If you’re a garlic lover, this is the event you’ve been waiting for! And, it’s all free.

The 2nd Annual South Valley Garlic Festival takes place Saturday, July 18 (2009), from 4:00pm until dark, at Chispas Farm. This “extremely informal event” features a potluck (bring your favorite garlic dish to share), garlic tasting, garlic digging, and a garlic braid demo. You might even win a prize for “tastiest dish,” “garlickiest dish,” or “best costume.” (Come dressed as a garlic braid?)

A certified organic producer that sells at Nob Hill Growers’ Market, Chispas Farm is located at 229 Saavedra Rd SW, Albuquerque. More info: 247-4088.

La Montanita Co-op is hosting its 10th annual Valley Garden Party on Saturday, April 4, 2009, from 10:00am to 3:00pm.  This is the premier gardening kick-off event for those interested in growing organic and native plants. The garden party features vendors offering organic seeds, seedlings, and native plants, plus information on how to garden and landscape successfully in our high desert climate. You can learn about composting, pruning, mulching, water conservation, and much more.

But, after all, this is a party, so the event is much more than vendors hawking wares. You’ll be able to enjoy lunch specials provided by the Co-op Deli while the kids play in a jolly jumper or take part in other children’s activities. Friends of Mountain Mahogany Community School will be offering face painting and other things as a fundraiser.

And, of course, there will be music. At 10:00am, singer Susan Clark will perform. At 10:45, the whole family can enjoy the Loren Kahn Puppet Theater. Then at 11:00am, Saudade will perform Latin music, while at noon the Watermelon Jug Band will entertain. Finally, at 1:30pm the Daddyo’s will perform fab oldies hits.

Perhaps best of all, the Co-op is giving away 100 free trees while supplies last! Receive your choice of either the Thornless Honeylocust or the Ponderosa Pine. Either one will make a fine, environmentally friendly addition to your landscape.

Please note: in case of bad weather, the alternate date for this event is Sunday, April 5.

The 10th Annual La Montanita Co-op Valley Garden Party will be held at 2400 Rio Grande Blvd NW, Albuquerque.
