The Albuquerque BioPark military discount gives a price break to active and non-active military personnel visiting the BioPark Zoo, Aquarium, and Botanic Garden. That’s a very good move to thank our service men and women.

The ABQ BioPark military discount on tickets was introduced during 2012, and it gives $2 off adult admission and $1 off children’s admission. The discount is valid for active and non-active personnel, although you do of course need to show your military ID.  The ABQ BioPark military discount is only for general admission, not for any special events such as the concerts at the zoo.

Albuquerque BioPark regular admission for entry into either the Zoo, or the Aquarium and Botanic Garden is:

  • New Mexico residents: $9 for adults, $4.50 for seniors 65+, $4 for kids aged 3-12, and ages 2 and under go free.  Take your New Mexico ID to get the local admission rate.
  • Visitors who are not New Mexico residents: $12.50 for adults, $5.50 for seniors 65+, $4 for kids aged 3-12. And hey, they don’t discriminate against non-New Mexican kiddies. Tots ages 2 and under still go free.

A combo ticket for all BioPark locations is only available on Tuesday to Sunday mornings from 9 am to noon. That’s because if you don’t buy the combo ticket early in the day, you won’t have time to trip round all the BioPark venues anyway. The combo tickets include the fun mini-train rides between the locations.

For New Mexico residents the combo cost is $15 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $6 for kids. For out-of-state visitors, the combo cost is $20 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $6 for kids.

The BioPark’s Tingley Beach is always free for everyone, at 1800 Tingley Dr SW.

Albuquerque BioPark Zoo (formerly the Rio Grande Zoo) is located at 903 10th St. SW.  Albuquerque BioPark Aquarium and Botanic Garden is located at 2601 Central Avenue NW.

We’ve just had word that admission to the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo will be free to visitors on June 30, 2014.

The ABQ BioPark Zoo will be free to enter on Monday June 30 from 9 am to 5 pm. The Zoo Open House is for the final public information session of the master planning process for the ABQ BioPark.

You’ll be able to see a display of plans and ideas all day in the gazebo just inside the zoo’s main entrance. You’ll also be able to chat with the folks from the planning team and ask any questions between 11 am and 1 pm.  Everyone is encouraged to go to the zoo, see the new ideas, and give your input on the master plan.

Note that the BioPark Aquarium and Botanic Garden is NOT part of the free admission offer. You’ll still have to pay regular admission to those facilities on Monday.

Comments Off on Free Zoo Entry With Free Summer Fun Roadshow

Here’s a fun free morning at the Zoo courtesy of the free summer fun roadshow from our friends Jackie, Tony & Donnie in the Morning at 100.3 The Peak.

You can get free admission to the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo on Thursday July 3, 2014, between
6 am
and 10 am, for the Free Summer Fun Roadshow by Jackie, Tony & Donnie of 100.3 The Peak.

Jackie, Tony & Donnie will be broadcasting live from a tent at the Zoo, and talking with the zookeepers about their animals.

The ABQ BioPark Zoo is firm about the timing in their free summer fun roadshow event details, and if you turn up later you’ll have to pay regular admission. So get there early and allow time to park as it’ll probably be busy.

It’s a great way to get into the zoo for free, and we all know that Jackie, Tony and Donnie are just a super-fun bunch to hang out with.  At the zoo entrance, 100.3 The Peak will be collecting donations to the Roadrunner Food Bank to help feed children in New Mexico. Although zoo admission is free, visitors are asked to take a donation of canned goods or non-perishables.

Albuquerque Zoo Boo

Albuquerque BioPark celebrates Halloween with the annual Albuquerque Zoo Boo on October 26, 2013, and kids get free admission!

The 25th annual Albuquerque Zoo Boo haunts the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo on Saturday October 26, from 11 am to 4 pm. Four costumed children get free admission to the event with a paying adult, and adult admission is $9 for New Mexico residents with ID. (Adult admission is $12.50 for non-residents.)

