National Free Fishing Day and Free Fly-Fishing Lesson for Kids: June 1
National Free Fishing Day is on Saturday June 1, 2013, and on this day anyone may fish without a license in the state of New Mexico.
National Free Fishing Day at Tingley Beach should therefore be a bit of a party with people testing their fishing skills, on Saturday June 1 from 7 am to 8 pm. The fishy celebration day also gives newbies a chance to try out fishing without having to buy a license.
There will be free fly-fishing lessons for kids between 9 am and 1 pm so they can learn about knot-tying, fly-making and casting, and the organizers will even provide the fishing supplies for the kids. Coolio! Plus expect to see education tables to learn more about the art of fishing and the local waters between 10 am and 1 pm.
According to the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, there are only two dates in 2013 when it’s legal to fish in New Mexico without a license. The free fishing day dates are on June 1 and on September 28, 2013. However, all other fishing rules and regs still apply.
I always find Tingley Beach so peaceful. You’re just a stone’s throw away from the city buzz, but out there by the ponds it’s very tranquil. I don’t know if they will have the model boats sailing on June 1 (could be too much congestion!) but I find those delightful to watch too. And I always love the statue of Clyde and Carrie Tingley at Tingley Beach – one of the most touching and cheer-inspiring statues in Albuquerque, in my opinion.
Tingley Beach is part of the Albuquerque BioPark at 1800 Tingley Drive SW.
