Comments Off on Free Admission to NM Museum of Natural History & Science: March 1
New Mexico residents get in free to The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science on the first Sunday of every month. So the next free admission day is this Sunday March 1, 2015, from 9 am to 5 pm.
This Sunday March 1 between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm, they’ll also have a special event to celebrate the special exhibit “Birds of Paradise.” You’ll be able to meet New Mexico bird experts as well as learn how New Mexico is working to protect our New Mexico birds. Karen Herzenberg, a naturalist who serves on the advisory committee for New Mexico Master Naturalist Program, will share her knowledge about the fascinating Florence Merriam Bailey. Bailey is the author of “Birds Through an Opera Glass” (1889) and “Birds of New Mexico” (1928). The presentation will be geared for children and families from 11:00 to noon. From 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, the presentation will be geared for adults.
You can visit the other museum’s displays for free, including their core exhibits which offer a journey through billions of years of New Mexico’s natural history, from the formation of the universe to the present day. Don’t forget the Naturalist Center room for kids to see specimens and go ‘hands-on’ with exhibits.
To get free admission on the first Sunday of the month, take your New Mexico ID. The free admission day saves $7 per adult (aged 13-59), $6 for seniors aged 60+, and $4 for kids (aged 3-12) on the usual ticket price.
Even with the freebie, you have to pay regular admission if you want to go in to the Lockheed Martin DynaTheater or the Planetarium.
New Mexico resident seniors age 60+ also continue to get free admission every Wednesday to the NM Museum of Natural History and Science.
New Mexico Museum of Natural and Science is located in Albuquerque Old Town at 1801 Mountain Road NW.
Comfort Dental offers free dental care to anyone in need on the 31st annual Care Day, Wednesday December 24, 2014.
Yeah, going to the dentist is the last thing anyone wants to do on Christmas Eve. But it’s tough paying those dental bills and I hate the thought of anyone – especially kids – missing out on dental care for lack of funds. These dentist angels from Comfort Dental are volunteering their time and services to provide assistance and relief to those who can’t afford regular dental attention.
Comfort Dental Care’s free dental treatment on Wednesday December 24 is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, from 7:30 am – 11:30 am. The free clinics are intended to provide basic dental care from cleanings to extractions. More serious problems will be handled according to the discretion of the dentist.
Comfort Dental offices in eleven states are participating, including Comfort Dental New Mexico, at these Albuquerque Comfort Dental locations.
In 2013, Care Day provided $1.5 million in free dental care services to nearly 5000 patients nationally. As VP Dr. Neil Norton says: “There are a lot of families out there who just can’t afford dental care, and this is their only dental visit all year.” It’s best to arrive early.
Thanks to the tooth fairies at Comfort Dental for working on Christmas Eve, and for donating this gift of free dental care to the community. Find all the info on Comfort Dental free Care Day at the link.

Comments Off on Albuquerque Philharmonic Free Christmas Concerts
Albuquerque Philharmonic Orchestra gives two identical free concerts before Christmas, so if you can’t make one evening, go to the other!
The two free Albuquerque Philharmonic Orchestra concerts with guest conductor Wojciech Milewski are on December 19 and 21, 2015. No tickets are required and admittance is on a first come, first served basis. Even though these concerts are free, donations are gratefully accepted. www.nmapo.org or (505)433-7445.
Both classical concerts feature the same program: “In Autumn” by Grieg, Symphony No.1 (mvts 1 & 2) by Tchaikovsky, “A Winter’s Tale” by Lars-Erik Larsson, Karelia Suite and Spring Song, both by Sibelius.
The free Albuquerque Philharmonic Orchestra concerts take place:
- Friday December 19, 2014 at 7:30 pm at St. Therese Church, 3424 Fourth St NW Albuquerque.
- Sunday December 21, 2014 at 3:00 pm at the Hiland Theater/NDI, 4800 Central Ave SE, Albuquerque.
I went to one of the Albuquerque Philharmonic Orchestra concerts and it was a real knockout. It was beautiful to hear this incredible music in a relatively intimate setting – so close that you can feel just about every vibration in your body. What a gift it is to be able to experience this.
Thank you very much to the Albuquerque Philharmonic for giving us the chance to hear such wonderful classical music by such accomplished musicians – not even on the cheap, but totally free!
Free Shipping Day is Thursday December 18, 2014, and 839 stores are signed up (so far!) to give customers free shipping for orders taken on the 18th. They say delivery will be by Christmas Eve for addresses in the continental United States. All Free Shipping Day offers will be revealed on this website at 12:01am EST on Thursday, December 18, 2014.
Online merchants taking part include Cabelas, REI, The Body Shop, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Office Depot, Levi’s, American Eagle, Sheplers, J.Crew, Bass Pro Shops, Harry & David, Omaha Steaks, and a whole bunch more.
Participating Free Shipping Day merchants offer free holiday shipping with no minimum order. Others may have exclusions – for example the items must be in stock or oversized items are excluded (because Santa’s sleigh can’t deliver in time, I suppose.) Some also offer special discounts with Free Shipping Day. Check the details of each merchant’s offer on the Free Shipping Day website.
I’m always nervous of free shipping so close to Christmas as my Christmas tree has been left with holes under it in the past when the package didn’t roll in till after the Big Day. Now I generally pony up to pay shipping if it’s someone’s main gift, to avoid disappointment. However, the Free Shipping Day folk have said that many merchants pay for expedited shipping to get it to shoppers by Christmas Eve.
