One Bird One Stone by author Sean Murphy, introduction by Natalie Goldberg

New Mexico writers Sean Murphy and Natalie Goldberg read at a free author event at Bookworks on May 21.

Sean Murphy (aka Mr Cheap!) will be reading and talking about the new edition of his book One Bird, One Stone: 108 Contemporary Zen Stories at Bookworks on Tuesday, May 21 at 7pm. The 2013 edition has a new introduction by Natalie Goldberg (the best-selling author of books including Writing Down the Bones, Wild Mind and the new book The True Secret of Writing) and Goldberg will be presenting at the event too.

Of course I’m biased as I’m married to author Sean Murphy, but I think that One Bird One Stone is one of his best books, full of beautiful Zen wisdom and moving stories, as well as Zen humor.

The book describes notable encounters between American Zen teachers and students, moments of insight and tons of quotable quotes. The book also covers the history of Zen in America and includes interviews with and stories about important figures like Philip Kapleau, Bernie Glassman, Gary Snyder, and Walter Nowick.

The Sean Murphy with Natalie Goldberg author reading and talk takes place:

  • When:   Tuesday May 21, 2013
  • Time:   7 pm
  • Where:  Bookworks, 4022 Rio Grande Blvd NW
  • Price: Free!

I’ll be there, so if you come along please find me and say Hi!

Comments Off on American Girl Saige Albuquerque Event

Fans of the Saige American Girl series can meet the author in Albuquerque this week, at an event for kids at the Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum.

Jessie Hass, author of the book series featuring Girl of the Year, Saige Copeland, is at the Balloon Museum in Albuquerque this Friday May 10, in an event that runs from 4:30 – 6:30 pm.  The books Saige and Saige Paints the Sky are about the little girl (and the American Girl Saige doll character) who loves hanging out on her grandma’s ranch in Albuquerque,  where she paints and rides horses and apparently spots lots of hot air balloons. (If you’ve actually read the books and can tell us more, please feel free to comment in the box below!)

In the meet-the-author and storytelling event on Friday, you can also enjoy activities including making art, and seeing live horses. Girls can dress up to suit the Saige theme too, if they like – as a cowgirl or an artist perhaps.

Of course you can buy the book too at the event, co-sponsored by Bookworks, and get Jessie Haas to sign it. That would be super-special for any little girls who love that series!

The American Girl: The Year of Saige event requires the regular Balloon Museum admission fee:

  • Adults:  $4, or $3 for New Mexico residents. Take NM resident ID to get the $1 off admission!
  • Seniors aged 65+:  $2
  • Children aged 4 – 12:  $1
  • Kids aged 3 and under get in free!

Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum is at 9201 Balloon Museum Dr NE.

–Tania. FYI this post contains Amazon affiliate links so you can see more about American Girl Saige. However, I’d encourage you to buy the book from Bookworks at the event itself – that way you can get it signed by the author!

Natalie Goldberg True Secret of Writing: Albuquerque Author Event March 20

Comments Off on Natalie Goldberg True Secret of Writing: Albuquerque Author Event March 20

New Mexico writer Natalie Goldberg is in Albuquerque on March 20 as part of her new book tour.

Natalie Goldberg is the best-selling author of books including Writing Down the Bones and Wild Mind and her new book is called The True Secret of Writing. She’s a wonderful writer and writing teacher (I speak from experience) and a very witty and wise presenter. Any evening at a Goldberg event is bound to be entertaining and inspiring.

So, right on cue, here’s a free Natalie Goldberg event at Bookworks on Wednesday March 20, 2013,
at 7 pm. I imagine they’ll have a good turnout as she’s such a popular writer and speaker and I’d advise arriving early.

The new book describes Goldberg’s latest thoughts on the writing practice approach that she’s taught for many years in residential seminars in Taos, NM, and at workshops across the US and overseas.  I for one can’t wait to read it. It’s published on March 19, so this is pretty much the first chance to get to hear about it as part of Natalie Goldberg’s national book tour. She used to live in Albuquerque so I guess that’s why the tour kicks off here!

The Natalie Goldberg Albuquerque author reading and talk takes place:

  • When:   Wednesday March 20, 2013
  • Time:   7 pm
  • Where:  Bookworks, 4022 Rio Grande Blvd NW
  • Price: Free!

JK Rowling Webcast Talk at Bookworks: October 16

Comments Off on JK Rowling Webcast Talk at Bookworks: October 16

Yes, that J.K. Rowling! The Harry Potter author has now turned her talented hand at writing for adults with her new book The Casual Vacancy.

I mentioned this exclusive (and free!) Bookworks event in a ‘save the date’ post a few weeks ago, but here’s a reminder that Bookworks hosts a J.K. Rowling webcast live from New York City on Tuesday October 16, 2012, at 6 pm. That means the author will not be physically IN the Albuquerque store, of course, but as Bookworks is one of the few American bookstores selected to participate in Rowling’s webcast, the store can also submit questions to Ms Rowling for her to answer live during the broadcast. How cool is that?

