Comments Off on Affordable Care Act: Free Albuquerque Info Sessions

If you’re one of the people seeking information on the new Affordable Care Act, your choices and how the new health care act will affect you, free help is at hand!

Yes, we’ve all heard the news stories about the Affordable Care Act – or Obama Care as it’s known. For those individuals affected by the health care laws and feeling confused about their options, Albuquerque and Bernalillo County Library offers a series of free information sessions.

The ABC Library Affordable Care Act information sessions are given in partnership with New Mexico Health Connections. (Scroll down the page at the link to see them all.) Admission is free but seating is limited, so these sessions are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Upcoming one-hour sessions on the Affordable Care Act include:

  • Friday November 8 at 2 pm: Cherry Hills Library, 6901 Barstow NE
  • Saturday November 9 at 10 am: South Valley Library, 3904 Isleta SW
  • Tuesday November 12 at 1 pm: Erna Fergusson Library, 3700 San Mateo NE
  • Thursday November 14 at 5 pm: Special Collections Library, 423 Central NE
  • Saturday November 16 at 1 pm: East Mountain Library, 1 Old Tijeras Rd., Tijeras

Others sessions are offered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of NM at the Main Library on Copper, on various dates. More sessions may also be added at the link.

I am one of the self-employed people trying to figure out whether to stay with my existing “grandfathered”  health care plan, which costs a lot for very few benefits… unless I fall out of a plane or something equally drastic. Or whether it would be better to switch from that ‘catastrophic health insurance’ plan to a different plan in the Health Insurance Marketplace at www.healthcare.gov.

So far I’ve managed to get myself signed up for the site… but I can’t actually log in to see the plans available. Sigh.  However, two of my friends who could not afford any health insurance at all before HAVE successfully navigated the site, and they are delighted with the good value plans they found.

Well, they promise the website technical hitches will be solved by the end of November.  Fingers crossed!

If you’re in the same or similar boat as me and uncertain about your Affordable Care Act options, I hope the free info sessions by ABC Library will be helpful.  If you go, let us know how useful it was in the comments box below!

Free Car Care Clinics & Oil Change Deal

Comments Off on Free Car Care Clinics & Oil Change Deal

Free car care clinics are pitched to women but the gents are just as welcome. And everyone saves with the oil change deal.

Nervous about jump-starting your flat battery? Car fluids a mystery to you? I consider myself quite car-savvy. I check my dipstick more often than I check my lipstick, and I’m all over my tire pressures, because I don’t fancy the idea of a flat on my nearly 20-year-old Jeep. (Very big and heavy with humongous tires. Don’t want to change that on my own one dark night.) Still, I’m not 100% sure of what ALL the fluid levels in my motor mean, although I’m pretty sure that having a better grasp on my motor maintenance would save bucks in the long run. (Or should I say, in the long drive?)

These free car care clinics by Maintence & More automotive specialists take place on the third Saturday of each month, and although they are described as women’s car care clinics, men are welcome too. Each one-hour session at their Coors Boulevard location starts at 10 am and covers a different car maintenance task:

  • January 21: Understanding Your Underhood
  • February 18: All About Brakes

Register for a free car care clinic in advance and turn up in your mucky clothes as it’s a hands-on class.

Oil Change Deal

Maintenance & More offers a Vanguard Protection Car Club oil change deal for $69.97, valid for your next FOUR oil changes, including the oil change with up to 5 quarts of oil and lube, free tire rotation, free mini detail, and a 47 point inspection. They reckon the package is worth nearly $240.  Ask for the deal at either the 3301 Coors Boulevard NW or the 135 Wyoming Boulevard NE Maintenance & More location.

A free wedding planning seminar, followed by a bridal show with tickets half price in advance.

If you’re getting hitched and looking for some wedding planning tips, a free Wedding Trends Seminar on Sunday October 23 might be just what you need to help you up the aisle. The 60-minute seminar promises to offer insider secrets to maximize your wedding budget by members of New Mexico Wedding Professionals, plus news on 2012 wedding trends, and tips on planning the perfect wedding. (In my humble opinion, a perfect wedding is one where the bride and groom love each other to bits, no matter how fancy the frock and the favors. Anything else is just icing on the wedding cake!)

They request registrations in advance for the free wedding planning seminar, which starts at 11:30 am at the Embassy Suites Hotel & Spa.

The seminar is followed by the Great Diamond Dash Bridal Show from 1 – 4 pm. Tickets for the bridal show are $10 on the door, but save by buying tickets online in advance for $5. The Great Diamond Dash Bridal Show includes a bridal fashion show, the chance to talk with Albuquerque wedding professionals, door prizes, and apparently five brides-to-be will dig into a wedding cake to find free diamond jewelry.

