Most New Mexicans are chile green all year long, but on St. Patrick’s Day, we all turn emerald green for 24 hours. Here’s a brief roundup of a few free and cheap ways to celebrate St. Patty’s Day in Albuquerque:

  • FREE RIDES HOME FROM DOWNTOWN – The Downtown Action Team has partnered with the New Mexico Department of Transportation to provide free rides home for St. Patrick’s revelers. Called “The JIT,” this service by Airport Shuttle helps you avoid DWI or, you know, killing yourself or someone else. To participate, simply go to 4th and Central between 10:00pm and 2:00am on Tuesday, March 17. Write this down because if you need the service, you’re unlikely to remember these instructions!
  • CHEAP RIDES HOME FROM ANYWHERE – Not free, but cheaper than a DWI. For $28.50, Sober Navigators will drive you and your car home (up to 10 miles) from anywhere around Albuquerque. Unlike other services, they don’t make you wait on a street corner, and they pledge to show up within 20 minutes of your phone call. One driver takes you in your car, while a second driver follows behind to take their driver to the next call. To get home safely, call 934-8033 or 934-8034. Note: You can also catch Sober Navigators downtown at 4th & Central on Tuesday night.
  • HALF PRICE APPETIZERS AT T.G.I.FRIDAY’S – Plus green beer. What more do you need on a mid-week St. Patty’s Day?
  • FOOD, DRINK SPECIALS AT O’NIELL’S IRISH PUB – On Monday (tonight!) enjoy free music by High Desert Pipers, plus two specialty brews on tap for one night only in New Mexico; on Tuesday, March 17, the High Desert Pipers entertain again, plus drink specials (including Irish Green Eyes) and food specials including lamb stew and potato soup

We know this brief list represents only a tiny fraction of St. Pat’s celebrations in Albuquerque this 2009. Tell us where you will be celebrating — and why! Maybe we can include your fave Irish bar next year.
