This is always a great event!

The Local Food Festival & Field Day is billed as “a celebration of food from the ground up,” and it’s true to its name. The festival, held Saturday, May 16, starts at 9:00am with the San Ysidro Blessing and Procession at the Sanchez Farm (maps below). Bring your seeds and garden tools to be blessed to ensure a fruitful garden!

The procession marches to the Gutierrez-Hubbell House and Demonstration Farm, where the main festival runs from 12:00 noon through 3:00pm. It’s hard to characterize the broad range of activities you can participate in, but here’s a sampling:

  • Speakers on topics like beekeeping, backyard composting, and how to use healing herbs
  • Kids’ activities like a puppet show, face painting, and sack races
  • Demonstrations, including jam making and flood irrigation techniques
  • Tastings of local foods prepared by chefs, plus sample local honey, jam, and produce
  • Meet local growers and producers in the agricultural community
  • Buy local produce, herbs, seedlings — even locally made chicken coops! — from over 60 vendors
  • Relax with your family and enjoy the bluegrass music of Young Edward

We recommend you check out this concise schedule of events. To really whet your appetite, check out this slideshow of last year’s event (scroll to the bottom of the page)!

Whether you’re interested in sustainable agriculture, consider yourself a locavore, or just want a fun day that revolves around food (and, seriously, who doesn’t want that?), you should check out the 2009 Local Food Festival & Field Day!

The San Ysidro Blessing will begin at 9:00am at the corner of Arenal SW and Isleta SW, in Albuquerque’s south valley.

The festival will take place from noon to 3:00pm at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House, 6029 Isleta Blvd SW, Albuquerque.