If you want to do the math another way, if one New Mexico resident grown-up takes four not-yet-grown-ups, you all enjoy Zoo Boo for less than $2 per person!  ABQ BioPark defines a child as aged 3-12 for its regular tickets. Make sure the small humans go in costume though! (As if you could stop them.)

Expect to spook it up at the Albuquerque Zoo Boo with:

  • Games and Haunted Habitats
  • Trick-or-treating with candy from local sponsors
  • Backyard Boo for tiny tots
  • A costume parade and judging for children aged 12 and under. There are three different contests at various times. Baby Boo & Cutest is at 11:30 am, then Best Boy Costume & Best Girl Costume at 1:30 pm, followed by Scariest & Funniest at 3:30 pm.
  • A screaming contest with the first round starting at 12:30 pm. Boy, I should enter that. Especially if they have any of those creepy-crawlies on the loose at the zoo!
  • A Jack-o-lanterns display from the BioPark’s staff pumpkin carving contest.
  • Entertainment from KISS-FM.

Halloween is such a special occasion for kids and the Albuquerque Zoo Boo at the ABQ BioPark provides a fun alternative to trick-or-treating.  Zoo Boo has been the zoo’s busiest day of the year in past years, and it gives the parents a price break! It’s great that the event is celebrating its quarter century.

A free Park and ride will be available from the Aquarium and Botanic Garden parking lot from 10 am – 5 pm.

New Mexico BioPark Society members get free admission (as they always do to all ABQ BioPark facilities).

Go scare yourself at Albuquerque Zoo Boo:

  • When: Saturday, October 26, 2013
  • Time: 11 am – 4 pm
  • Where: ABQ BioPark Zoo
  • Admission: 4 costumed children get free admission with a paying adult.

Daizy the Elephant Birthday Party

Daizy the elephant

ABQ BioPark Zoo celebrates Daizy the elephant’s birthday, and I can’t quite believe it’s her fourth birthday already. She’s growing up so fast she’ll be off to college soon. But indeed it is her birthday, so here’s how to celebrate with her…

ABQ BioPark Zoo holds the Daizy the Elephant birthday party on Saturday August 24, 2013, and you can find out all about these rare Asian elephants and how they are being protected.  The event runs from 10 am to 2 pm, and activities are included with zoo admission.

Expect Q&A with the elephant keeper, training demonstrations, and live music from The Anslovers. The elephants will also hunt for birthday treats and devour the fruit and hay birthday cakes. (It’s an entertaining sight.) Subway restaurants will provide the cakes for the elephants and also serve up cookies for the rest of us.

I went to Daizy the elephant’s birthday party last year and loved every minute of it. The memory of dancing elephants and Rozie (Daizy’s mom) playing Wild Thing on a guitar will stay with me always.

I doubt Rozie will be strumming the guitar this year as she is pregnant and probably can’t play the rock chick. That means Daizy the elephant is expecting a new sibling any time soon. Rozie is pregnant via artificial insemination from zoo-mate elephant Samson and blood tests suggest the new baby could be a girl.  No guarantees on the gender, but start thinking about girl elephant names in case the ABQ BioPark asks for suggestions! The calf is due any time between now and November, although zoo keepers have a hunch that the calf may come in mid-September.

Crikey, it’s more exciting than the baby watch for Princess Kate and Prince William, although the princess had a much shorter  gestation period. (Kate will be grateful for that!)

The Daizy the elephant birthday event and elephant conservation day activities on August 24 are included with ABQ BioPark Zoo regular admission:

  • New Mexico residents: $9 for adults, $4.50 for seniors 65+, $4 for kids aged 3-12, and ages 2 and under go free.  Take your New Mexico ID to get the locals’ admission rate.
  • Visitors who are not New Mexico residents: $12.50 for adults, $5.50 for seniors 65+, $4 for kids aged 3-12. Tots ages 2 and under still go free.
  • Military personnel (active and non-active) get $2 off adult admission and $1 off children’s admission, with your military ID.

