Looking for some weekend fun?  Good, because Casa San Ysidro and Old San Ysidro Church in Corrales celebrate Corrales Heritage Day 2012 on Saturday, May 19  from 10  am to 4 pm.

Casa San Ysidro is part of the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, and tours (usually only offered on specified dates/times) generally cost $4 for adults.

But on Corrales Heritage Day Saturday May 19 you can visit Casa San Ysidro for free, and also see demonstrations of blacksmithing, weaving, sheep shearing, bread baking in the horno, and tortilla making, as well as traditional diversions like papel picado. They’ll have live music, and they often have critters to pet, perhaps a llama or a burro, plus children’s activities. I saw the blacksmithing here last year, and it was fascinating. The blacksmith gave me a nail he’d just made. Now, if only I had a hammer…

At the Old San Ysidro Church you can view  exhibits on the Alameda Land Grant, and other historic photos, archives, and exhibits of the Corrales Historical Society, and they also have kids’ activities like making tin ornaments and other arts projects. At 11 am, the chef, author, and cooking teacher Jane Butel will give an illustrated talk on the Culinary History of the Rio Grande.

Did we mention that it’s all FREE admission to this historical extravaganza?
