Happy birthday to the National Park Service, and happy free admission to us all…

The National Park Service celebrates its 98th anniversary on August 25, 2014 and we can all share the celebration. On that birthday date, admission is free to National Parks that usually charge an entry fee.

On the fee-free day, Monday August 25, you can enter every one of the country’s 400+ national parks for free – and we’ve got plenty to choose from in New Mexico!

It’s a great opportunity to explore without paying a cent. It’s also a good excuse to plan a day trip to visit a park you don’t know yet, or return to an old favorite, with options from the Grand Canyon to Yosemite.

The New Mexico National Parks with free admission on August 25 include:

Wherever you’re going, check the links above for current conditions at the park in case they have any special weather or other park alerts or info you need to know. Some parks may also have free events. For example,White Sands National Monument offers daily patio talks with a park ranger. White Sands also hosts a daily sunset stroll – a one-hour walk through the sand dunes, guided by a ranger.

Albuquerque’s own Petroglyph National Monument is always free to enter (with a nominal parking fee at Boca Negra Canyon). Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument is always free too.

To celebrate National Junior Ranger Day and National Park Week, Petroglyph National Monument hosts a day of free activities for kids on April 20, 2013, including see a wolf!

Pack a picnic lunch and take the family to join in the free events at Petroglyph National Monument Visitor Center this Saturday April 20 from 10 am to 3 pm.  Here’s the Junior Ranger Day schedule:

  • 10 am:  See a live wolf with Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary
  • 11 am: Safe solar viewing – I guess that’s the solar telescopes!
  • 1 pm:  See a raptor presentation
  • 2 pm: String a shell necklace

Usually, all the participating children have received Junior Ranger awards too.  I’ve no idea if that will be happening this year (there’s no mention of it) but we can hope so!

No reservations are needed, and there’s no fee to enter Petroglyph National Monument or to join in the activities. Call them at (505) 899-0205 x333 for any other info.

Prehistoric Pueblo Tools & Turkey Feather Blankets at Petroglyph

Two free events at Petroglyph National Monument Visitor Center this weekend, July 7 and 8, 2012.

If you’re looking for something a bit different to do this weekend, head over to the Petroglyph National Monument Visitor Center. They hold free talks and demonstrations most weekends but I haven’t mentioned them for quite a while, so thanks to reader Kenny for telling me about the Pueblo Tools talk and reminding me to spread the word! He says it looks fun and I agree.

Prehistoric Tools of the Ancestral Pueblo free talk is on Saturday July 7 at 7 pm, and the hour-long presentation is led by archaeologist Ron Fields, who’ll show how projectiles have changed over the 12,000 years that we humans have lived in the Rio Grande Valley. Well, not WE humans exactly. I feel very old some days but I haven’t been here that long. He’ll talk about how prehistoric people survived around the area that is now the monument. (And they didn’t even have microwaves or pizza deliveries.)

There’s also a Turkey Feather Blanket Weaving Demonstration on both Saturday July 7 and Sunday July 8 from 10 am to 4 pm, with Darris Lovato of Santo Domingo Pueblo weaving turkey feather and rabbit fur blankets, and making shell inlay jewelry with silver and turquoise.

Petroglyph National Monument is free to enter, and its located on the Westside of Albuquerque on Western Trail just off Unser Boulevard NW.

Here are directions and a map to the Petroglyph National Monument Visitor Center.