I’d always encourage you to shop from local businesses, but if you shop online at the national retailers anyway, perhaps to send gifts to distant friends or relatives, Free Shipping Day is a chance to save a few dollars on gifts.
Comments Off on Discount Golf Lessons at Twin Warriors
These discounted golf lesson packages could make a great gift for the golfer in your life – available for purchase until December 31, 2014.
I always like giving people unforgettable experiences for Christmas and this does not include my attempt at singing “Jingle Bells” in a minor key.
So these golf instruction deals at Twin Warriors Golf Club caught my eye. They could be a hole in one if you’ve got a golfer to buy for, or you like hitting the greens yourself. The discounted packages are with Sandy Lemon, the Director of Golf Instruction, and there’s a range of prices to suit all pockets.
- $25 off Golf Instruction Gift Certificate – usually $100, now $75
- $40 off a one-hour private lesson and a 30-minute follow-up – usually $120, now $80
- $40 off a 90-minute “your choice” package on things like putting, chipping and pitching, etc… – usually $120, now $80
- $35 off a 90-minute package for two people on full swing and short game, usually $135, now $100
They’re available to buy till December 31, 2014, then the gift must be redeemed by the end of December 2015. The final order date for delivery by Christmas is Friday December 19, 2014.
Expect to pay $1 for shipping, and you can personalize the certificate with a message for the recipient.
Find out more about Sandy Lemon here – she’s got a very impressive golfing bio and is Director of Instruction for Twin Warriors Golf Club at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and Spa, and also for the Santa Ana Golf Club.

Comments Off on Toys for Tots and a Free Aveda Haircut
I have a soft spot for the US Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program. Toys for Tots aims to give every child a merry Christmas by ensuring they have a new toy, no matter how difficult their family’s economic circumstances.
The Albuquerque Marine Toys for Tots program distributes donated new toys as gifts to less fortunate kids in Albuquerque – and a fine job they do of it. They’re kind of like our home-grown Santas!
Of course everything depends on us making donations, so feel free to take new and unwrapped gifts for a child, boy or girl, to the many local collection points through December 11, 2014.
Here’s the list of Albuquerque Marine Toys for Tots drop-off points, which conveniently include two Toys R Us locations.
On Wednesday December 8, 2014, the Aveda Institute New Mexico will hold a Toys for Tots Hair Cuts for Toys from 9 am to 6 pm. Take in a new toy donation for Toys for Tots to the value of $15 and get a free shampoo, haircut and make-up tips! Aveda Institute New Mexico is located at 1816 Central Avenue SW in Old Town. Call 505-294-5333 for your appointment.
Comments Off on Holiday Twinkle Light Parade
You’d have to be walking around with your eyes shut not to know about this already. But hey, we’re all busy people. Maybe you forgot about it. Or maybe you just flew into the Duke City and never knew about it in the first place. This family-friendly event is a holiday favorite and a must-see for all.
This year the Twinkle Light Parade takes place on Saturday December 6, 2014 at 5:15 p.m.
Expect to see floats, lowriders, AFD fire trucks and classic cars, equestrian clubs – even a small train – all dressed up for the holidays. The City of Albuquerque reckons there will be more than 1,000 walkers, plus all the usual high school marching bands I love watching. The bands are always festive and smart, and the kids are so very brave as they march through the cold. Santa Claus and Mrs Claus usually roll by in the Twinkle Light Parade too. (Santa, of course, is used to the cold.)
The Twinkle Light Parade starts glitzing with more than 300,000 twinkling lights at 5:15 pm on December 6, traveling west along Central Avenue from Washington Street to Girard Boulevard. Bleachers will make it easier for everyone to watch the parade. The City of Albuquerque reckons that there are more than 90 floats (cars, horses, bicycles, anything they can gussy up with sparkly lights) in the parade this year.
I do so love this festive event, but dress warmly – I’ve nearly frozen my tootsies off watching the parade in previous years. At time of writing, it’s looking a bit rainy out there, but the Twinkle Light Parade will sparkle on no matter what – it’s a rain or shine event.
Comments Off on Coronado State Monument Christmas at Kuaua
Coronado State Monument’s free Christmas event for all the family creates a festive glow and includes cider and biscochitos! The monument’s name was changed just over a year ago. Don’t forget that it is now called the Coronado Historic Site.
The Christmas at Kuaua event at Coronado Historic Site lights up the luminarias on the evening of Sunday December 7, 2014, from 5 pm.
The evening’s activities include a Santa’s Workshop for kids to make a Christmas tree ornament. That is followed at 6 pm by Native American storytelling, traditional Pueblo dancing, and music. Amidst the luminarias and Christmas lights, they’ll have a lovely bonfire too, assuming the weather conditions are right.
Admission is free, and to help everyone keep warm (with or without a bonfire) the Friends of Coronado will also provide free hot apple cider and biscochitos.
Coronado Historic Site Christmas at Kuaua gets festive:
- When: Sunday December 7, 2014
- Time: From 5 pm
- Where: Coronado Historic Site (a.k.a. Coronado State Monument) in Bernalillo
- Price: Admission is free!
Coronado Historic Site is just off I-25, at exit 242, in Bernalillo.
