Albuquerque BioPark is now offering a discount to active and non-active military personnel visiting the BioPark Zoo, Aquarium, and Botanic Garden. Nice one! That’s a very good move to thank our service men and women.

As of this week (January 4, 2012 to be exact), the new ABQ BioPark military discount gives $2 off adult admission and $1 off children’s admission. The discount is valid for active and non-active personnel, although you do of course need to show your military ID, and the discount is for general admission, not for any special events.

Albuquerque BioPark regular admission is $7 for adults, $3 for seniors 65+, $3 for kids aged 3-12, and ages 2 and under go free. That’s for entry into either the Zoo, or the Aquarium and Botanic Garden.

A combo ticket for all BioPark locations is only available on Tuesday to Sunday mornings from 9 am to noon, at $12 for adults, $5 for kids, including train rides.

Albuquerque Aquarium Sleep with the Sharks

Comments Off on Albuquerque Aquarium Sleep with the Sharks

ABQ BioPark Aquarium overnight events always sound great to me, although I’ve spent more time trying to avoid sharks than cozy up for the night with them.

The ABQ BioPark Aquarium sleepovers for all the family include activities such as games and crafts with supplies provided, and everyone visits the touchpool and can watch sea-themed movies in the theater. They also tell you all about the underwater critters and their night-time habits.

The next Aquarium Overnight is on January 20 , 2012.

The noctural adventure isn’t dirt cheap, but at $30 per person I think it’s a pretty good deal for such an unusual experience, and makes a great treat for kids – maybe for a birthday or other celebration. (And hey, it’s educational!)

Events start at 7 pm on the Friday night, and finish at 8 am on the Saturday morning – just in time to go get fish tacos or lox and bagels for breakfast :-)

Registrations must be made well in advance as space is naturally limited – which is why we’re reminding you now so you can book in good time. An adult has to attend the sleepover with any children aged under 18. (Yeah, I know. You were just thinking about your next date night or wedding anniversary celebration and thinking “Geeze, 30 bucks overnight is cheaper than a baby-sitter!” Sorry, it doesn’t work like that.)

The next ABQ BioPark Aquarium sleepovers for the new year are:

  • January 20 – 21, 2012
  • February 17 – 18, 2012
  • March 16 – 17, 2012

For all the details and to book a space call (505) 848-7180.

And let’s hope the sharks don’t snore…

Albuquerque BioPark Aquarium is located at 2601 Central Avenue NW.

ABQ Aquarium and Botanic Garden Birthday Perks

Comments Off on ABQ Aquarium and Botanic Garden Birthday Perks

ABQ BioPark Aquarium and Botanic Garden celebrates its 15th birthday this month with some special offers through December 23, 2011.

Happy birthday to the Aquarium and Botanic Garden! It’s always tough having a December birthday isn’t it? A friend was born on December 25 and although it makes her feel rather special to share that day (I won’t say it gives her delusions of grandeur) it also means people can overlook the pressies.  ABQ BioPark is turning the whole birthday gift thing on its head by giving US gifts instead.

The Aquarium and Botanic Garden birthday celebrations  run through December 23 with:

  • Free admission to anyone born on the 15th of any month. This excludes the River of Light, but you get free admission during regular day hours to the Aquarium and Botanic Garden. Take ID to prove your date of birth.
  • 15% discount for everyone on select items in the Aquarium Gift Shop, plus some giveaways.
  • 15% off certain dishes at breakfast and lunch in the Shark Reef Café.
  • Plus, the 15th person who visits the Aquarium and Botanic Garden each day receives a pair of free tickets to the River of Lights.

I have a vivid image of how this might play out, with everyone arriving early and playing argy-bargy in the line to be 15th… although not everyone will know about the offer, but YOU will, won’t you? Because you’re smart enough to read Albuquerque on the Cheap!

These birthday perks continue through December 23, 2011.

If you’re a visitor, Albuquerque BioPark Aquarium and Botanic Garden is located at 2601 Central Avenue NW.

Daizy the Elephant Birthday Party

Comments Off on Daizy the Elephant Birthday Party

ABQ BioPark Zoo celebrates Daizy’s birthday, and we’d better hope she’s not got a dose of the Terrible Twos when she goes hunting for her present!

I can’t quite believe it’s Daizy the elephant’s second birthday already, but it is, so here’s how to celebrate with her.

ABQ BioPark Zoo holds the Daizy the Elephant birthay party on Saturday August 27, 2011, and you can find out all about these rare Asian elephants too, and how they are being protected.  The event runs from 10 am to 2 pm, and activities are included with zoo admission.

