Man, we are seriously bummed to learn this event has been cancelled. Sorry, everyone!

Here’s your chance to sample some of the best chile samples around and to meet Jane Butel, the legendary southwestern chef!

On Saturday, October 17 (2009), from 9:00am – 6:00pm, High Desert United Methodist Church hosts the High Desert Chile Fiesta to benefit the mission and ministries of the church. The event has three components: a Chili Cook-Off, Food Vendors, and Arts & Crafts Market.

The Chili Cook-Off is sanctioned by the Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI). Your $5 (adult) entry fee includes tickets to sample the cook-off recipes. You can taste the red chili, green chile stew, and “creative use of green chile” entries. Then see who takes home the trophy!

Beyond the chili cook-off, you can wander the grounds to sample food from vendors, browse terrific handmade arts & crafts items, and meet Jane Butel, who will be presenting free cooking demonstrations and signing copies of her cookbooks.

Did we mention kids under 12 admitted free with parents? This should be a great, family friendly, and CHEAP event!

The event will be held (we believe) at Haines Park in Rio Rancho. We’ll confirm that and remind you about this fun event a few days beforehand.

We’re giving you advance notice on this one, in case you want to enter the competition!

Entries are due by September 25, 2009, and entry fees range from $25-$35 per category. Prizes range from $50 to $200 per category, plus trophy. (Find the entry form at the PDF linked earlier.)

Food Vendors are encouraged to register early for best access to electrical support. Arts & Crafts vendors may register at any time. For both groups, booth fees start at $200 for a 12×12 space.

For spectators, the event should be a lot of fun! Besides the cook-off and arts and crafts fair, legendary southwestern cook Jane Butel will be there to present free cooking demonstrations and sign copies of her cookbooks. A $5 adult admission fee includes tickets to sample the cook-off chilis. Kids under 12 admitted free with parents.

The event will be held (we believe) at Haines Park in Rio Rancho. We’ll confirm that and remind you about this fun event a few days beforehand.

What better gift for Mom than a piece of original artwork? If you think you can’t afford it, read on!

VSA of New Mexico is holding a Mother’s Day Arts & Crafts Festival on Saturday, May 2 (2009), from 10:00am – 3:00pm. FREE admission! You’ll find all kinds of affordable, handmade art work for Mom (or anyone else) in media such as painting, prints, crafts, and even papier mache. There’s sure to be something to please everyone, and proceeds directly benefit the artists.

VSA (“Very Special Arts”) provides art education and exhibition opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities. The organization also performs community outreach programs and offers arts programs for children with autism and people with mental health concerns.

By the way, VSA’s Arts & Crafts Festival is being held in conjunction with the opening of their latest exhibition, “Moving in from the Margins: Works by VSA Exploratory Arts Program,” featuring “lyrical abstract works on paper,” which is opening with a free reception Friday, May 1, 5:00 – 7:00pm. As of this writing, we can’t find anything about this exhibition on VSA’s website yet, but here’s a link to past exhibitions, to give you an idea of the fantastic, high-quality artwork you’ll find there.

We would say “get out to these events for the benefit of the artists,” but we really believe you’re the one who will come away enriched.

Both events will be held at VSA North Fourth Art Center, 4904 Fourth St NW, Albuquerque.
