Freebies for Kids with Dion’s Club Read

Comments Off on Freebies for Kids with Dion’s Club Read

Dion’s Club Read is a great way to encourage kids to read, because they get FREE gifts in return… and maybe a chance to be Orbit’s guest at Isotopes Park!

The Dion’s Club Read program is for for preschool to 5th grade kids, running till July 25, 2014. The program is a partnership between Dion’s Pizza and the Albuquerque Isotopes, so it has a baseball theme – what’s not to love?

Here’s how it works: Pick up a scorecard brochure at a Dion’s location, or download it from the Dion’s Club Read website. After a child reads any six books of their choice (or it’s fine for parents and teachers to read books to youngsters who are still learning to read) they fill in the scorecard with the name of the books and they’ve hit a home run! The completed scorecard earns the student free gifts and a new scorecard. The child receives a different free gift for each scorecard they fill:

  • The prize for the First Home Run (the first scorecard of six books read) is a free backpack and an official Club Read T-shirt.
  • For the Second Home Run (the second scorecard of six books read) the child gets a ticket voucher to watch an Isotopes game, a coupon for a free small drink at Isotopes Park, and a new book.  They also get entered into a prize drawing.

The prize drawing is to win tickets to be Orbit’s guest at the Isotopes game with four Club Level seat tickets, plus a Dion’s Pizza, a Dion’s $20 gift card, and an autographed baseball. AND the child can make a ceremonial first pitch! How cool is that? If this doesn’t encourage kids to read, then I don’t know what will!

The Dion’s Club Read program is for preschool children through 5th grade, and it runs until Friday July 25, 2014.

All the Dion’s locations and details on how the offer works are in the brochure on the Dion’s Club Read webpage.

Albuquerque Mother of Twins Sale

Heads-up on a spring garage sale on April 5 with plenty of bargains…

Savvy Albuquerque parents know better than to pay full price for clothes the kids quickly outgrow. That’s why these types of consignment sales and garage sales of gently-used children’s stuff have become so popular. Everyone saves dollars, you recycle perfectly good clothes to a new family, and, let’s face it, it’s just fun to rummage around in search of a deal!

In the massive Albuquerque Mother of Twins Sale on Saturday April 5, 2014, Albuquerque moms (and dads) can shop for cheap children’s and baby clothing plus maternity items, toys, nursery equipment, furniture and more. The garage sale is organized by the Albuquerque Mother of Twins Club and admission is only $1.

Obviously the bargains you find will vary according to who is selling what, but the sale usually includes a selection of gently-used:

  • Baby and children’s clothes and shoes for spring and summer, for ages newborn through 14 years old
  • Toys and games
  • Nursery equipment
  • Maternity clothing
  • Craft supplies
  • Outdoor equipment
  • Kids’ costume and dress-up gear
  • Kids’ furniture and items such as strollers, car seats, high chairs, and cribs
  • Plus household items, electronics, books, CDs and DVDs

The Albuquerque Mother of Twins sale usually has about 85+ vendors, so there should be plenty to choose from. The fundraiser usually includes a bake sale and there will be a food truck.

The Albuquerque Mother of Twins sale for spring will be held:

  • When: Saturday April 5, 2014
  • Time: 7:30 am – 2 pm, but the line to get in might start as early as 6:30 am!
  • Where: Montgomery Church of Christ, 7201 Montgomery Boulevard NE
  • Price: Admission is $1

They recommend leaving kids at home as the sale gets pretty packed and there isn’t enough space for strollers in the aisles. Carry infants on your body in a baby carrier or sling.

The Albuquerque Mother of Twins Club is a non-profit organization.

Free Amazon Prime 2-Day Shipping for College Students

Comments Off on Free Amazon Prime 2-Day Shipping for College Students

If you need your text books or anything else in a hurry, the Amazon Prime service includes free two-day shipping for speedy delivery, with no minimum order. The service usually costs $79 a year, but college students joining this free Amazon Student membership program get free Amazon Prime for six monthsStudents signing up for the program by October 15, 2013, are also entered into a drawing to win $30,000 in cash.

Other Amazon Student membership benefits include student discounts and news on offers, giveaways, and promotions especially for students. It’s free to sign up for Amazon Student with free Amazon Prime, you just need to verify that you’re a current student at a college or university by providing a .edu email address. Once that .edu address is verified, use any email you choose to manage your Amazon account.

