Courtesy of our friends at Tucson on the Cheap, and via Cities on the Cheap, here’s a neat little deal that would make a fantastic weekend getaway.

If you’re turning 50 this year or celebrating your 50th anniversary, you can ride the Grand Canyon Railway free from Williams, Arizona, to Grand Canyon National Park. Why? Because the railway’s diesel locomotives were built in 1959 — so they’re turning 50, too!

Folks turning 50 this year may ride for free within 7 days of their birthday. People celebrating their golden anniversary may ride free anytime during 2009. You’ll save the price of a ticket: $70! To get your free ticket, you must call 1-800-843-8724.

This free travel deal sounds like fun for any outdoor enthusiast or train buff. Chugga-chugga, woo woo!
