Tasty news for SNAP shoppers! When you use your EBT card at participating farmers’ markets, you’ll now receive an equal number of Two-for-One Bonus Dollars on eligible food purchases.

SNAP is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, previously known as food stamps, and this New Mexico farmers’ markets initative started August 30, following an award by Governor Bill Richardson of $50,0000 of stimulus funding for SNAP customers.

Double your dollars at 16 New Mexico farmers’ markets that accept EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) cards, including these markets in the Albuquerque area:

  • Albuquerque Downtown Growers Market
  • Bernalillo Farmers Market
  • Belen Farmers Market
  • Los Lunas Farmers Market

The SNAP program serves 157,000+ New Mexico families with incomes up to 165% of the Federal Poverty Level, and here at Cheap Central we think this is a terrific initiative, helping families in the SNAP program to enjoy more good fresh food from our wonderful land, and it supports farmers too – you can buy more locally-grown produce from them!

The Farmers’ Market bonus dollars program continues until funds are spent, or through the end of 2010, whichever comes first. Obviously some of the farmers markets close after the season is over around October, so if you’ve an EBT card, this is the time to shop the harvest, and double your dollars!

The Los Ranchos Growers’ and Arts & Crafts Markets have always been known for their healthy,  locally grown produce, local honey, and other good-for-you stuff. But this coming weekend, they’re plunging into health and wellness in a BIG way!

On Saturday, June 20 (2009), from 7:00 – 11:00am, head over to the Los Ranchos Markets for a full-blown FREE wellness fair. Confirmed participants (more may be coming onboard) include:

  • Certified herbalists
  • Bernalillo County Extension Nutrition Educators
  • MRCOG — trails info
  • UNM Cancer Center
  • UNM College of Nursing
  • UNM Center for Life (preventive and integrative specialty clinic)
  • Victory Gardening Services

…and many others we don’t have room to list! You’ll be able to score tons of free information (and, we suspect, free samples) from a bunch of additional vendors.

On the growers’ market side, you may find blackberries, sugar snap peas, spinach, chard, kale, micro greens, cabbage, radishes, young summer squash, farm fresh eggs, potted herbs, organic jams — and many other tasty treats! And don’t forget the arts and crafts market, where you’ll find:

  • Ornaments
  • Pottery
  • Japanese porcelain
  • Soy candles
  • Handpainted silk scarves
  • Handmade soaps
  • Hand crafted jewelry

…and, again, way too much for us to mention! It’s all free to the public.

You’ll find the Los Ranchos Growers’ and Arts & Crafts Markets in the tennis court parking lot at 6718 Rio Grande Blvd NW, Albuquerque.

Full disclosure: ABQ on the Cheap is a minor sponsor of the Los Ranchos Arts & Crafts Market; we run a free text ad for them at the bottom of each post.
