One Bird One Stone by author Sean Murphy, introduction by Natalie Goldberg

New Mexico writers Sean Murphy and Natalie Goldberg read at a free author event at Bookworks on May 21.

Sean Murphy (aka Mr Cheap!) will be reading and talking about the new edition of his book One Bird, One Stone: 108 Contemporary Zen Stories at Bookworks on Tuesday, May 21 at 7pm. The 2013 edition has a new introduction by Natalie Goldberg (the best-selling author of books including Writing Down the Bones, Wild Mind and the new book The True Secret of Writing) and Goldberg will be presenting at the event too.

Of course I’m biased as I’m married to author Sean Murphy, but I think that One Bird One Stone is one of his best books, full of beautiful Zen wisdom and moving stories, as well as Zen humor.

The book describes notable encounters between American Zen teachers and students, moments of insight and tons of quotable quotes. The book also covers the history of Zen in America and includes interviews with and stories about important figures like Philip Kapleau, Bernie Glassman, Gary Snyder, and Walter Nowick.

The Sean Murphy with Natalie Goldberg author reading and talk takes place:

  • When:   Tuesday May 21, 2013
  • Time:   7 pm
  • Where:  Bookworks, 4022 Rio Grande Blvd NW
  • Price: Free!

I’ll be there, so if you come along please find me and say Hi!

Natalie Goldberg True Secret of Writing: Albuquerque Author Event March 20

Comments Off on Natalie Goldberg True Secret of Writing: Albuquerque Author Event March 20

New Mexico writer Natalie Goldberg is in Albuquerque on March 20 as part of her new book tour.

Natalie Goldberg is the best-selling author of books including Writing Down the Bones and Wild Mind and her new book is called The True Secret of Writing. She’s a wonderful writer and writing teacher (I speak from experience) and a very witty and wise presenter. Any evening at a Goldberg event is bound to be entertaining and inspiring.

So, right on cue, here’s a free Natalie Goldberg event at Bookworks on Wednesday March 20, 2013,
at 7 pm. I imagine they’ll have a good turnout as she’s such a popular writer and speaker and I’d advise arriving early.

The new book describes Goldberg’s latest thoughts on the writing practice approach that she’s taught for many years in residential seminars in Taos, NM, and at workshops across the US and overseas.  I for one can’t wait to read it. It’s published on March 19, so this is pretty much the first chance to get to hear about it as part of Natalie Goldberg’s national book tour. She used to live in Albuquerque so I guess that’s why the tour kicks off here!

The Natalie Goldberg Albuquerque author reading and talk takes place:

  • When:   Wednesday March 20, 2013
  • Time:   7 pm
  • Where:  Bookworks, 4022 Rio Grande Blvd NW
  • Price: Free!

Hear the fabulous Sandra Cisneros, in a free event to celebrate Día de los Muertos – book your free tickets in advance or turn up on the door to try your luck at any remaining seats.

Sandra Cisneros is the author of The House On Mango Street, a book I loved and read again and again. Her new book, with artist Ester Hernández, is Have You Seen Marie?

See both Cisneros and Hernández at the Sandra Cisneros event on Friday November 2, 2012, at 7:30 pm in the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Bank of America Theatre, where they’ll read from and discuss their new book.

Although tickets are free, an email from the NHCC recommends booking tickets in advance, by 5 pm on November 1, then collect them from the Box Office between 6:30 and 7 pm on Friday. Any tickets unclaimed by 7 pm will be released to the public, so if you didn’t reserve yours, you can just try your luck on the night.

Comments Off on Native American Night Before Christmas: Free at KiMo

Santa Claus must deliver his fry bread! In case you missed the previous post about this free event at the KiMo Theatre on Sunday, here it is again! It sounds great if you have kids, or if you’re a kid at heart yourself, or if you just get all warm and fuzzy over Christmas stories, like I do. (Mr Cheap might disagree that I’m ever warm and fuzzy, so y’all don’t let on to him. It must stay our secret.)

Native American Night Before Christmas on Sunday November 27 at 2 pm at the KiMo Theatre is free to all, featuring the popular book of the same name by author Gary Robinson and the Cherokee artist/illustrator Jesse T. Hummingbird, plus a presentation of their brand new book:  Native American 12 Days of Christmas.

The event is a partnership with Bookworks and ABC Libraries, and the last I heard from Bookworks they weren’t sure if Gary Robinson could be there, but Jesse T. Hummingbird certainly will, possibly helped by his wife in presenting the two books. Of course, you can also buy the books and get them autographed in person – making it an extra special gift this holiday season!

