If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to ABQ on the Cheap's RSS feed or email digests. Thanks for visiting!

Albuquerque BioPark offers a discount to active and non-active military personnel visiting the BioPark Zoo, Aquarium, and Botanic Garden. Nice one! That’s a very good move to thank our service men and women.

The new ABQ BioPark tickets military discount was rolled out earlier this year, and if you missed our previous post on it, it gives $2 off adult admission and $1 off children’s admission. The discount is valid for active and non-active personnel, although you do of course need to show your military ID, and the discount is for general admission, not for any special events.

Albuquerque BioPark regular admission is $7 for adults, $3 for seniors 65+, $3 for kids aged 3-12, and ages 2 and under go free. That’s for entry into either the Zoo, or the Aquarium and Botanic Garden.

A combo ticket for all BioPark locations is only available on Tuesday to Sunday mornings from 9 am to noon, at $12 for adults, $5 for kids, including train rides.

Free and Low Cost Acupuncture

February 1, 2012 by

Here’s a sharp deal (ouch!) on acupuncture – with free treatments for new patients, and a host of other acupuncture specials, including discounts for military patients and families

Let’s get to the point: I’ve had acupuncture treatments, and for all my bad puns it doesn’t hurt at all. And I’m so squeamish I watch entire episodes of Grey’s Anatomy with my eyes closed (except for when McDreamy comes on). I’ve also found acupuncture effective for various conditions, although it has not yet cured my insatiable craving to save CASH!

So it’s good to know about these Casita Community Acupuncture deals:

  • Free acupuncture in February 2012 for new patients on Fridays from 2-6 pm.
  • Their regular low cost acupuncture treatments are charged on a sliding scale of $20 – 40 per session, depending how much patients decide they can afford. Expect to pay a $10 paperwork fee on your first visit.
  • Get 7 treatments for the price of 6 to save even more with the Frequent Patient Card.
  • A $60 pass is good for 7 visits within a 7 day period, and they say it might be suited for intensive work on issues such as severe pain, weight loss, or smoking cessation.
  • Get a free treatment when you refer 3 new patients.
  • All active duty military personnel, veterans, and their immediate families are treated at the military discount rate of $15. Take military ID with you.

Casita Community Acupuncture offers treatments in a community setting – meaning you’re in an open space near other patients rather than in a private room. CCA says this is the traditional Asian style of acupuncture treatment, and is the reason for the affordable acupuncture sessions, which usually last one hour (or 75 minutes for a first visit).

Casita Community Acupuncture is located at 2117 San Mateo NE.

Note: As with all service providers in the wellbeing area, we don’t endorse any particular business, we just report the deals. It’s up to the customer to check out services for suitability.

U.S. Military personnel serving either at home or overseas can request a free care package,

The free Scion military care package contents vary, but items mentioned include CDs, beanies, a deck of cards and a pre-paid card for an hour of internet access. The request form also asks for your shirt size… so that could be a clue!

To send a request, you must be on active duty or in the reserves in the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or National Guard. Register online for the Scion free military care package - selecting either the form for military stationed in the U.S., or the form for military stationed overseas.

Care packages are limited to one per person per twelve month period. There’s no expiry date given to send a request, but care package quantities are limited, so apply sooner rather than later.

Scion is part of Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc.

Sipapu Ski Resort offers a bunch of freebies and deals to lure skiers and snowboarders on to the slopes at the family-friendly resort during the 2011-2012 season. Update: links have been removed as these offers are now finished. See the latest ski deals and freebies at Sipapu for January to April 2013.

For one, you can score FREE lodging as Sipapu brings back one of its most popular promotions. Buy a $44 lift ticket and get one night’s free lodging. You and up to three ski buddies can get a free room with two queen beds at Sipapu’s motel, located mere yards from the base of the lifts.  The other three people can be non-skiers too, as the free room only requires the purchase of one lift ticket. The offer is good on specific dates through the season, so see the Sipapu free motel dates for details.

Sipapu skiers can also get free lodging in Taos at the Sagebrush Inn, El Pueblo Lodge, Quality Inn, or Indian Hills Inn, or free lodging in Las Vegas, NM at the Super 8.  Both of these offers require  a minimum purchase of two $44 adult lift tickets.  They run throughout the season with some date restrictions, check the deal links for valid dates and details.

Car Load Days Deal Everyone in one car skis for $50 on January 4, 11, 18, and 25, plus later dates in February through April. You can pack up to 6 skiers in one vehicle and get this deal – that’s under 10 bucks per person. But you must mention the Car Load Days Deal when collecting your lift tickets.

Two for One Tuesdays  From January 3, 2012, buy a full price lift ticket and get one lift ticket free on Tuesdays.  As far as I can see, this offer runs every Tuesday from January 3 to February 28, and then for one day on March 20, but check the dates at the link in case they change!

On Parents Ski Free Week from January 7-13, 2012, a parent gets a free lift ticket with the purchase of a teen or child full price lift ticket.

A host of other Sipapu ski deals through the season make me wonder if anyone will pay full price!

  • Kids ski free aged 6 and under every day with proof of age
  • Fourth Graders ski free every day with proof such as a current report card
  • Active Military ski free every day with military ID. There are some blackout dates – see the link
  • 40 Year Olds ski free every day – gotta love that one. If you’re forty, you ski or ride free with proof of age
  • 60 Year Olds ski free every day this season, to celebrate Sipapu’s 60th anniversary. You must be exactly 60, with proof of age.
  • Free lift ticket for skiers aged 70+ every day with proof of age
  • Free ski or snowboard lesson for first timers aged 7+ with the purchase of a full price lift ticket.

You need to mention the relevant offer when you turn up, ‘cos, like, they’re not mind-readers.

You’ll want to know what the skiing is like before making plans, so check out the Sipapu snow report.

Sipapu is about a 2.5 hour drive from Albuquerque via Santa Fe, 20 miles southeast of Taos. Get directions to Sipapu Ski Resort.

Free Photo Portrait for Families of Deployed Military

November 15, 2011 by

The Portraits of Love program is free to families of deployed military for the 2011 holiday season, and for those who missed our previous post, it’s nearly the last chance to make an appointment!

If someone in your family is currently serving in the military overseas, you can get a free professional family portrait in a 5″ x 7″ size sent to your family’s service member this holiday season, plus a free copy for yourself.

The PDMA Portraits of Love program has a deadline of November 30, 2011, for the photos to be taken.  I’d go sooner rather than later, as they seem to have a cap of 10,000 photos nationally.

Find participating Portraits of Love photo studios to book your session. At time of writing the only Albuquerque photographer taking part is CatchLight Photography, so cheers to CatchLight Photography for snapping to it and volunteering for the program!

I’d check when booking if you need to take Military ID to the portrait sitting. Families who take up the free portrait offer also get a promo code for an optional Buy One Get One Free Photo Blanket offer featuring your choice of photos. The regular price for one 50″ x 60″ blanket is $89.99, so you get two for that price. (But if you take advantage of that BOGO offer, they deliver both blankets to one address – you have to ship the gift blanket to the recipient yourself.)

The Portraits of Love program is a partnership between  the PhotoImaging Manufacturers and Distributors Association, USO, and Soldiers’ Angels.
