Free money management and financial advice bookGet Craig Guillot’s book Stuff About Money: No BS Financial Advice for Regular People at the link as a free Kindle book (or read it on your computer) until April 12.

My journalist colleague Craig Guillot had the brilliant idea to write a practical book about money management that we ordinary people can understand (cut out the jargon!) with tips from financial professionals on everything from real estate and retirement to insurance and savings. The book offers quick and relatively easy-to-do ways to boost financial security, one step at a time.

Usually the book costs $14.99 for the print edition or $9.99 for the eBook, but you can get a free download of Stuff About Money: No BS Financial Advice for Regular People for Kindle now through Friday April 12, 2013. Or, if you don’t have a Kindle, downloaded it to your computer or other mobile device, using Amazon’s free app at the link.

The freebie offer is in celebration of Financial Literacy Month, and it’s for two days only, on April 11 and 12, 2013.

I’ve read this book and I have to say it’s very straight-talking, sensible, and realistic. It aims to give some peace of mind and confidence about managing your money for a healthy financial life. It includes a section on “Why you should track your net worth no matter how little it may be.” My net worth is probably in the region of $7.48, although if I count Mr. Cheap as an asset, it may rocket into the double digits.

Of course, some assets are priceless 😉

Free Kindle book loans for Amazon Prime members, free book downloads even if you don’t own a Kindle, & free Amazon Prime memberships…

Amazon just announced that Amazon Prime subscribers can use the new Kindle Owners Lending Library
to borrow books for free. Amazon Prime costs $79 a year and includes unlimited free two day shipping and streaming of movies and TV shows. (They’re clearly trying to give Netflix a run for their money, and I’m still considering whether to switch all my viewing to Amazon Prime after the recent Netflix price increase.)

If you’re a Kindle owner with Amazon Prime you can start borrowing from a selection of thousands of books including many bestsellers, up to one book a month with no due return date. If you don’t have Amazon Prime you can get a free one month trial, with unlimited instant video streaming of movies and TV shows. Be sure to cancel your subscription before the free trial ends or select “do not upgrade” once you’re registered for the freebie, if you don’t want your credit card to be automatically charged for the $79 subscription at the end of the trial period.

Don’t have a Kindle?

Even if you don’t own a Kindle, you can read many of the free Kindle books, downloaded to a PC or other mobile device, using Amazon’s free app at the links:

Kindle Popular Book Classics that can also be downloaded to your computer or other mobile device, include Dracula, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Pride and Prejudice, Fairy Tales Every Child Should Know, Little Women, Treasure Island, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, and many more.

Kindle Store Limited Time Offers with freebies also available on PC include:

There are many more in the list but these free offers can change quickly, so may vary.

Free Amazon Prime: College Students and Child Carers

College students signing up for the free Amazon Student membership program also get Amazon Prime free for one year with free two-day shipping and no minimum order, plus student discounts.  The free offer does not include movie streaming, nor the Kindle library.

Similarly, the free Amazon Mom program is not just for moms – anyone caring for a baby or child can join – and benefits include free two-day shipping for three months, not just on child products but across all categories, 20% off diapers, and if you shop in the Baby Store, for every $25 you spend they’ll add another month of free two-day shipping to your account, up to a year’s worth. There’s no restriction on the child’s age and the program is open to moms-to-be, dads, grandparents, aunts, or anyone caring for a child. The Amazon Mom Frequently Asked Questions gives the full skinny, and again the free offer doesn’t include movie streaming.

Free ABQ Library eBooks, Video, Audio Book Downloads

Albuquerque and Bernalillo County libraries let you borrow ebooks, audio books, and videos online and download them at home, from the Albuquerque and Bernalillo County Libraries Digital Media website.

You need a library card to download up to four titles at a time, and “borrow” them for ten days. Once the lending time is up, titles automatically return to the library. If the title you want is borrowed already, you can place a hold on it – up to five titles at a time.

As far as I can fathom, the free downloads work on Windows PCs and Mac computers, iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry, and other devices, according to the type of digital media you’re borrowing. For example, ebooks are in Adobe PDFs, and audio books come in MP3 and other formats.  For some loans it may be necessary to download free software, provided at the library site.

