Free Week of Yoga Classes

September 1, 2013 by

National Yoga Month heads to the mat in September 2013, and new students at participating yoga studios get a week of free yoga in September or October with the Yoga Month Card.

National Yoga Month aims to educate us on the benefits of yoga and inspire everyone to live healthier, happier lives. Can’t argue with that, can you?

As part of the celebration, new students can get a free week of yoga classes with the Yoga Month Card, throughout September and October until October 30, 2013.

The card for a free week of yoga is for NEW students only, to give you a chance to try out yoga at participating studios. Our understanding from conversations with the yoga teachers in previous years is that ‘new student’ means new to a particular studio – you don’t have to be a beginner. But check in advance with your chosen studio with any questions.

Participating Albuquerque yoga studios at time of writing (more may be added) are:

  • Midtown Sports & Wellness (4100 Prospect NE)
  • Holistic Wellness Co-Op (1024 Eubank NE)
  • Albuquerque Ashtanga Yoga (206 Dartmouth Drive NE)
  • Kundun Yoga in Cedar Crest

Register for the Free Yoga Month Card, choose a studio, then print out the card. The offer is for one yoga card per person, and you can only choose one studio. You can’t change your selection later, so confirm any questions in advance with the studio to be certain you’ve picked the one you want.  It’s possible that more studios may join the program so you can always wait a few days if the ones listed aren’t so convenient for you.

Then use the card for a week’s worth of free lessons until October 30, 2013.

Sadly there don’t seem to be any other Albuquerque free yoga events this year – sometimes there have been special free classes. But perhaps some will come on board or let us know if they’ve got National Yoga Month specials on offer. If so, I’ll update.

Still, the luxury of a week of free yoga classes is rather fab. And if you’re going to do a sun salutation, what better place to do it than sunny Albuquerque?

Bookworks Teacher Appreciation Party

Bookworks is throwing a special event for educators, with 25% off purchases.

Teachers turning up for the Bookworks Teacher Appreciation Party on Monday October 15, 2012, can expect a little more than an apple! The event starts at 4 pm, with a 25% discount for educators on all purchases from 4 pm onwards. That’s not just a discount on books, but on cards, mugs, soaps, and the other gift items on sale at Bookworks. (I can spend hours in there. And I often do.)

Other out-of-the-classroom activities include a 6 pm appearance by Stephen McCranie, the author of the Mal and Chad series of graphic novels, to give a talk and sign books. Expect a mini yoga clinic, chocolate tasting (yum! I always like chocolate after my yoga, or even during my yoga) and refreshments and prize drawings.

Yay to Bookworks for offering an event to celebrate teachers, because by golly I don’t know where I would be without some wonderful teachers who helped me when I was a mere lass. Hard to imagine I was ever a mere lass, but I promise it’s true.

Bookworks is an independent bookstore, located at 4022 Rio Grande Blvd NW, next to Flying Star Cafe.

Get a week of free yoga in October 2012 with the Yoga Month Card – but you have to sign up fast!

I mentioned this deal at the beginning of September as part of the National Yoga Month celebrations.

Daizy the Elephant Birthday Party

ABQ BioPark Zoo celebrates Daizy the elephant’s birthday, and I can’t quite believe it’s her third birthday already. She’s growing up so fast she’ll be off to college soon. But indeed it is her birthday, so here’s how to celebrate with her…

ABQ BioPark Zoo holds the Daizy the Elephant birthday party on Saturday August 25, 2012, and you can find out all about these rare Asian elephants too, and how they are being protected.  The event runs from 10 am to 2 pm, and activities are included with zoo admission.

There seems to be a lot of singing and dancing going on, by the elephants as well as by the humans. I’m tempted to go to the zoo just to witness that spectacle.  They’re also holding a Public Art Scavenger Hunt in the zoo on Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm.

The day’s events include:

  • 10 am: Kick off with storytime, discovery stations and Girl Scout Daizy patch challenges.
  • 10:30 am: Questions and answers with the zookeeper.
  • 11 am:  Dancing by the elephants Albert and Samson (I’m guessing it’s not tap dancing. Could be ballet…)
  • 11:30 am: Yoga demonstration. By elephants? By humans? Who knows? Should be fun.  I guess it’s the Asian theme.
  • 12:30 pm:  Questions and answers with the zookeeper.
  • 1 pm: Now this is sweet! Daizy’s mother and grandma, Rozie and Alice, will sing a duet.
  • 1:30 pm:  Everyone sings happy birthay to Daizy when she’s given her cake.

The Daizy birthday event and elephant conservation day  activities on August 25 are included with ABQ BioPark Zoo regular admission: $7 for adults, $3 for seniors 65+, $3 for kids aged 3-12, ages 2 and under go free. Military (active and non-active) get $2 off adult admission and $1 off children’s admission, with your military ID.

ABQ BioPark Zoo (formerly the Rio Grande Zoo) is located at 903 10th Street SW.

Massage Fest: August 11

August 8, 2012 by
Filed under Events, Spas & Health

It’s not often I get sent information about a Massage O’Fest, but I’m glad Dawn at the Albuquerque School of Massage Therapy & Health Sciences told me about this event, because it looks fun… and it’s free!

The Massage O’Fest celebrates the school’s two year anniversary on Saturday August 11, 2012, from
10 am to 4 pm. What happens at a Massage O’Fest? Good question. Apparently at this one they’ll have free chair massages, a free yoga class led by Awaken Yoga Spa, live music, jumpers for the kids, snow cones, and a dunk tank.

The first 25 people to turn up also get a free massage card, which gives you a $5 discount on every massage you have at the clinic for one year. Very cool.

The school is based way up in the North Valley, and here are the times for the main events:

  • 10 am: Fire ceremony and blessing
  • 11 am: Free outdoor yoga class under the cottonwoods (sounds bliss!)
  • 12 noon: Celtic & folk band Rye Creek performs until 1:30 pm
  • 2 pm: Piñata time!

The ABQ School of Massage Therapy Massage O’Fest takes place:

When: Saturday August 11, 2012
Time:  10 am – 4 pm
Where:   Albuquerque School of Massage Therapy & Health Sciences
Price:  Admission is free

Albuquerque School of Massage Therapy & Health Sciences is located at 10590 2nd Street, Suite A. This is about as far north as you can go on Second Street before it stops being Second Street.
