Pat Benatar Concert: Buy in Advance, Save $5

$25 to hear Pat Benatar in concert on August 10? A pretty good deal we think.
Iconic Pat Benatar plays at the Rio Grande Zoo on Tuesday August 10 at 7:30 pm. Just the thought of it gets me in the mood for a 1980s strut. Love is a Battlefield or Shadows of the Night, anyone? She’s performing with a band led by guitarist Neil Giraldo and concert proceeds benefit the New Mexico BioPark Society.
If you wait to buy Pat Benatar Concert tickets at the gate on the day they cost $30. That’s already a pretty good deal for an artist of her stature.
BUT: Buy in advance and you’ll save $5 – tickets are available either in person from ABQ BioPark cashiers or online for $25.
And note that if you’re bringing kids, children under age 3 have free admission.
Order tickets online from the link at the City of Albuquerque Rio Grande Zoo site – they email them to you to print out yourself. (Easy peasy – no shipping costs and no need to drive down to the BioPark to purchase!)
- When: Tuesday August 10, 2010
- Time: Gates open at 6 pm for the concert at 7:30 pm
- Price: $25 in advance, $30 at the gate. Kids under 3 go free.
- Where: Rio Grande Zoo
It’s the same deal for the country artist Blake Shelton concert on August 27 – tickets are $30 on the day, $25 in advance.
Visitors to Albuquerque – see the map for the Rio Grande Zoo, located at 903 10th St. SW

Free Kids’ Admission to Albuquerque BioPark
June 12, 2010 by Tania
Here’s a great way to enjoy ABQ BioPark facilities without breaking the bank this summer!
Every Monday between Memorial Day and Labor Day, one paying adult ($7) can bring up to FOUR children into the Rio Grande Zoo or Albuquerque Aquarium and Rio Grande Botanic Gardens with FREE admission for the kids! That’s a savings of $12. What a deal!
This is a great deal for a family outing, playdate, or for anyone who would like to take advantage of an affordable option for visiting the zoo or aquarium. Note that the deal only applies to the admission price.
The offer (which is tucked away in the BioPark’s FAQ under “School Field Trips and Group Scheduling”!) begins the Monday after Memorial Day and ends the Monday before Labor Day.
Albuquerque BioPark admission is always free for children aged under 3, and of course the BioPark’s Tingley Beach is also always free for everyone.
All together now: Mama’s taking us to the zoo tomorrow, the zoo tomorrow, the zoo tomorrow…

The second annual National Get Outdoors Day encourages us to back slowly away from the remote control and brave the Realm of No Air Conditioning, otherwise known as Outside.
Once we’re there, we’ll find free outdoor fun for all the family this Saturday for National Get Outdoors Day (GO Day). The event at Tingley Beach includes:
- Rock climbing walls
- Camping demonstrations
- Fishing clinic (I think this is in the morning, 10 am to noon – call the BioPark to be sure)
- Wildlife watching
- Short guided hikes into the bosque
- GPS and orienteering
- Free prize drawings for outdoor gear and America the Beautiful Passes worth $80
- Bring your camera to take photos with Smokey Bear and (woof!) Bobber the Water Safety Dog.
You can also get more info about cheap outdoor activities and local events this summer.
National Get Outdoors Day is not actually a full day, just kind of an extended lunchtime, so we can probably all manage that.
- When: Saturday June 12, 2010
- Time: 10 am to 2 pm
- Where: Tingley Beach, 1800 Tingley Dr SW
And it’s all totally free.

Many thanks to our friend Tania for ferreting out this deal, which is buried in the BioPark’s FAQ under “School Field Trips and Group Scheduling”!
Here’s a great way to enjoy the BioPark facilities without breaking the bank this summer!
Every Monday between Memorial Day and Labor Day, one paying adult can bring up to FOUR children into the zoo or aquarium/botanic garden for FREE! That’s a savings of $12. What a deal!
This is a great deal for homeschoolers, as well as anyone who simply would like to take advantage of an affordable option for visiting the zoo or aquarium. Note that the deal only applies to the admission price.
The Rio Grande Zoo, Albuquerque Aquarium, and Rio Grande Botanic Garden all are located near 903 10th St SW, just southwest of downtown.

