If you haven’t made it yet to the 2013 summer program of Casa San Ysidro free admission days on the second Sunday of the month, your last chance is coming up!

Casa San Ysidro: The Gutiérrez-Minge House in Corrales is part of the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History. Tours (usually only offered on specified dates/times) generally cost $4 for adults.

But on the Casa San Ysidro free day on Sunday August 11, everyone gets free admission from 1 – 4 pm. That means you can tour the house and gardens, and enjoy a family-friendly presentation to learn about frontier life.

This Sunday August 11, 2013, from 1 – 4 pm, the Casa San Ysidro free program features demonstrations by a blacksmith and a hide-tanner. At 2:30 pm you can see a piece of living history as Edward Wallace gussies up in period costume and presents a Chautauqua-style portrayal of mountain man Jim Beckworth.

Beckworth was a real historical character who overcame slavery and established a life as a frontier hunter, trapper, guide, and hotel operator. (Hotel operator? I guess we’re resourceful here in New Mexico and always have been!) Edward Wallace will tell us all about it in his performance of “From Slave to Super Star.”

Comments Off on Albuquerque Chicken Coop and Rabbit Tour: July 13-14

The new Bernalillo County Coop and Rabbitry Tour pecks (and hops) into action this weekend to tour Albuquerque chicken coops, and it’s free for all the family.

This tour used to be the Albuquerque Coop and Garden Tour, which since 2008 offered inspiration to grow your own backyard edibles and keep chickens. For 2013, Bernalillo County 4-H Small Animal Projects has taken the tour weekend under its wing (ha!) and renamed it the Bernalillo County Coop and Rabbitry Tour. Yes, they’ve added rabbits to the tour!

The Bernalillo County Coop and Rabbitry Tour takes place on Saturday and Sunday July 13 – 14, from 10 am to 2 pm. Even if you aren’t ready to take the plunge into poultry-rearing or rabbit-raising just yet, the free tour of Albuquerque chicken coops looks like a fun way to get outside this weekend. I reckon kids will love it!

Check out the maps to see where all the Albuquerque chicken coops and rabbitry venues are open to the public on each day. There are 6 locations to visit on Saturday July 13 shown in this Saturday map. There are 13 locations to tour on Sunday July 14 and they are on the Sunday map.

The tours are free and open to all, and sites are only open for public visits between 10 am and 2 pm on each day.

Comments Off on Corrales Heritage Day 2013

Looking for some weekend fun?  Good, because Casa San Ysidro and Old San Ysidro Church in Corrales celebrate Corrales Heritage Day 2013 on May 18  from 10  am to 4 pm.

Casa San Ysidro is part of the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, and tours (usually only offered on specified dates/times) generally cost $4 for adults.

But on Corrales Heritage Day Saturday May 18 you can visit Casa San Ysidro for free, and check out the period rooms in this historic house. You can also see demonstrations of blacksmithing in the forge, spinning, weaving, bread baking in the horno, and other traditional occupations. They’ve had sheep shearing in the past too and the event often includes critters to pet, perhaps a llama or a burro, plus children’s activities. I’ve very much enjoyed watching the blacksmithing here. It was fascinating and I walked away with a nail the smithie had just made. (He gave it to me. I didn’t just steal it!) Visitors may also browse the retablos, jewelry, and other arts and crafts at the traditional Arts Mercado.

Live entertainment includes:

  • Puppet show by Loren Kahn Puppet Theatre at 11 and 1 pm, presenting Floppo, the Spanish Frog Prince.
  • Frank McCulloch y Sus Amigos play New Mexican music at 3 p.m.
  • Watch a burro packing demonstration at 12 noon and 2 pm, when Ron and Pat Rundstrom with their faithful burros show how the early pioneers packed their burros for adventure!

At the Old San Ysidro Church you can watch a video of Heart of the Village: a History of the Old San Ysidro Church and see other historic photos and exhibits of the Corrales Historical Society. They also have kids’ activities like making tin ornaments.

Did we mention that it’s all FREE admission to this historical extravaganza?

Tamarind Institute Free Tours

Comments Off on Tamarind Institute Free Tours

Tamarind Institute has an international reputation as a center for fine art lithography and for its contributions to printmaking. The snazzy Central Avenue building (it moved there in summer 2010) is a lovely chilled-out space and I feel super-coooool when I visit.  Mr Cheap still loves his Tamarind Institute 50th Anniversary T-Shirt with a design by Ed Ruscha, and people comment on it whenever he wears it.  (Appreciative comments. Which make a nice change from the remarks he gets on some of his outfits.)

To get an insider view of the world-renowned art center, you can take a free Tamarind Institute tour on the first Friday of most months, and the Tamarind Institute folk tell us that they should have one every month now through the end of 2012.  Reservations are required in advance, as spaces are limited.

The free Tamarind Institute Tours at 1:30 pm last about 90 minutes, and include a printing demonstration, history of the Tamarind, and a video.

The next Tamarind Institute First Friday tour dates at 1:30 pm will be:

July 6, 2012
August 3, 2012
September 7, 2012
October 5, 2012

Tours are free, but spaces are limited, so contact Tamarind Institute by phone or email to reserve a place.

Tamarind Institute is located at 2500 Central Avenue SE, at the corner of Central and Stanford

The Open Space Visitor Center hosts a free Bosque Wild nature walk on the first Sunday morning of each month, kicking off at 9 am.

Biologist, naturalist and birder Elsa Bumstead leads the way, exploring the natural flora and fauna along the river, and filling you in on the history of Bosque. The 90 minute walk is described as ‘easy’ and afterwards there’s coffee and a snack provided by Sunflower Farmers Market.

The walk is limited to 20 people, and the minimum age to join the walk is 7 years.

You DO need to register for these popular free walks, and they recommend booking in advance, ideally a month before the walk. This is why we’re alerting you now…

    • When: First Sunday of the Month – July 1,  August 5, and September 2, 2012
    • Time:  9 am
    • Where: Open Space Visitor Center, 6500 Coors Boulevard NW – but register with Open Space Visitor Center or call (505) 897-8831 for the free Bosque Wild nature walk to get directions to the trail head.

Take binoculars to spot the birds and wildlife, water, sun protection, and suitable gear for the weather. And of course Sensible Walking Shoes. (What are THEY? Not my leopard suede stiletto heels then?)
