Thanks to reader Steve L. for alerting us to this seminar!

Don’t throw away those limes, olives, and other potent potable garnishes! You can turn them into valuable compost for your lawn and garden.

Bernalillo County Open Space is offering a free organic composting class on Saturday, April 18 (2009), 9:30am, at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House. Plus, the first 20 people to RSVP will get a FREE bag of compost!

Greg Baker, Compost Specialist (what a fantastic job title!) with the New Mexico Environment Department, will discuss how many household items that are commonly thrown out can be turned into fertile soil for your indoor plants and vegetable gardens. Participants are asked to bring their kitchen scraps, so start collecting them now.

The seminar runs from 9:30 to noon. RSVP (required) by calling Colleen Langan at 314-0398 or by e-mailing

The Gutierrez-Hubbell House is located at 6029 Isleta Blvd, Albuquerque.

By the way, Steve is a friend of ours and a descendant of the Hubbells. That’s just our way of saying, “Support the Hubbell House Alliance!”

Please add to the compost a small caveat: kitchen scraps do NOT include chicken skin and other meats. Compost is for specific things, but not meat. I made that mistake because i did not know that all kitchen scraps were not created equal…
