We don’t have to wait till Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta to see the skies dotted with a fleet of balloons!

Love is in the air this weekend in anticipation of Valentine’s Day, with the Free Friends and Lovers Balloon Rally on the mornings of February 9 and 10, 2013. Well over 100 balloons will launch from Balloon Fiesta Park, and it’s free to roll up and watch, so take your sweetie or family to cuddle up to in the cool morning. Balloons launch around sunrise – 7 am. The balloon rally by local pilots is a Valentine’s tradition, organized by the Albuquerque Aerostat Ascension Association.

This weekend also sees the opening of a new exhibit at the Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum, to celebrate Albuquerque’s special relationship with hot air balloons and the history of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

‘We Fill The Sky With Dreams’ opens on February 9 and runs until March 30. If you’re going to the balloon rally on Sunday morning, you’d be smart to head over afterward to see this new exhibit, as Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum admission is free on Sunday from 9 am to 1 pm.

Cluster balloon event at the Balloon Museum and the Friends & Lovers Balloon Rally…If you missed our post last week, here’s a reminder of this Valentine’s weekend high jinks.

Balloon Museum Free Open House : February 13
The Adventures in Cluster Balloons free open house at the Albuquerque Balloon Museum celebrates the exhibition of Cluster Balloons: From Lawn Chairs to Cosmic Rays. Learn all about cluster balloons, ranging from those brave souls (I’m being generous here) who take to the skies in garden furniture, to the scientific uses of cluster balloons. The Balloon Museum Open House is free admission for all, from 11 am to 3 pm on Sunday February 13, 2011, and activities include:

  • The JP Aerospace PongSat program with guest John Powell, where visitors help with some kind of experiment that’s beyond me, but it involves a ping pong ball that goes up into space via balloon and rocket and then returns to Albuquerque. (I’ve been to some parties that felt like that.)
  • Live music from Cheap Shots and a performance of New Mexico’s bagpipe band Order of the Thistle, Pipes & Drums
  • A free screening of the film Searching for the Impossible: The Flying Project, about one man’s effort to fly a cluster balloon while playing a bagpipe. (What’s with all the bagpipes? Sounds a hoot!)
  • Cluster balloon demonstration
  • Help launch balloons with video cameras for aerial photography
  • Balloon animal sculptures and a crafts studio

Free Friends and Lovers Balloon Rally – February 12-13
Valentine’s weekend sees up to 100 balloons launching from Balloon Fiesta Park, and it’s free to roll up and watch. The rally by local pilots is a Valentine’s tradition, organized by the Albuquerque Aerostat Ascension Association. Drive in to Balloon Fiesta Park from the northeast corner off Balloon Fiesta Parkway, via I-25 south frontage road or San Mateo north of Alameda, and bring your sweetie or family to cuddle up to in the cool morning.  On Saturday, there’s also a band from 10 am – 1 pm and a potluck style tailgate party.  Balloons launch at 7 am.

50% Off Balloon Ride with Champagne Breakfast
This half price deal is available this weekend only, then use the voucher by February 7, 2012. We all know we’re the center of the known universe when it comes to hot air ballooning, but balloon rides are still rather pricey, even if they’re good value for the unique experience. It’s too easy to leave balloon rides to the tourists… so here’s a more affordable way to fly: Get a half price Rainbow Ryders balloon ride for $80.

The one hour ride includes continental breakfast, champagne toast and commemorative pin. It could make a good Valentine’s date if you buy for two! The deal is via Living Social through Sunday February 5, and then you’ve got a year to redeem it, excluding dates around Balloon Fiesta (Sept 25 – Oct 20, 2011) The regular price is $160. Rainbow Ryders is the official balloon ride operator for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, and they offer a winter balloon ride special offer starting at $125 through their own website, but this weekend’s deal trumps that, plus you have a longer (warmer) period to use it.

If you love hot air ballooning and October seems too far off to even contemplate, check out the best early-season balloon festival going: the St. Patrick’s Day Balloon Rallye in Los Lunas.

Celebrating its 25th year, this balloon fiestita boasts about 70 hot air balloons lifting off over two days (weather permitting), plus free music, arts and crafts fair, kids’ activities, and food booths. As if that weren’t enough, the Valencia Flying and Retrieval Society is collecting donations for the Valencia Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence. So, you can enjoy great family fun while supporting a worthy cause!

The 25th annual St. Patrick’s Day Balloon Rallye will be held Saturday and Sunday, March 14 and 15, beginning with sunrise mass ascensions each day at 7:00am. The events are held at Morris Field, Highway 314 & Morris Rd in Los Lunas.

Our recommended driving directions may add a few minutes to your trip, but the scenery is worth it: from Albuquerque, take I-25 south to the NM 47 exit (Isleta Resort & Casino). Take NM 47 across the pueblo (watch for cranes gleaning the fields in the early morning), through Bosque Farms and Peralta, and into Los Lunas. At the stoplight where NM 47 turns toward the south, continue straight ahead; you’ll be traveling west on NM 6 (Main Street). Follow NM 6 to its junction with NM 314. Turn south on NM 314 to Morris Road. Enjoy!

P.S. — We enthusiastically recommend breakfast at Henrietta’s Dining & Coffee Shop on Main Street. Watch for it on the north side of the street just east of NM 314.