J.K. Rowling will be talking about The Casual Vacancy with author Ann Patchett in New York.  Ann Patchett is a terrific author herself, with books including Bel Canto and (my favorite) Run. This is apparently Rowling’s only US author appearance. Maybe she wants to rush back to Hogwarts.

Seating is naturally limited within the store, and Bookworks recommends people arrive early for this free event, by about 5:45 pm for the 6 pm start. Personally, I’d suggest getting there a lot earlier. This event could be packed as it’s such a neat idea and a rare opportunity. While you’re waiting you can always browse the store.

Bookworks will have copies of The Casual Vacancy available during the JK Rowling webcast. I can’t wait to read it and find out if Rowling’s storytelling for adults is as great as her Harry Potter books.  I think I read every one of those page-turners in about two days flat.

Bookworks is located at 4022 Rio Grande Boulevard NW, next to Flying Star Cafe.

Bookworks Teacher Appreciation Party

Comments Off on Bookworks Teacher Appreciation Party

Bookworks is throwing a special event for educators, with 25% off purchases.

Teachers turning up for the Bookworks Teacher Appreciation Party on Monday October 15, 2012, can expect a little more than an apple! The event starts at 4 pm, with a 25% discount for educators on all purchases from 4 pm onwards. That’s not just a discount on books, but on cards, mugs, soaps, and the other gift items on sale at Bookworks. (I can spend hours in there. And I often do.)

Other out-of-the-classroom activities include a 6 pm appearance by Stephen McCranie, the author of the Mal and Chad series of graphic novels, to give a talk and sign books. Expect a mini yoga clinic, chocolate tasting (yum! I always like chocolate after my yoga, or even during my yoga) and refreshments and prize drawings.

Yay to Bookworks for offering an event to celebrate teachers, because by golly I don’t know where I would be without some wonderful teachers who helped me when I was a mere lass. Hard to imagine I was ever a mere lass, but I promise it’s true.

Bookworks is an independent bookstore, located at 4022 Rio Grande Blvd NW, next to Flying Star Cafe.

But this post is to give you a heads-up to save the date for an exclusive (and free!) Bookworks event.

Child reading book © Stuart Miles | Dreamstime.comBookworks holds a one-day summer sale on July 7, with 20% off nearly everything in the store.

The Bookworks sale runs from 9 am to 9 pm on Saturday July 7, so there’s plenty of time to get down there! The 20% discount is on everything except gift certificates, ticket sales, and event books. Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond Free Event

Comments Off on Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond Free Event

Ree Drummond of the Pioneer Woman blog pays a visit to Albuquerque on April 30, 2012, and if you want to see her, tickets are free!

Drummond writes the entertaining Pioneer Woman blog – there are lots of free recipes on there too. You can hear her talk about her new cookbook The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Food From My Frontier at 6 pm on Monday April 30, when Bookworks hosts Ree Drummond Pioneer Woman in a free event at the Simms Center for the Performing Arts Auditorium.

Although tickets are free, you have to get them in advance (because they’ve only got limited space). There are two options: Either reserve free tickets online with no charge if you choose the will-call option to pick them up at the door on the evening. Otherwise, you pay for ticket shipping, but I can’t see the point of doing that.

OR pop in to Bookworks to get your tickets (but not if you order them online. If you’re going to Bookworks, forget ordering them online, just go into the shop.)

Drummond’s children’s book Charlie the Ranch Dog and her memoir Black Heels to Tractor Wheels will also be available for purchase.

Albuquerque Academy is located at 6400 Wyoming Boulevard NE, at Wyoming and Academy. Find Bookworks at 4022 Rio Grande Boulevard NW, next to Flying Star Cafe.

Bookworks and Page One Holiday Deals

December 4, 2011 by

Book Coupon Page OneA Page One bookstore coupon and a Bookworks gift with purchase make holiday shopping a little easier on the pocket!

As a writer and avid reader I’m always keen to support initiatives to help people read more. And I’m especially keen to support our local owned independent bookstores…. especially when we save money too.

Print out this Page One coupon to save $5 on any $30 purchase until December 31, 2011.  It could come in handy if you’re shopping for yourself, or if you’re looking for holiday gifts, and it’s valid on both new and used purchases.

For Albuquerque on the Cheap readers with a smart phone or other internet enabled doohickey, you don’t even have to use the Page One printable coupon. Just show it on your “web capable mobile device” to the cashier to get the $5 discount.

Over at Bookworks, they’re giving a free gift with purchases this holiday season. Spend $50-75 and receive a free copy of Christmas in New Mexico to keep or give. When you spend $75-100, the freebie is the Book Lover’s 2012 Desk Calendar. Shop for more than $125, and they’ll give you both gifts! Bookworks also offer free gift-wrapping on request.

I think I’ve had that Book Lover’s calendar before, or one very like it. I really enjoyed that calendar, and I need to add it to my Christmas wish list.  If I don’t plan in advance, I end up buying a calendar…. oooh, about February, when the only choices left are the ones nobody else wants (and usually for a reason).

Page One Bookstore is located at 11018 Montgomery NE.

Find Bookworks at 4022 Rio Grande Blvd NW, next to Flying Star Cafe.
