Thanks to our friends at Charlotte on the Cheap, we found out about Free Comic Book Day. How’s it work? Simple.

On the first Saturday in May (in 2009, that’s May 2nd), sashay into any participating comic book store and walk out with a FREE comic!

That’s it! No catches!

The purpose of the event is to draw attention to literacy. For many children, comic books represent the gateway to the world of reading. That’s not just a good thing — it’s a great thing!

Watch this video, in which Hugh Jackman, star of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, talks about Free Comic Book Day and the importance of comic books in combating illiteracy. Then enjoy the subsequent trailer for the movie.

In Albuquerque, a slew of comic book shops are participating. At Lobo Anime & Comics, you can even see a replica of the 1960s Batmobile!

So, grab your kids or your grandkids or your neighborhood kids and head out to your local comic book shop for Free Comic Book Day. Start someone down the path to a livelong love of reading.