Summer Volunteer Program for Teens
Landing a summer job is always tough as a teenager, and it might be even tougher this year. So, here’s an alternative: volunteer for the BioPark.
The BioPark offers several volunteer positions for teens age 14 and up on a year-round basis. Summer volunteer positions include BioPark Nature Guides (for ages 14 and up) and Conservation Camp Counselor (for ages 16 and up).
Nature Guides may work at the zoo, aquarium, or botanic garden. They staff the summer discovery areas and conduct hands-on activities using cool stuff like shark teeth to “excite visitors about conservation,” according to the Nature Guide job description.
Conservation Camp Counselors help lead the Camp BioPark classes for kids during the summer. Counselors assist teachers with the activities and games designed for each program, perform set-up and clean-up for each class, and generally wrangle the participants. For more, see the Conservation Camp Counselor job description.
Volunteering at the BioPark will look great on your resume, plus you’ll gain valuable job skills. Each of these positions requests a minimum time commitment, so make sure your schedule will allow you to fulfill your commitment. In exchange, you’ll receive certain benefits, which vary by position, but we hunch it includes free admission to the attractions.
Applications for both of these positions (along with all the other BioPark volunteer positions) are available at the BioPark’s website.
You gotta do something this summer, so why not spend your time in the gorgeous surroundings of the Albuquerque BioPark facilities? Sounds like a win-win to us!

If you enjoy taking your family to Albuquerque’s Biological Park attractions (the Rio Grande Zoo, Albuquerque Aquarium, and Rio Grande Botanic Garden), you can’t beat this deal.
If you join the New Mexico BioPark Society before April 30, 2009, you get two extra months of membership free! Membership already is a great bargain. With several packages available you can pick the one that’s right for you. Here’s just one example.
A Family membership for 2 adults and up to 4 children (or 3 adults and 2 children) costs $79 per year and gets you:
- Free admission to the Albuquerque Aquarium, Rio Grande Zoo, and Rio Grande Botanic Garden as often as you’d like throughout the year
- Half-price admission to the ZooMusic and Summer Nights concert series
- Free or discounted admission to more than 150 U.S. zoos, aquariums, and botanic gardens
- Free admission to ZooBoo, Father’s Day Fiesta at the Zoo, and the annual Mother’s Day Symphony Concert
- Discounts in all BioPark gift shops
- Discounts on BioPark education classes
- Discounts on BioPark special events
- Subscription to BioScape magazine
- Invitations to the annual members-only party and exclusive members-only previews and events
That’s a lot of stuff for just $79 per year, considering a single trip to the combined BioPark attractions would normally cost a family of four around $40 at the regular admission price. Other BioPark Society memberships range in price from $49 to $299.
Like we said, if you sign up before April 30, you’ll get 2 additional months of membership free. And if you sign up before May 31, you’ll receive a one-time-use guest pass.
View the various membership tiers, and then sign up online. Use the code ASU to get the freebies!
You also can join by calling 764-6280, or in person at any BioPark attraction.
The Albuquerque BioPark attractions all are located in the vicinity of 2601 Central Ave NW, near downtown Albuquerque.

FREE KIDS’ FISHING FAIR AT TINGLEY BEACH — FREE BAG-O-GOODIES
When I was a kid, I loved going fishing with my grandpa, who tied his own flies. Here’s an opportunity for you to start (or continue) a fishing tradition with your kids or grandkids.
Kids ages 4-12 are invited to a free fishing fair at Tingley Beach on Saturday, February 28, from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Sponsored by the Albuquerque Biopark, New Mexico Game & Fish, REI, New Mexico Trout, Wildlife Rescue Inc of New Mexico, and the Albuquerque Cultural Services Department, the fair will feature 11 discovery stations where kids can learn about things like fly tying, “leave no trace” ethics, and what to do with injured or orphaned wildlife.
No registration is required, and every kid receives a free bag of fishing goodies!
Tingley Beach is located at 1800 Tingley Dr SW, south of Central Ave and east of the Central bridge.
