Comments Off on $1 Off Admission to Rio Grande Arts & Crafts Festival Spring Show

The Rio Grande Arts & Crafts Festival spring show is coming up this weekend but don’t pay the full admission price… get $1 off using the coupon.

The Rio Grande Arts and Crafts Festival will be springing out at EXPO New Mexico from March 7 – 9, 2014.  Around 200 artists and craftspeople from all over the country display their work, give demonstrations, and, of course, sell their arts and crafts. All kinds of creative arts are represented, from glassmaking and painting to pottery and jewelry… and much more.

Kids can enjoy creating their own work of art at the Kids’ Creation Station, and naturally there will be food vendors to feed you everything from fajitas to gyros, plus specialty food items to buy from the culinary booths – and plenty of free samples! The festival also includes live entertainment, although at time of writing their website doesn’t give the entertainment schedule yet. Hmm, that’s strange, they usually have the line-up in place by now. But previous performers have included Syd Masters and the Swing Riders and Mariachi Fiesta Internacional, so expect some good grooves whoever is on the roster this year.

Regular adult admission is $7 or you can get a 3-day pass for $9, but save a buck by printing out the Festival’s $1 off admission coupon valid on either a one day ticket or the festival pass. Plus it’s free admission for kids aged under twelve.

If you use the $1 discount coupon, it’s good for one admission or pass only, so you need a coupon for each adult going to the show.

  • When: Friday March 7 through Sunday March 9, 2014
  • Times: 10 am – 5 pm

The Rio Grande Arts & Crafts Festival takes place at the EXPO New Mexico Manuel Lujan building. Be prepared to pay $5 for parking at the fairgrounds.

The free Albuquerque Artscrawl has been running for years of course, but new visitors in town for Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta might not know about it, and this one is perfectly timed for Fiesta-visitors this Friday evening October 5, starting at 5 pm.

During the Artscrawls galleries stay open later than usual to host exhibit openings, receptions, and demonstrations, and you can take yourself along to just one or do an arts-fest crawl of several of the events on the trail.  On the First Friday of the month the crawl includes galleries throughout Albuquerque, while the Third Friday of the month crawls focus on a specific district.

The First Friday Artscrawl on October 5 has a line-up of 24 galleries throughout the city. You can find the full list of participating galleries, their locations, and the hours for each event at the link, but a few tasters include:

  • Gallerie Imaginarium Downtown holds an artist reception for Elana Schwartz and her carved linden wood sculptures (5-7pm at 301D Central Avenue NW, entrance on 3rd Street)
  • High Desert Art & Frame in the NE Heights has a reception for Voluntary Simplicity by acrylics artist Jackie Bregman (5-8pm at 12611 Montgomery Boulevard NE)

Comments Off on Free Art Workshops: Retablo, Sugar Skull, Mask

Artists and creative types can attend these workshops for free, but spaces are limited, so reserve in advance.

The South Broadway Cultural Center is holding more free workshops for artists. One is a Retablo Artist Workshop to learn how to create this traditional art form over three hours on September 8. Another, in good time to celebrate the Day of the Dead, is a Sugar Skull Workshop to make and decorate your own sugar skull folk art on October 17. We  mentioned last month the Mask-Making Workshop on September 12 – 13 but here’s a reminder in case they have any spaces left. The class is spread over two days (3 hours a day) and teaches the fundamentals of mask-making, plus you take away the mask you make.

All classes only have space for 30 students, so book the free art workshops in advance.

Contact the South Broadway Cultural Center to register or get more info on their arts workshops: (505) 848-1320

Happy Arte Hour

Comments Off on Happy Arte Hour

Happy Arte Hour is a free event for adults at the NHCC, and it’s a chance to get your creative groove on…  The next ones are on May 3 and June 7, 2012.

The National Hispanic Cultural Center Happy Arte Hour features Albuquerque artists teaching some of the basics in their art form, with a chance to socialize and get to know your creative neighbors over chips and salsa – there’s also a cash bar available on these Thursday evenings.

The events are for adults, and it’s free to join in, although donations are welcome to help keep the program going and pay the artists.  Also let the organizers know you’re going so they can make sure to provide enough materials for you.

Upcoming session are:

Thursday May 3: Papel Picado Happe Arte Hour with Catalina Delgado Trunk from 5:30 – 7:30 pm, learning about the basics of papel picado, or cut paper, using patterns. I always love seeing Catalina Delgado Trunk’s art at various events around town – her work is so intricate and beautiful. I’m sure my own paper-cutting technique would look like a rabid mouse had been gnawing at it.

Thursday June 7: Playful Clay Creations with Micaela Seidel. Go hands-on with clay from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.

Let them know you’re going by emailing Erica Garcia so they can plan the space and supplies needed. Happe Arte Hour is held at the NHCC’s Domenici Education Building.

The National Hispanic Cultural Center is located at 1701 4th Street SW, Albuquerque.

Figure Drawing Sessions with Model

Comments Off on Figure Drawing Sessions with Model

This looks like a good deal for artists of all levels: A weekly drawing session with a live model, and discounts with a punch card.

The Harwood Art Center holds an open drawing session each week with a model. It’s not a class as such as there is no instruction, but you can drop in to the moderated sessions without advance registration. The model moves through various poses so artists can capture the figure in motion, leading to longer still poses. The drawing sessions are open to artists of all levels (although they don’t allow photography) and you take your own art supplies. They provide an easel for your use and, of course, the model.

The Harwood Art Center Open Drawing Sessions run on Tuesdays from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm in the Harwood Art Studio.

Single drop-in sessions are $10, but if you buy a punch card for five sessions, the price is $35. That’s $7 an evening.

Pretty good value, huh? I’d have to pay Mr Cheap a lot more than that to get him to stand still for just five minutes, even assuming I wanted to draw him, fine figure of a man that he is.

The drawing sessions are held at the Harwood Art Studio 1029 6th Street NW,  on the corner of 6th and Mountain.