ABQ BioPark Valentine Tours

February 6, 2013 by

Comments Off on ABQ BioPark Valentine Tours

They’re clever people over at the Albuquerque BioPark, thinking up these three Valentine tours for adults only. Let the love fest begin with Love Bugs, Birds and the Beasts, and That’s A Moray tours for ages 18+ only.

All tours take place on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at various times. Tickets are $5 on top of the regular BioPark admission. Remember to take your New Mexico ID, as NM residents get a discount. You’ll pay $9 for regular admission or $15 for a combo ticket if you want to attend tours at more than one BioPark venue. Non-residents pay $12.50, or $20 for a combo ticket.

The ABQ BioPark Valentine tours are only for ages 18+ and reservations are required either online at the link or call (505) 848-7180.  They’re open to couples (of course) but also to singles, if you are interested in the love affairs of critters. Or maybe you’ll find a love affair of your own while you’re there, with another single on the tour…

  • That’s A Moray at the Aquarium at 10 am:  Clever pun, although I had to read it several times before I got the joke… try saying it out loud! The Aquarium’s Curator of Fishes shows what you’re missing underwater, with fish singing love songs, transgendered critters, and how male seahorses become pregnant. (I bet they make more fuss about it than females of any species do.)
  • Love Bugs at the Botanic Garden at noon: Entomologist Dr. Ralph Charlton takes you behind the scenes to explain how insects and arachnids reproduce, and the dramatic love life of all kinds of crawlies I’d frankly rather avoid. But then love is strange, isn’t it?
  • Birds and the Beasts at the Zoo at 2 pm: a tour with a zoo expert to explore the romantic life and exotic mating habits of condors, cranes, lions and frogs. (Note to singles: If a frog asks you to kiss it, promising to turn into a gorgeous  prince or princess, don’t pucker up. The fact that you’ve found a talking frog is miracle enough. )

The price to join the Valentine tours this year is a bit higher than last year. But hey, Valentine’s Day comes only once a year. Thank heavens.

Daizy the Elephant Birthday Party

ABQ BioPark Zoo celebrates Daizy the elephant’s birthday, and I can’t quite believe it’s her third birthday already. She’s growing up so fast she’ll be off to college soon. But indeed it is her birthday, so here’s how to celebrate with her…

ABQ BioPark Zoo holds the Daizy the Elephant birthday party on Saturday August 25, 2012, and you can find out all about these rare Asian elephants too, and how they are being protected.  The event runs from 10 am to 2 pm, and activities are included with zoo admission.

There seems to be a lot of singing and dancing going on, by the elephants as well as by the humans. I’m tempted to go to the zoo just to witness that spectacle.  They’re also holding a Public Art Scavenger Hunt in the zoo on Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm.

The day’s events include:

  • 10 am: Kick off with storytime, discovery stations and Girl Scout Daizy patch challenges.
  • 10:30 am: Questions and answers with the zookeeper.
  • 11 am:  Dancing by the elephants Albert and Samson (I’m guessing it’s not tap dancing. Could be ballet…)
  • 11:30 am: Yoga demonstration. By elephants? By humans? Who knows? Should be fun.  I guess it’s the Asian theme.
  • 12:30 pm:  Questions and answers with the zookeeper.
  • 1 pm: Now this is sweet! Daizy’s mother and grandma, Rozie and Alice, will sing a duet.
  • 1:30 pm:  Everyone sings happy birthay to Daizy when she’s given her cake.

The Daizy birthday event and elephant conservation day  activities on August 25 are included with ABQ BioPark Zoo regular admission: $7 for adults, $3 for seniors 65+, $3 for kids aged 3-12, ages 2 and under go free. Military (active and non-active) get $2 off adult admission and $1 off children’s admission, with your military ID.
