Comments Off on $1 Off Admission to Rio Grande Arts & Crafts Festival Spring Show

The Rio Grande Arts & Crafts Festival spring show is coming up this weekend but don’t pay the full admission price… get $1 off using the coupon.

The Rio Grande Arts and Crafts Festival will be springing out at EXPO New Mexico from March 7 – 9, 2014.  Around 200 artists and craftspeople from all over the country display their work, give demonstrations, and, of course, sell their arts and crafts. All kinds of creative arts are represented, from glassmaking and painting to pottery and jewelry… and much more.

Kids can enjoy creating their own work of art at the Kids’ Creation Station, and naturally there will be food vendors to feed you everything from fajitas to gyros, plus specialty food items to buy from the culinary booths – and plenty of free samples! The festival also includes live entertainment, although at time of writing their website doesn’t give the entertainment schedule yet. Hmm, that’s strange, they usually have the line-up in place by now. But previous performers have included Syd Masters and the Swing Riders and Mariachi Fiesta Internacional, so expect some good grooves whoever is on the roster this year.

Regular adult admission is $7 or you can get a 3-day pass for $9, but save a buck by printing out the Festival’s $1 off admission coupon valid on either a one day ticket or the festival pass. Plus it’s free admission for kids aged under twelve.

If you use the $1 discount coupon, it’s good for one admission or pass only, so you need a coupon for each adult going to the show.

  • When: Friday March 7 through Sunday March 9, 2014
  • Times: 10 am – 5 pm

The Rio Grande Arts & Crafts Festival takes place at the EXPO New Mexico Manuel Lujan building. Be prepared to pay $5 for parking at the fairgrounds.

  • Sunday April 28 features storyteller Rachel Carson, kids’ activities, live music, a workshop on papermaking, games and prizes, a raffle, plus info from City of Albuquerque Solid Waste Department folk who’ll be there to answer your questions about recycling in Albuquerque.

Native Heritage Art Market on Thanksgiving Weekend

Comments Off on Native Heritage Art Market on Thanksgiving Weekend

The first Native Heritage Art Market debuts this Thanksgiving weekend in Albuquerque, and what a debut!

The Native Heritage Art Market runs from November 25-27 at Hotel Albuquerque, and admission is free for all. In addition to work for sale from more than 15 different tribes, such as jewelry, pottery, carvings, paintings and sculpture, the event also includes artist demonstrations, and traditional music and cultural performances.

The Opening Reception at 5 pm on Friday November 25 look well worth a visit, as it pays tribute to Indian Arts and Crafts Association Artists of the Year over the last 30 years, many of whom will be present. Ceremonies start with an invocation by Haywood Big Day, Sundance Leader for the Crow Tribe, and the whole event is MC’d by the wonderful Harlan McKosato, host of Native America Calling. How cool is that?
I often listen to Native America Calling on KUNM, and I LOVE it!

Other highlights over the weekend include:

  • Turquoise Workshop at 10 am on November 26 by Joe P. Lowry, owner of the Turquoise Museum
  • Jerry Pardilla, Penobscot singer & flute player, at 12 noon on November 26
  • Plus talks/demonstrations on Navajo silver jewelry and sandpainting, Laguna Pueblo pottery, Zuni Pueblo weaving, Taos Pueblo pottery, Santo Domingo Pueblo Heishi-making, Hopi basket weaving, and more…

See the full Native Heritage Art Market schedule for details on what’s happening when. I’m not sure how you’re supposed to pick your fave time to go, though. It all looks pretty great to me. And to get us in the festive spirit, they’ll have a tree with Native-made holiday ornaments.

As the event is organized by the Indian Arts and Crafts Association we can be confident that the arts for sale are all certified as genuine work from American Indian artists.

Native Heritage Art Market takes place:

  • When: November 25-27, 2011
  • Times:
Friday November 25 from 3 – 7 pm, with the opening reception at 5 pm
    Saturday November 26 from 10 am – 5 pm
    Sunday November 27 from 10 am – 2 pm
  • Where: Hotel Albuquerque
  • Price: Admission is free!

I can’t be responsible for how much you spend on holiday shopping, though!

Hotel Albuquerque is located just north of Old Town at 800 Rio Grande Boulevard NW.