Native American Night Before Christmas was the 2010 Silver Winner of the Moonbeam Children’s Book Award, and it gives a humorous re-spin on the traditional tale… but from a different tradition, as it stars Old Red Shirt (aka Santa Claus) and his flying white buffalo, taking to the skies on Christmas Eve.

Native American Night Before Christmas

  • When: Sunday November 27, 2011
  • Time: 2 – 4 pm
  • Where: The KiMo Theatre
  • Price: Admission is free!

The KiMo Theatre is located at 423 Central Avenue NW.

Comments Off on ABQ on the Cheap at Bookworks: April 17

Albuquerque on the Cheap’s Tania Casselle, that’s me, aka Mrs Cheap, SO looks forward to giving a
talk at Bookworks on Sunday April 17 at 3 pm.  And of course it’s free, natch!

Natalie Goldberg, best-selling author of books including Writing Down the Bones and Wild Mind will introduce me, and I’ll talk about my guidebook Insiders’ Guide to Albuquerque, and the fun, and often free or cheap stuff to do around town that’s featured in the book.

We’ll tuck into delicious free pastries donated by Flying Star Cafe, our Official Treats Sponsor for the event, and all round fab place to get a good value meal any time of the day.

As a writer for AOL Travel, Latitudes inflight magazine, and other regional and national media, I’ll also discuss travel writing in general, and ideas on how aspiring travel writers can get started without shelling out a fortune to travel to exotic places. We already live in an exotic place, right?

Although this isn’t an ABQ on the Cheap event as such, I hope lots of readers will turn up so I can meet you!

Many thanks to Flying Star Cafe for providing refreshments. I’m addicted to their Bhuddha Bowl, and I’ve also saved a bundle over the years using my Frequent Flyer card. You get a $5 reward voucher for every $50 you spend in Flying Star Cafe or Satellite Coffee. Also, through April, Flying Star’s Buy A Cookie, Save A Pet benefit gives $1 to Animal Humane New Mexico, when you buy a cookie with the Animal Humane Logo.

Comments Off on Chasing Chiles Free Author Event

This sounds like a hot event. Or maybe it’s a cool event? When chile peppers are involved, it’s always cool with us :-)

Agroecologist Kraig Kraft appears at Bookworks on March 6 in a free author event to talk about his new book Chasing Chiles: Hot Spots Along the Pepper Trail. The book follows a year’s journey by three chile-lovers exploring the rarest heirloom chile varieties, including the culture of chiles, effects of climate change, stories from farmers, and recipes.

Our own Dave DeWitt described it as “An instant classic of chile pepper lore, Chasing Chiles is the best social history of chiles since Amal Naj’s Peppers from 1992… fascinating science and entertaining humor.”

Kraig Kraft is also appearing at the Fiery Foods Show in Albuquerque this weekend – here’s our post about tickets for the 2011 Fiery Foods & Barbecue Show if you missed it earlier.

Chasing Chiles Free Author Event:

  • When: Sunday March 6, 2011
  • Time: 3 pm
  • Where: Bookworks

Life of Pi Author Yann Martel at the KiMo

Comments Off on Life of Pi Author Yann Martel at the KiMo

Wow – we have some top notch authors appearing in Albuquerque lately!

The latest literary hot shot in town is Canadian author Yann Martel, whose novel Life of Pi won the Mann Booker Award in 2002 and became an international bestseller. It’s a wonderful book, one of the most gripping and innovative stories I read last decade.

Yann Martel’s new novel is Beatrice and Virgil. It just came out in paperback and was described by USA Today as “Dark but divine…This novel might just be a masterpiece about the Holocaust…Everything comes into focus by the end, leaving the reader startled, astonished, and moved.”

Yann Martel appears at the KiMo Theatre on the evening of Thursday March 3, 2011.

Tickets cost $14, which includes an autographed copy of Beatrice and Virgil. The paperback alone costs $14, so I guess you can either look at it as buy the book and get a free ticket, or pay for your ticket and get a free book!

Yann Martel Author Event

  • When: Thursday March 3, 2011
  • Time: 7 pm
  • Where: KiMo Theatre
  • Admission: $14 including a signed copy of Yann Martel’s book Beatrice and Virgil

Buy tickets online from Bookworks, or in the store, or call (505) 344-8139, or buy tickets on the door assuming any remain on the night.

This event is a collaboration between Bookworks, ABC Libraries, Flying Star Cafe, and the KiMo Theatre. Jolly good job chaps. Which famous writer can we expect next? Shakespeare? That truly would be a miracle.

Bookworks is located at 4022 Rio Grande Blvd NW, and the KiMo Theatre at 423 Central Avenue NW.