The free Amazon Prime offer does not include movie streaming, nor the Kindle Owners Lending Library to borrow books. At the end of the free six months, members are switched to a discounted Amazon Prime membership costing $39 a year – which is still a saving on the regular $79 rate, and this does include video streaming and the Kindle library. If you don’t want to be automatically upgraded, make sure you select the “do not upgrade” option during your free six months.

See all the terms, details, and benefits of the free Amazon Prime Student deal, which you can also use to order products other than books – perhaps all the kitchen stuff or electronics you’ll need to kit out your new student digs. As long as they item is eligible for Amazon Prime shipping, you’re good to go.

Existing Amazon Prime members (who are students) can still register for Amazon Student, and get a refund on the remainder of their subscription.

I’d always encourage you to support your local independent bookstore such as Bookworks and Page One, or, of course, the University of New Mexico Bookstore if you study at UNM.  But if you buy online anyway, this is a great way to save on shipping costs, especially if you need your books in a rush because you’ve left your studying till the last minute (Tsk tsk! Yeah, I know, we’ve all done it…)

NOT A STUDENT AND WANT TO TRY FREE AMAZON PRIME?

Everyone else can still try Amazon Prime with a free one month trial. The free month trial includes unlimited instant video streaming of movies and TV shows.  Be sure to cancel your subscription before the free trial ends or select “do not upgrade” once you’re registered for the freebie, if you don’t want your credit card to be automatically charged for the annual $79 subscription at the end of the trial period.

Comments Off on Page One Customer Appreciation Day: April 27

Page One Bookstore  is throwing a Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday April 27 with hot dogs, cake, and a book deal. I believe this coincides with the bookstore’s anniversary too… I reckon they’re 32 years old in Albuquerque this year!

As a writer and avid reader I’m especially keen to support our independent bookstores, and this is a very good time to be supporting Page One… especially when you can save money too. They’ve just won Best of Burque for the bookstore category.

The Page One Customer Appreciation Day  on Saturday April 27,  2013, promises free hot dogs and cake from 12 noon to 6 pm, while supplies last. According to an email, they’re also offering a deal on books all day: Buy 3 books and you get one free.

At 3 pm, during the celebration party, author Christine Barber will be reading from and signing copies of her new book: When the Devil Doesn’t Show. Barber is a former recipient of the Tony Hillerman Prize for a mystery novel.

You can also print out this Page One $5 Off Coupon to save $5 on any $30 or more purchase, whether new or used.  It’s valid till April 30, so take it along if you’re going to the birthday party! For ABQ on the Cheap readers with a smart phone or other internet enabled doohickey, you don’t even have to print this coupon. Just show it on your “web capable mobile device” to get the $5 discount.

That gives you plenty of excuses to go and be appreciated!

Looking ahead, I also notice that May 4 offers a sale on all Star Wars items for fans of the Star Wars movies. (And who isn’t?) On May 4, Page One will give a 20% discount on all Star Wars merchandise, including the cookbooks, Lego sets, the Thrawn trilogy, and whatever other Star Wars themed stuff they have in stock.

Page One Bookstoreis located at 11018 Montgomery NE

Free eBook: Stuff About Money, Advice for Regular People

Comments Off on Free eBook: Stuff About Money, Advice for Regular People

Free money management and financial advice bookGet Craig Guillot’s book Stuff About Money: No BS Financial Advice for Regular People at the link as a free Kindle book (or read it on your computer) until April 12.

My journalist colleague Craig Guillot had the brilliant idea to write a practical book about money management that we ordinary people can understand (cut out the jargon!) with tips from financial professionals on everything from real estate and retirement to insurance and savings. The book offers quick and relatively easy-to-do ways to boost financial security, one step at a time.

Usually the book costs $14.99 for the print edition or $9.99 for the eBook, but you can get a free download of Stuff About Money: No BS Financial Advice for Regular People for Kindle now through Friday April 12, 2013. Or, if you don’t have a Kindle, downloaded it to your computer or other mobile device, using Amazon’s free app at the link.

The freebie offer is in celebration of Financial Literacy Month, and it’s for two days only, on April 11 and 12, 2013.

I’ve read this book and I have to say it’s very straight-talking, sensible, and realistic. It aims to give some peace of mind and confidence about managing your money for a healthy financial life. It includes a section on “Why you should track your net worth no matter how little it may be.” My net worth is probably in the region of $7.48, although if I count Mr. Cheap as an asset, it may rocket into the double digits.

Of course, some assets are priceless 😉