Wedding Trends Seminar: Insider Secrets to Maximize Your Budget takes place:

  • When: Sunday October 23, 2011
  • Time: 11:30 am – 12:30 pm.  Followed by the Great Diamond Dash Bridal Show from 1 – 4 pm .
  • Where: Embassy Suites Hotel & Spa
  • Admission: The seminar is free (register in advance) and the bridal show is $5 in advance, $10 on the door.

Pharmaca Free Webinar and Coupon

July 26, 2011 by

Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy runs a series of free webinars (I’ve just discovered) on various health topics.

The next one, on Wednesday July 27 at 12 noon Mountain Time is on the subject: Boost Your Brain: How to maintain good memory and cognitive function as you age.

Plus, everyone who attends the webinar is given a $10 Pharmaca coupon to spend in the store or online at the Pharmaca website.

I have an excellent memory, myself, especially when it comes to remembering that it’s Mr Cheap’s turn to do the dishes. But cognitive function in general is another question, so the free webinar definitely caught my eye.

Sorry, what free webinar was I talking about? (Shuffles notes.) Oh yes, I remember. The free webinar on how to maintain a good memory.

Register in advance for the Boost your Brain webinar on July 27, 2011, at 12 noon Mountain Time. It’s led by Dr. Bruce Price, associate professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, and you can also send a brain health question to him.  The webinar is an hour long, so I’d suggest you put the phone on speakerphone and sit back.

Previous Pharmaca Webinars are archived online so you can still hear them.  They include talks on Menopause Solutions and Better Sleep for good health.

Observant Cheapos will notice that the date shown on the Pharmaca webinar page for the Boost your Brain webinar is July 20. HOWEVER, the email we received this week from Pharmaca about the event definitely dates it as July 27, and the registration form is also for July 27. So I’m pretty confident it’s tomorrow, but it’s kinda funny that Pharmaca  forgot to update the website with the correct date of a talk on good memory…

Free Talk: Demystifying the Art of Sprouting

April 27, 2011 by
Filed under Shopping, Spas & Health

Comments Off on Free Talk: Demystifying the Art of Sprouting

Demystifying the Art of Sprouting must be one of our more interesting post titles in recent memory….  I didn’t think raw sprouts were particularly mysterious, but they are delicious, and I’ve never managed to grow them very well in our dry climate, and they always seem rather expensive when I buy them.

So maybe now’s the time to learn with this free seminar on Saturday at Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage. It could lay the groundwork (ha!) if you’re looking to pep up your diet with healthy sprouted foods.

Demystifying the Art of Sprouting on Saturday April 30, 2011, at 1 pm is led by lay nutritionist Lisa Ross, who once owned an organic salad greens business, and now  gives classes on sprouting and nutrition nationwide.

The seminar talks about the nutritional benefits of eating sprouted foods, with a live demonstration of sprouting, plus tips on including them in a daily diet, and recipes!

The talk is free, with no reservations required.

Realistically, the free talk is probably going to include recommendations of products you can conveniently buy at the store! But hopefully you can also pick up some useful tips, whether or not you buy. If you go, let us know!

Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage is located at 4420 Wyoming Blvd NE.

Beekeeping and Tree Pruning Seminars

March 7, 2011 by

Comments Off on Beekeeping and Tree Pruning Seminars

Free seminars and events on trees and bees! It’s a shame I can’t find any on peas, cheese, or skis…

A free fruit tree pruning workshop at the Open Space Visitor Center this Thursday March 10, at 9:30 am is led by Joran Viers, certified arborist and director of the Bernalillo County Extension Office. He’ll demonstrate best pruning techniques on the Visitor Center apple trees, to show you how to maintain a strong tree framework and keep the tree looking good, as well as encouraging fruit production and long life for the tree.  Bring your own pruning tools to go hands-on and learn for yourself. The workshop is free, but register in advance at Open Space Visitor Center – call (505) 897-8831

I spotted these free beekeeping events at Albuquerque Beekeepers. Here’s the buzz:

Free Webinar for 2nd Year Beekeepers on Wednesday March 9, 2011, at 5 – 6 pm Mountain Time.  An internet seminar on how to manage year two with your bees, to keep them healthy, build them up and produce yummy honey. (Mmm!) It’s a national class with a panel of beekeepers including Kim Flottum, the editor of Bee Culture Magazine. Although it’s free, space is limited. Register in advance at the link.

Albuquerque Beekeepers Meeting on Thursday March 24, 2011 from 6 – 8 pm. Newbie beekeepers are welcome and you don’t need to be a member to turn up to this free event where speaker Megan Mahoney discusses techniques for catching and managing swarms. There will also be general beekeeping Q&A. The venue is NMSU Extension office at 1510 Menaul NW.

There’s also a Free Beekeeping Seminar out in Edgewood on Saturday March 26, 2011, from 10 am – 1 pm, followed by a potluck. Edgewood is about a 35 minute drive east of Albuquerque via I-40, although it’s closer for our East Mountain readers of course!
