Free service dog eye exams in May – but you have to register in advance by April 30, 2012.

This is in the nature of a public service announcement – and thanks to Anne at VCA Hospitals for telling us about it!

The 5th annual ACVO National Service Dog Eye Exam event in May 2012 provides a free screening eye exam to service animals including guide dogs. You have to register by April 30 at the ACVO National Service Dog Eye Exam website, you can’t just arrive at the service provider.

The national program includes guide dogs, hearing dogs, dogs assisting people with disabilities other than blindness, detection dogs, police dogs, search and rescue dogs, and formally trained and certified therapy dogs. Dogs need to have appropriate certification and/or training paperwork to qualify for the program, so check out all the details at the link.

Participating venues in Albuquerque are:

  • VCA Veterinary Care Referral Center, where Dr. Nancy McLean,DVM, DACVO (veterinary ophthalmologist) will perform free eye exams for service and working dogs on Monday May 3.
  • Eye Care for Animals, which is also running the program during May.

But again – you need to register first for the ACVO National Service Dog Eye Exam by Monday April 30, where you’ll find all the details on how the program works, who is eligible, and the service providers.
