Free Composting Classes

Free composting classes and vermicomposting classes too? I’ll need my rubber gloves for this one!

As far as I’m aware, there are three advantages of composting.  Firstly, it’s a good way to dispose of veggie peelings and other food and organic waste, including leaves and cut grass. (The smart people at the Open Space Visitor Center tell me that food waste is the single largest and least recovered waste stream in the USA.)

Secondly, composting is great for mulching and aeration if you’re into organic gardening, rather than buying commercial fertilizers. And last but not least… it’s free!

I’m no gardening expert. (Mr Cheap has the green thumb around here. With the exception of my lovingly-tended herbs, I usually only have to look at a plant and it withers… even if I have my make-up on.) But I’ve planted a strip of green beans, kale, Swiss chard, and broccoli this season, all nourished by our own compost, and they’re doing pretty well so far. Fingers crossed!

If you’re interested in learning about composting, Bernalillo County Extension Master Composters offer a bunch of free composting classes for all ages at various locations, including vermicomposting or composting with worms.

Although the classes are free they usually require registration before the event, so check details at the link to see where to phone or email to register for each class, as well as full info on times and locations.

Cheap water exercises classes in AlbuquerqueWater exercise classes at City of Albuquerque swimming pools are just $2.50 each, or even cheaper if you splash out on a 10 lesson punch card!

I love water aerobics – you keep your cool, get fit, reduce stress with a good splash around, and they’re usually a lot of laughs.  Well, I’ve noticed that people laugh at ME anyhow.

The water exercise classes at Albuquerque swimming pools are super value too – just $2.50 a splash or save $4 on ten classes when you buy a punch card for 10 classes for $21. Classes are ongoing,  so you can twang into your Lycra and join in at any time!

Comments Off on Free Art Workshops: Retablo, Sugar Skull, Mask

Artists and creative types can attend these workshops for free, but spaces are limited, so reserve in advance.

The South Broadway Cultural Center is holding more free workshops for artists. One is a Retablo Artist Workshop to learn how to create this traditional art form over three hours on September 8. Another, in good time to celebrate the Day of the Dead, is a Sugar Skull Workshop to make and decorate your own sugar skull folk art on October 17. We  mentioned last month the Mask-Making Workshop on September 12 – 13 but here’s a reminder in case they have any spaces left. The class is spread over two days (3 hours a day) and teaches the fundamentals of mask-making, plus you take away the mask you make.

All classes only have space for 30 students, so book the free art workshops in advance.

Contact the South Broadway Cultural Center to register or get more info on their arts workshops: (505) 848-1320

Free Zumba Class: August 8

August 5, 2012 by
Filed under Spas & Health, Sport & Leisure

I know there are many Albuquerque Zumba fans out there, and if you’ve heard about it and not tried it, here’s an event where you can try Zumba for free!

Turn up for the free Zumba class on Wednesday August 8, 2012, from noon to 1 pm, at the Downtown Harry E. Kinney Civic Plaza. The instructors from Salsa Baby will teach the fun class of Zumba, and if you don’t know what Zumba is, it’s a Latin-inspired dance fitness to salsa and merengue beats.

It’s a good excuse for a free workout in your lunch break, although I guess that Civic Plaza might feel a little too public if you’re shy. But everyone else will be doing the Zumba/salsa aerobics class too, and you can just ignore the passing traffic. They’re probably jealous that they can’t be grooving down and joining the outdoor Zumba party too.

CYL Fitness Half Off First Class

Comments Off on CYL Fitness Half Off First Class

CYL Fitness has just moved to its new location in Albuquerque, and they emailed me to say they’ve a special offer for ABQ on the Cheap readers until July 1…

In keeping with the new location, NEW visitors to CYL Fitness can get half off your first exercise class when you mention that you read it here at Albuquerque on the Cheap.  The deal is only for first-time clients, for one class, not on full memberships, and it’s valid until July 1, 2012. CYL Fitness classes look like they usually cost $6 at regular rates, and you can see the current schedule at the link, including Zumba, Stretch, and Kickboxing.

Remember that to get the 50% discount on your first class you must say you saw the offer at ABQ on the Cheap. (They actually said that “clients must mention this ad” but of course it’s not an advertisement because nobody is paying me for it. It’s editorial. However, if you do want to advertise on ABQ on the Cheap, you can see our very reasonable banner ad rates at the link. And I’ll love you. For deal tips to be considered for editorial posts, keep on throwing them over by email or at our submit your deal page.  I’ll love you too.)

I also notice a CYL Fitness BOGO free coupon for classes. (Scroll down the page at the link, it’s way down in the bottom.) The coupon is for first time visitors who take a friend, and it can’t be combined with any other special offers.

The new CYL Fitness Albuquerque location is at 5842 Osuna Rd NE.

Happy Arte Hour

Comments Off on Happy Arte Hour

Happy Arte Hour is a free event for adults at the NHCC, and it’s a chance to get your creative groove on…  The next ones are on May 3 and June 7, 2012.

The National Hispanic Cultural Center Happy Arte Hour features Albuquerque artists teaching some of the basics in their art form, with a chance to socialize and get to know your creative neighbors over chips and salsa – there’s also a cash bar available on these Thursday evenings.

The events are for adults, and it’s free to join in, although donations are welcome to help keep the program going and pay the artists.  Also let the organizers know you’re going so they can make sure to provide enough materials for you.

Upcoming session are:

Thursday May 3: Papel Picado Happe Arte Hour with Catalina Delgado Trunk from 5:30 – 7:30 pm, learning about the basics of papel picado, or cut paper, using patterns. I always love seeing Catalina Delgado Trunk’s art at various events around town – her work is so intricate and beautiful. I’m sure my own paper-cutting technique would look like a rabid mouse had been gnawing at it.

Thursday June 7: Playful Clay Creations with Micaela Seidel. Go hands-on with clay from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.

Let them know you’re going by emailing Erica Garcia so they can plan the space and supplies needed. Happe Arte Hour is held at the NHCC’s Domenici Education Building.

The National Hispanic Cultural Center is located at 1701 4th Street SW, Albuquerque.

The City of Albuquerque’s fourth annual Recycled Art Fair talks trash on April 21, 2012, with plenty of free family fun and workshops.

The Albuquerque Recycled Art Fair at the Open Space Visitor Center is on Saturday April 21 from 9 am to 5 pm, and admission is free.

  • Kids’ creativity center and face painters
  • Workshops in composting, worm composting, water harvesting, seeds, and waterwise gardening
  • Styrofoam print workshop at 10am
  • Free reload Your Writing workshop with Lisa Piatetsky for beginning to advanced writers at 11 am
  • Chautauqua on conservationist Rachel Carson by Ann Beyke at 2 pm

The Recycled Art Fair schedule might change (or be recycled) so see the latest event details at the link.
