Free Composting Classes

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to ABQ on the Cheap's RSS feed or email digests. Thanks for visiting!

Free composting and vermicomposting classes? I’ll need my rubber gloves for this one!

As far as I’m aware, there are three advantages of composting.  Firstly, it’s a good way to dispose of organic waste, including leaves and cut grass. Secondly, it’s great for mulching and aeration if you’re into organic gardening, rather than buying commercial fertilizers. And last but not least… it’s free!

But what do I know? Mr Cheap has the green thumb around here. With the exception of my lovingly-tended herbs, I only have to look at a plant and it withers. (Even if I have my make-up on.)

If you’re interested in learning about composting, Bernalillo County Extension Master Composters offer a bunch of free composting classes for all ages at various locations, including vermicomposting or composting with worms.

Although the classes are free they require registration before the event, so check details at the link to see where to phone or email to register for each class, as well as full info on times and locations.

These are the upcoming free composting classes for the remainder of 2012, but check the schedule in case of changes:

  • November 6: Backyard Composting Lecture at 7 pm (Rio Rancho)
  • November 10: Advanced Composting forum for those with composting experience (Gutierrez-Hubbell House)
  • November 14: Basic Composting Class
  • November 17: Vermicomposting / Worm Composting Class
  • December 1: Basic Composting Class
  • December 15: Vermicomposting / Worm Composting Class

Artists and creative types can attend these workshops for free, but spaces are limited, so reserve in advance.

The South Broadway Cultural Center is holding more free workshops for artists. One is a Retablo Artist Workshop to learn how to create this traditional art form over three hours on September 8. Another, in good time to celebrate the Day of the Dead, is a Sugar Skull Workshop to make and decorate your own sugar skull folk art on October 17. We  mentioned last month the Mask-Making Workshop on September 12 – 13 but here’s a reminder in case they have any spaces left. The class is spread over two days (3 hours a day) and teaches the fundamentals of mask-making, plus you take away the mask you make.

All classes only have space for 30 students, so book the free art workshops in advance.

Contact the South Broadway Cultural Center to register or get more info on their arts workshops: (505) 848-1320

South Broadway Cultural Center is located at 1025 Broadway SE.

If you’re trying to conjure up something free to do this weekend in Albuquerque, here’s an idea for anyone with a budding wizard in the family or a wannabe David Copperfield.

Pop on your pointy hat and shout abracadabra… The Magic and Juggling Shop in Nob Hill holds a free Magician’s Apprentice workshop on the third Saturday of every month at 11 am.

The hour-long workshop is an intro to magic for aspiring magicians aged 7 and upwards, and in an hour you probably won’t make any buildings disappear, but we’ve all got to start somewhere.

The next Magician’s Apprentice workshop is on Saturday July 21, 2012 at 11 am. No need to book in advance – just magically appear!

Even if you’re not going to the workshop, it’s worth noting that first time visitors to the store get a free magic trick when they drop in to check out the magic, juggling, and practical joke supplies.

Although the monthly Magician’s Apprentice workshops are ongoing, if you’re reading this in a future time warp from the date of posting, contact the store in case they change the schedule.

The Magic and Juggling Shop is located at 3205 Central Avenue NE

The City of Albuquerque’s fourth annual Recycled Art Fair talks trash on April 21, 2012, with plenty of free family fun and workshops.

The Albuquerque Recycled Art Fair at the Open Space Visitor Center is on Saturday April 21 from 9 am to 5 pm, and admission is free.

First off you can see recycled art – a.k.a. upcycled art – made from discarded materials, both in the juried art show and for sale at the booths. I guess at least you know that every piece of art is unique!

The event also includes demos and free workshops on how to make your own recycled art, including a tin punch workshop, paper-making, and free writing workshop, sustainable gardening info, kids’ activities, live music and (of course) food vendors. Highlights include:

  • Kids’ creativity center and face painters
  • Workshops in composting, worm composting, water harvesting, seeds, and waterwise gardening
  • Styrofoam print workshop at 10am
  • Free reload Your Writing workshop with Lisa Piatetsky for beginning to advanced writers at 11 am
  • Chautauqua on conservationist Rachel Carson by Ann Beyke at 2 pm

The Recycled Art Fair schedule might change (or be recycled) so see the latest event details at the link.

  • When: Saturday April 21, 2012
  • Time: 9 am – 5 pm
  • Where: Open Space Visitor Center
  • Price: Free

Albuquerque Open Space Visitor Center is located at 6500 Coors Boulevard NW. (East of Coors at the end of Bosque Meadows Road, between Montano Boulevard and Paseo del Norte.)

Free How to Get Organized Call

How to get organized? You tell me. As usual, I’m frantically decluttering, before I disappear under piles of paperwork, files, STUFF, and Mr Cheap never sees me again. (Hmm, maybe he wouldn’t mind so much… until it comes to dinner time.)

Organization and streamlining is always on my mind, otherwise I’m juggling my endless List of Things To Do on a messy desk, and not being as efficient as I could be…  therefore losing time that I could spend having more fun. Like, getting out to more of the fab free Albuquerque events I post about!

If you relate at all, maybe you’d like to know about a free More Than Organized Phone Q & A on Your Organizing, Simplifying, and Streamlining Dilemmas, on Tuesday February 14 at 6 pm Moutain Time.

Miriam Ortiz y Pino will be answering callers’ questions on how to get and stay organized, simplifying life, and streamlining work. She’s a Certified Professional Organizer in Albuquerque, and in addition to her paid services and teleclasses, she also offers occasional free phone events and Q&A sessions like this one.

I’m not sure Valentine’s Day is the best time to be thinking about logistics instead of love, but if you can’t make the call, you can still send a question in advance. The call will be recorded and an audio link emailed afterwards.

Register for the free More Than Organized call in advance. (Scroll way down at the link to find the free call, after the other teleclasses.) Happy organizing!
