Viva Women and Creativity!  There’s a bunch of great free and cheap stuff going on throughout March as part of the Women & Creativity 2013 event organized by the National Hispanic Cultural Center and the Harwood Art Center.

Albuquerque Women & Creativity 2013 events run until March 31, and are held in various locations. Some require advance reservations or have maximum attendance numbers. Highlights include:

  • Free Opening Reception with live music to kick off the month’s celebrations, on Friday March 1 from 6 – 8 pm at Harwood Art Center, 1114 7th Street NW.
  • Yoga Trip: Journey With the Heart on March 2 and March 30, both at 8:30 am. A morning yoga workshop to balance your chakras and connect to your creative intentions. By donation ($3 – $10 suggested) at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.
  • Free Sing-Along Classes on Tuesdays in March from 6:30 pm – 8 pm. Cantando La Cultura is led by New Mexico musicians to teach the history and music of traditional New Mexican and Latin American songs. At the National Hispanic Cultural Center on Tuesdays March 5, 12, 19, and 26.
  • Happy Arte Hour on March 7, making small wood collage vignettes in this free workshop for adults from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Although it’s free, they encourage donations and reservations, and you’ll be able to refresh yourself at the cash bar with tapas for sale!
  • Free Films on Fridays at noon, at UNM Women’s Resource Center, screening films made by and about women and girls, on March 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.
  • Tin Collage Workshop on March 18 from 5:30 – 7 pm, including a short lecture on upcycled art, then make your own recycled art with supplies provided. Register in advance as they have a limit of 20 people, at Harwood Art Center.
  • Four Poets Respond on March 16 at 7 pm, featuring Jasmine Cuffee, Valerie Martínez, Shelle Sánchez, and my talented friend Jamie Figueroa in a performance of Four Poets, Two Rivers, One Water. The event (by donation) is at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.
  • You can also join in from home with Play Along projects. Sign up for Write & Share by February 28, for the decorated trading card exchange by March 15 (they provide the cards), or join the resolution to commit ten acts of creativity in March. Come on – get inspired!

This is just a tiny sampling of all the events, performances, and exhibitions.

Curves Free Week Guest Pass: Limited Time

Comments Off on Curves Free Week Guest Pass: Limited Time

Get a Curves free one week pass, only for new visitors to Curves clubs. This proved a popular deal when I mentioned it back in the spring, although quantities were capped and the offer ran out fast.  But it’s back for a limited time. UPDATE: This deal has now expired and links to the free pass are removed.

The Curves women-only fitness and weight-loss clubs claim that their 30-minute strength training and cardio workout exercises every major muscle group and burns up to 500 calories. Which by my calculation means I can enjoy a few more of our weekly food freebies and deals  isn’t that how it works?

Here at Cheap Central the temptation is more often to go for the coffee pot than go for the burn, and if someone mentions major muscle groups, I immediately think of the Chippendales. BUT in this season of lavish feasting, any way to keep my svelte (ha!) figure catches my attention.

For a limited time, you can get a free Curves one week guest pass to see if the Curves program is a good fit for you. This offer is only for new members, with no contracts and commitments, and it can be used for a free week guest pass on your first visit, or exchanged for a membership discount. The pass is valid until December 23, 2012.

The Curves free week pass is valid at participating locations – plug in your zip code for the nearest clubs. I see at least 9 participating Albuquerque Curves, including Bernalillo and Los Lunas.

Curves clubs are all franchises, independently owned and operated by locals.

I am now going to assess my major muscle groups. (Shh! Don’t tell Mr Cheap. )

And sorry to the fellas –  Curves clubs are for women only.

The Curves women-only fitness and weight-loss clubs claim that their 30-minute strength training and cardio workout exercises every major muscle group and burns up to 500 calories. Which by my calculation means I can enjoy a few more of our weekly food freebies and deals…  isn’t that how it works?

It has to be said that here at Cheap Central the temptation is more often to go for the coffee pot than go for the burn, and if someone mentions major muscle groups, we immediately think of the Chippendales.

BUT… summer = swimsuits, need we say more?

If you want to see if the Curves program is a good fit for you, there are two free Curves deals this summer at participating locations:

  • Try Curves free on Tuesdays – offer good for up to 3 visits for non-members only, until August 28, 2010
  • Free Curves two week trial membership for you and a friend when you take two UPC proofs of purchase from any 10 oz or larger size Frigo Cheese Heads String Cheese. You can also choose to swap the two week free trial for a membership discount. Offer valid to August 31, 2010.

Curves clubs are all franchises, independently owned and operated by locals.

And sorry to the fellas also straining to fit into last year’s swimsuit, Curves clubs are for women only.

Offers are only at participating locations, check with your local club. Here’s a list of Albuquerque Curves, including Bernalillo, Rio Rancho, Los Lunas, and further afield in New Mexico.

Thanks to Hortense P. Tightwad at Tucson on the Cheap for the tip, and I am now going to assess my major muscle groups. (Shh! Don’t tell my husband.)

Free: Mayor Marty’s 3rd Annual Conference for Women

Comments Off on Free: Mayor Marty’s 3rd Annual Conference for Women

We’ve heard good things about this event from past participants, not to mention it sounds like a ton of fun!

On Saturday, May 16 (2009), join Mayor Martin Chávez and other Albuquerque women at the Mayor’s 3rd Annual Conference for Women, where you’ll enjoy a FREE brunch, a workshop on developing financial skills, and scads of vendor booths.

The conference runs from 8:00am – noon, so you’ll still have plenty of time to enjoy the weekend. Here’s the agenda:

  • 8:00-8:30am: Registration
  • 9:00-9:45am: Brunch
  • 9:45-10:00am: Mayor Martin Chávez
  • 10:00-11:00am: Workshop
  • 8:00am-noon: Vendor booths

The workshop will be presented by Gena Wilimitis, Investor Education Coordinator with the New Mexico Securities Division, and will cover how to identify strategies for increasing income, how to use debt intelligently, and how to develop financial decision-making skills. This is information anyone could benefit from!

The event is free, but registration is requested by calling 311 before Friday, May 15. Also, parking at the Convention Center will set you back $6. Or, if you don’t mind walking a couple blocks, you can park for FREE in these two lots: Wells Fargo Bank, just north of Third and Roma, or the surface lot (only) at Laz Parking, which is directly across the street (west) from Wells Fargo.

As stated, the event will be held at the Convention Center, 401 Second St NW, Albuquerque.
