end of their tether – so pass the word along!

The Animal Humane Behavior free helpline helps with pet issues including separation anxiety, destructive behaviors, escaping, barking, chasing, digging, fearful behavior, housetraining,  introducing a new pet to the household where there are already pets, and puppy and kitten development.

I only wish they could provide free trained coaches to deal with Mr Cheap’s behavior problems, but he’d probably say the same about me :-)

Dog Adoption Fees Waived

Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department waives its usual fees during a dog adoption drive from September 7 to 9, 2012.

I’m never quite comfortable talking about pets as if they are a ‘special offer’.  But the fact is that if you’re looking for a new dog, the City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department Free Fido weekend might be of interest to you. And if it helps a dog find a new home, that’s good enough for me.

So here’s the deal. During the Free Fido weekend from Friday September 7 to Sunday September 9, if you adopt an adult dog aged at least one year old from the Eastside or Westside Animal Shelters, you can take the pooch home free of the usual dog adoption fee.

That saves $40- $50 on the regular adult dog adoption fee (depending on the animal’s age). Note that Seniors aged 50+ and veterans and active military personnel always receive a $10 discount on pet adoptions, with suitable ID.

Visitors can talk with a pet adoption expert while they meet the dogs, to receive guidance on the kind of dog best suited to their family and lifestyle.

All other adoption policies remain as usual, it’s just the adoption fee that is waived during the event, and the free dog adoption is only for dogs aged one year or more.

The Free Fido adoption drive is on Friday September 7 from 10:30 am to 8 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday September 8 and 9 from 10:30 am to 6 pm.

The offer is at both the Eastside and Westside Animal Shelters, located at:

Eastside Animal Shelter, 8920 Lomas Boulevard NE.
Westside Animal Shelter, 11800 Sunset Gardens Road SW.

Comments Off on 50% Off Dog and Cat Exams

No, they aren’t making dogs and cats sit for the GRE (yet), but if you have a pooch or a puss, you can get them a full health exam at 50% off. If you missed our previous post on this, you’ve still got to the end of December to take advantage of the discount.

ABQ PetCare is offering the half price health exam for dogs and cats to new patients on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  The full exam gives pets what sounds like a pretty thorough going-over to me, including a comprehensive health check, a heart worm test, nail trim, a parasite check, a dose of Frontline (protects against fleas and ticks) and a dose of Hart Gard.

The exam usually costs $175, which makes it $ 87.50 during the ABQ PetCare discount promotion on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  I don’t see the offer info at their website (it was there, maybe it still is somewhere) but in an email to us ABQ PetCare stated the offer runs through to the end of 2011.  Make an appointment at (505) 299-VETS

ABQ PetCare is located at 9032 Montgomery Boulevard NE.

50% Off Pit Bull Adoption & Free Pit Bull Seminar

Comments Off on 50% Off Pit Bull Adoption & Free Pit Bull Seminar

Gotta love the joke about “meet Brad Pit” by the Eastside Animal Shelter for their Pit Bull Adoption and Seminar event on Saturday. I fell for it for one tiny nanosecond (sound of lower jaw hitting floor), until I realized Brad Pitt spells his name with two t’s. And in any case Brad Pitt is likely to be busy elsewhere… although as Pitt’s just announced that he’s quitting acting, who knows? But kudos to whoever at the Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department thought that up and gave me a smile.

So here’s the deal: On Saturday November 19, 2011, the Pit Bull Adoption Event provides a chance to meet the canine Brad Pit, and get 50% off adoption fees.  At 1 pm, a free Pit Bull 101 seminar will provide an introduction to pit bulls for owners, lasting about one hour.

The Pit Bull Adoption Event runs from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm on November 19 at the Eastside Animal Shelter, 8920 Lomas Boulevard NE.

Thanks to all the people who work at shelters or to help animals in any way. And if you already have a pet, don’t forget the 50% Off Dog and Cat Exams deal at ABQ PetCare that we posted about recently.

Comments Off on 50% Off Cat Adoption

I’m never quite comfortable talking about pets as if they are a ‘special offer’.  But the fact is that if you’re looking for a new cat, the City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department special offer for October might be of interest to you. And if it helps a cat find a new home, that’s good enough for me!

As the City’s cattery is nearly full to capacity, they’re offering 50% off cat adoptions through October 31, 2011.  Cat adoptions include spaying or neutering, a microchip, and all legally-required vaccinations.

The regular Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department shelters’ adoption fee is $20 for cats aged 3 years or more, $30 for cats aged between 6 months and 3 years, and $40 for kittens under 6 months.  (Seniors aged 50+ and veterans always receive a $10 discount on pet adoptions, with suitable ID.)

Thanks to all the people who work at shelters or to help animals in any way, and if you take advantage of the half price cat adoptions through October, you can always spend what you save on new toys for your cat…

The Purina Pet Products giveaway runs through September 24, 2011, but you have to be quick on the button.

Purina is giving away coupons for free pet products until September 24, and each day they’re offering a free product coupon for dogs and a free product coupon for cats. These include free cat and dog food, chews, and cat litter.

But you have to be quick to claim your freebie! The coupons are available each day at 9 am Mountain Time (11 am Eastern Time). Once the quantity for that day has been snatched up, the only thing to do is wait for the next day’s offer.

You can see the full list of free pet products on offer each day, to make sure you’re ready on the button for the ones you want.

There are 1,000 coupons every day for each of the cat and the dog products, with the exception of September 24, when there will only be 500 coupons for the cat products. (Poor cats, why discriminate against them? Oh, now I see why. The September 24 coupon is for a free Breeze brand from Purina Tidy Cats Litter System, worth $50.)

The Purina pet product giveaway is limited to one dog and one cat coupon per person, per email address, per household, per day. Lots of pers there. Or perhaps we should say: Lots of purrs?

2 Million Dogs Puppy Up New Mexico Walk

Comments Off on 2 Million Dogs Puppy Up New Mexico Walk

The 2 Million Dogs Puppy Up! New Mexico Walk puts its best paws forward on Sunday, September 25, 2011. The two mile walk at Rotary Park in Bernalillo aims to increase awareness of canine cancer and raise funds for research.

If you’re interested in joining in with your dog to Puppy Up! against cancer, registration on the day is $25. But preregister for the 2 Million Dogs Puppy Up New Mexico Walk online by September 22, and get a $5 price break on registration at $20. Note that registration for kids aged 14 and under is free.

The event will include demonstrations, live music, games, speakers, a memory wall and vendor booths, plus goodie bags for the first 100 walkers to check in on the day.  There are also prizes for fundraisers. Raise $20 or more and you’ll receive a dog bandana and 2 Million Dogs bracelet, or raise $100 and you and your pooch will go fetch a dog bandana, a 2 Million Dogs bracelet, and an event T-shirt.

Apparently there are many similiarities between canine cancer and human cancer, so the study of cancer in dogs may also benefit people. They call it “comparative oncology” studies. I didn’t know that. You learn something new every day.

The 2 Million Dogs Puppy Up! New Mexico Walk takes place on September 25 at Rotary Park in Bernalillo, with check-in from noon. The walk starts at 1 pm and the whole doggy deal ends at 4 pm.
