Free Nature Walks, Bird Walks, Moon Walks

The Rio Grande Nature Center is one of my favorite places to escape from the bustle of town. These regular bird walks, nature walks, and moon walks are free for all, just pay the park admission fee of $3 per vehicle.

In addition to the regular weekly and monthly walks, I spy a Spanish walk on September 29 at 9 am. Un Paseo por el Bosque: Spanish Nature Walk is described as suitable for all ages and levels of Spanish language proficiency. I also see a Twilight Hike on September 29 – for start time contact the Nature Center.

  • Moon Walks
    October 29, November 28, and December 28, 2012
These moon walks have nothing to do with Michael Jackson! Beat it down to the Bosque on a full moon night to spot nocturnal wildlife during the free walks led by naturalists and Nature Center staff. Reservations are required for the twilight hikes on a moonlit night, and start time is provided when you make your booking at (505) 344-7240.
  • Bird Walks
Led by naturalists each Saturday and Sunday morning, starting at 8:30 am through November, then at 9 am from December to February.
  • Nature Walks
A naturalist-led tour of the bosque at 10 am this Sunday September 30, then at 1 pm on Sundays in October through May.

Find any updates on Rio Grande Nature Center events at the Activities link on their home page.

Rio Grande Nature Center State Park is located at 2901 Candelaria Rd NW.  Members of the Friends of the Rio Grande Nature Center receive free parking/admission.

We’ve done the moon walk a few times, including this past weekend and always have a great time. I want to mention that the sign says that you only have to pay for the $3 parking before 6pm or something like that. So, since the moonlit walks are after then, it’s free!! But please ask them to make sure and don’t take my word for it 100%, that’s just what I noticed on the parking sign. Also, the moon walks fill up VERY quickly!