Hope you find something entertaining in there to enjoy!

Free eBook: Math For Grownups

Free eBook Math for GrownUpsGet Laura Laing’s Math For Grownups in a free eBook for a limited time. If you get fractious over fractions, or perplexed over percentages, it could add up to read this book!

My writer friend Laura Laing had the brilliant idea to write a practical and fun book on math for grownups, to help people remember how to do some of the basic math that they’ve LONG forgotten from school. The book includes tips on how to use math in real life, from calculating finances to figuring fuel efficiency.

It’s the type of thing that comes in handy when you’re trying to help your kids with their math homework, or just working out the best shopping deals. (And you know we’re all about the best deals here at Cheap Central.)

Because Laura’s the kind of gal to keep everything simple (not just the math), she picked a very straightforward title for her book about math for grownups. It’s called Math for Grownups. Gotta love that!

I love this even better: Through September 10, you can download a free eBook of Math for Grownups, courtesy of publisher Adams Media, as a back to school deal. That saves $14.95 on the regular eBook edition, which needs no calculation to figure out:  It’s a steal.

The free Math for Grownups eBook is only available until Saturday September 10, 2011.  It’s in various formats: Kindle, NOOK, Apple/iTunes, and Google eBookstore.  You may need to download some free software to eg. read the Kindle version on your PC.

You can also buy Math for Grownups in paperback (currently around $10) at Amazon or in bookstores, if you prefer to read a hard copy book or you missed the freebie deal.

My favorite math joke is that you should ALWAYS wear glasses when you’re doing math… because it improves divison.

–Tania FYI I’ve given you my Amazon affiliate link for the paperback version.

Free eBooks, Video, Audio Book Downloads for Library Members

Albuquerque and Bernalillo County libraries let you borrow ebooks, audio books, and videos online and download them at home. Free books online – love it! This truly is the 21st century, and I’m just catching up with it…

The Albuquerque and Bernalillo County Libraries Digital Media website is a one-stop online library for ebooks and audio books including fiction and nonfiction, and videos from classic films and comedies, to documentaries, dramas, cartoons and animations, and children’s videos.

Of course you need a library card, and members may download up to four titles at a time, and “borrow” them for ten days.

The ebooks can be transferred to the Barnes & Noble Nook with these instructions, but can’t be read on Amazon’s Kindle. (But you can get the top 100 free books for Kindle at Amazon.)

It’s a 24-hour service, so I reckon this is super-handy if you find youself bored one night and you want some quick free entertainment. It’s great if you’re traveling too, and didn’t make it to the library before you left town. And at a time when Netflix just increased its prices on certain plans… need I say more? The video selection obviously isn’t as huge as a commercial site, but hey, it’s free!

Find all the titles to borrow and tutorials at the Albuquerque and Bernalillo County Libraries Digital Media website.

Don’t pay to download… free books and games for Kindles, and some for a PC or other mobile device too!

I don’t have a Kindle yet, although as I’m an avid reader it’s probably only a matter of time. And the Kindle does seem very useful for travel, rather than agonizing over which book I want to read on vacation. I end up taking so many tomes there’s barely room in the car for Mr Cheap, and he gets chilly on the roof rack. One device with a ton of book choices on it sounds pretty nifty, and could be a marriage saver!

There are lots of free eBooks and games available, although the offers change quickly. Some are Kindle only, others can be downloaded to a PC or other mobile device, using Amazon’s free app at the links.

Kindle Popular Book Classics that can also be downloaded to your computer or other mobile device, including Dracula, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Pride and Prejudice, Fairy Tales Every Child Should Know, Little Women, Treasure Island, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, and many more.

Kindle Store Limited Time Offers including freebies: The Sword Lord, The Bad Widow, Crime Scene at Cardwell Ranch, Star Wars: Lost Tribe of the Sith #2: Skyborn, and a bunch of text books.

Free Kindle Games including Mine Sweeper, Blackjack and Every Word.

These offers may change out over time, so if you see a freebie you want, best to download it soon!

Thanks to Kate at Tucson on the Cheap for telling us about the free games!
