Fishing Derby at Tingley BeachDad, mom, the kids, couples, singles, anyone who’s handy with a rod is welcome to join a fun day of fishing in the free fishing derby at Tingley Beach.

Albuquerque’s 8th Annual Free Fishing Derby takes place on Saturday April 12, 2014, from 7:15 am to 4 pm.

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish will stock 5000 rainbow trout for the fishing derby, and 200 fishing derby prizes are up for grabs for those catching a tagged rainbow trout between 7:15 am and 4 pm.

The Tingley Beach Fishing Derby is for all ages, although you need a New Mexico fishing license to take part if you’re aged 12 years or older. If you don’t have one, they’re no longer for sale at Tingley Beach but the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish gives a list of where to buy a NM fishing license. I understand that the nearest vender to Tingley Beach is at the Kmart on Central Avenue, west of the river.

During the fishing derby, the Tingley Beach Café and Convenience inside the Tingley Station will be open and selling food and drink.

Note that Tingley Beach will close the evening before, at 5 pm on Friday April 11, to prepare for the derby.

Fish Without A License: September 28

Comments Off on Fish Without A License: September 28

According to the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, there are only two dates in 2013 when it’s legal to fish without a license in the state of New Mexico. I already told you about the first one earlier this summer and the second date is coming right up!

On Saturday September 28, 2013, anyone may fish without a license in New Mexico. This gives newbies a chance to try out the sport of fishing without having to buy a license.  The perfect place to go fishing in Albuquerque is at Tingley Beach, so there might be quite a few people gathering for the Tingley Beach Fish Without a License day. The Tingley Beach ponds will be open so you can fish without a license for free from dawn to dusk on September 28. That’s from 7 am until 7 pm.

This is all part of National Hunting and Fishing Day. The Tingley Beach free fishing might be a bit of a party and it should be fun for kids who want to try out their skills!  You could go crazy and take a picnic too, or just have a leisurely hike around the ponds. Note that all other fishing rules and regs still apply even on the days when you can fish without a license.

Tingley Beach is always so peaceful. You’re just a stone’s throw away from the city buzz, but out there by the ponds it’s very tranquil. I don’t know if they will have the model boats sailing around too on Saturday (it could be too much congestion!) but I find those delightful to watch. And I always love the statue of Clyde and Carrie Tingley at Tingley Beach – one of the most touching and cheer-inspiring statues in Albuquerque, in my opinion.

Tingley Beach is part of the Albuquerque BioPark at 1800 Tingley Drive SW.

Comments Off on Free Fishing Fair for Kids: February 23

Water is not in great abundance in New Mexico, so any activity that encourages water recreation is great by us. Fishing definitely ranks right up there, so here’s a chance to get the youngsters outside.

The Kids’ Fishing Fair at Tingley Beach on Saturday February 23 is for children aged 4 to 12 years old and it’s completely free for all! The Fishing Fair runs from 10 am to 2 pm, with interactive discovery stations and activities to learn about fishing around Tingley Beach.

There is also a free fly-fishing class on February 23 where kids can learn how to make a fly, tie a fly and cast a fly rod to catch trout. This class is open to children aged up to 15 years, and you can drop in to that at any time between 9 am and 1 pm.

It’s a bit confusing having the two events overlapping but at slightly different times and for different ages. However, the free fly-fishing class, led by ABQ Biopark Tingley Beach volunteers and New Mexico Trout experts, is a regular monthly event. The next one after February 23 will be on March 28 from 9 am to 1 pm.

Note that kids aged 12 years or older need a New Mexico fishing license. If you don’t have one, they’re apparently no longer selling them at Tingley Beach but the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish gives a list of where to buy a NM fishing license. I understand that the nearest vender to Tingley Beach is at the Kmart on Central Avenue, west of the river.

No registration is required for Saturday’s fishing fair, just turn up.

Tingley Beach Kids’ Fishing Fair and fly-fishing lesson takes place on Saturday February 23, 2013:

  • Fishing fair from 10 am – 2 pm for kids aged 4 to 12
  • Fly-fishing lesson from 9 am and 1 pm for youngsters aged up to 15

Dad, mom, the kids, couples, singles, anyone who’s handy with a rod is welcome to join a fun day of fishing in the free fishing derby at Tingley Beach.

Albuquerque’s 5th Annual Free Fishing Derby takes place on Saturday March 12, 2011, from 7 am to 4 pm. If you missed our earlier post on this event, the fishing derby is for all ages, although you need a New Mexico fishing license to take part. The Tingley Beach Outfitters can kit you out with licenses and other fishing gear if you don’t have everything you need already. Check out the Tingley Beach Fishing Licenses and Rules here.

No point asking me anything about fishing. I love watching people fish at Tingley Beach when I go for a walk there, they always seem so calm and zen-like, but I don’t know the first thing about it myself and I’m not even quite sure what a fishing derby is – it just sounds great fun. Especially as they’ll have food and drinks for sale… well, it’s comfort in case you don’t catch as much as you’d hoped :-)

  • Where: Tingley Beach
  • Price: Free, but you must have a valid fishing license.