My favorite part of the schedule is at noon, when Daizy goes hunting for her presents. If she’s anything like me when I’m rooting out my gifts, nothing will stand in her way.  But she’s probably more lady-like, which wouldn’t be hard. Either way, it should be fun to watch. There are also discovery stations and challenges for kids.

The day’s events include:

  • 10 am: Open House at the new elephant bull barn, home to Albert and Samson
  • 10:30 am: Questions and answers with the zookeeper
  • 11 am:  Demonstration of martial arts by humans, followed by martial art skills by the elephants Albert and Samson (mind boggles)
  • 12 noon: Daizy plays hide and go seek for her presents
  • 12:30 pm:  Yoga demonstration – presumably NOT including the elephants. I guess it’s the Asian theme.
  • 1:15 pm:  Singing happy birthay to Daizy when she’s given her cake
  • 1:30 pm:  More questions and answers with the zookeeper.

The Daizy birthday event and elephant conservation day  activities are included with ABQ BioPark Zoo regular admission: $7 for adults, $3 for seniors 65+, $3 for kids aged 3-12, ages 2 and under go free.

ABQ BioPark Zoo (formerly the Rio Grande Zoo) is located at 903 10th Street SW.

ABQ BioPark Valentine Tours

February 8, 2011 by

Comments Off on ABQ BioPark Valentine Tours

ABQ BioPark Valentines DayLet the love fest begin with Love Bugs and Birds and the Beasts tours for ages 18+ only. Reservations are needed for you and your date!

They’re clever people over at the Albuquerque BioPark, thinking up these two Valentine tours for adults only. Both take place on Saturday, February 12, 2011, and both are at 2 pm, so you have to pick one or the other for your wild affair.  Tickets are $10 including admission to the Zoo or the Botanic Gardens.

The tours are only for ages 18+ and you need to book in advance at (505) 764-6214.

  • Birds and the Beasts at the Zoo: a tour to explore the romantic life and exotic mating habits of condors, cranes, primates and reptiles, led by a zoo expert who’ll fill you in the animals’ romantic rituals.
  • Love Bugs at the Botanic Garden: Entomologist Dr. Ralph Charlton takes you behind the scenes at the Bugarium Rearing Laboratory, explaining how insects and arachnids reproduce, and the dramatic love life of all kinds of critters I’d frankly rather avoid. But then love is strange, isn’t it?

For families and kids, the BioPark offers family-friendly Valentines Day activities on Saturday February 12 from 10 am – 2 pm, with educational discovery stations explaining how the zoo matchmakes endangered species, which fish at the Aquarium serenade with love songs, and more. It’s all in with the regular BioPark admission: $7 for adults, $3 for seniors 65+, $3 for kids aged 3-12, ages 2 and under go free.

If you go, the Shark Reef Cafe at the Aquarium is also putting on a special Valentine’s Day brunch on February 12 and 13, at a fixed price of $21.95 per person.

Comments Off on TWO MONTHS’ FREE ADMISSION TO BIOPARK

If you enjoy taking your family to Albuquerque’s Biological Park attractions (the Rio Grande Zoo, Albuquerque Aquarium, and Rio Grande Botanic Garden), you can’t beat this deal.

If you join the New Mexico BioPark Society before April 30, 2009, you get two extra months of membership free! Membership already is a great bargain. With several packages available you can pick the one that’s right for you. Here’s just one example.

A Family membership for 2 adults and up to 4 children (or 3 adults and 2 children) costs $79 per year and gets you:

  • Free admission to the Albuquerque Aquarium, Rio Grande Zoo, and Rio Grande Botanic Garden as often as you’d like throughout the year
  • Half-price admission to the ZooMusic and Summer Nights concert series
  • Free or discounted admission to more than 150 U.S. zoos, aquariums, and botanic gardens
  • Free admission to ZooBoo, Father’s Day Fiesta at the Zoo, and the annual Mother’s Day Symphony Concert
  • Discounts in all BioPark gift shops
  • Discounts on BioPark education classes
  • Discounts on BioPark special events
  • Subscription to BioScape magazine
  • Invitations to the annual members-only party and exclusive members-only previews and events

That’s a lot of stuff for just $79 per year, considering a single trip to the combined BioPark attractions would normally cost a family of four around $40 at the regular admission price. Other BioPark Society memberships range in price from $49 to $299.

Like we said, if you sign up before April 30, you’ll get 2 additional months of membership free. And if you sign up before May 31, you’ll receive a one-time-use guest pass.

View the various membership tiers, and then sign up online. Use the code ASU to get the freebies!

You also can join by calling 764-6280, or in person at any BioPark attraction.

The Albuquerque BioPark attractions all are located in the vicinity of 2601 Central Ave NW, near downtown Albuquerque.
