Old Town Holiday Stroll Albuquerque

The Old Town Holiday Stroll is one of my favorite Albuquerque events of the year.  Can you think of what better free gift the City could give us for the holidays? Ok, don’t answer that…

In case you’ve been off jingling on a sleigh somewhere, the 2012
Old Town Holiday Stroll takes place on Friday December 7 all around the Plaza from 4 pm and running through the evening. Expect carol singers, luminarias, fire pit stages and live entertainment, strolling musicians, Santa Claus at Santa’s Village on South San Felipe Street, and they usually have refreshments and treats in many of the galleries and shops. Plus the part I absolutely love: the countdown to the lighting of the huge Christmas tree. According to the City of Albuquerque, it’s the biggest Christmas tree in New Mexico. (Unless you have secret plans to put a monster tree up in your own yard.)

Ceremonies kick off at 5:30 pm at the Gazebo with the Color Guard and the National Anthem, according to a City of Albuquerque press release. The blessing of the tree in Plaza Don Luis is scheduled for 5:55 pm, followed by the lighting, with Father Dennis Garcia of San Felipe de Neri Church, Mayor Berry, and Steve Stucker.  After the lighting, the Santa Parade around the Plaza is scheduled for 6:15 pm. But a warning on times – as with all these big public events, it’s somewhat a matter of going with the flow. Just turn up plenty of time in advance.

See the full schedule of happenings from 4 pm, including the entertainment all around Old Town from Mariachi groups to Irish dancers and a barbershop quartet, at the Albuquerque Old Town website. If you find that schedule hard to read it’s also at the City of Albuquerque event page.

The Old Town event is free – although of course you’ll be tempted by the hot chocolate and holiday gift shopping. If you donate $5 to The American Heart Association during the event, you’ll receive a 2012 Old Town Holiday Stroll Button that gets you free gifts and discounts at various Old Town Merchants. Or use these Old Town discount coupons, mostly valid through December 24, 2012, for deals including:

  • Buy-one-get-one-free ghost or history tour at Tours of Old Town
  • 10% Off at Church Street Cafe
  • 15% off a $10 or more purchase from Treasure House Books & Gifts
  • Free bisochito at Back Street Grill
  • 20% off three Aveda products at Aveda Institute New Mexico
  • 10% off any purchase at Senor Murphy Candymaker
  • 15% off all merchandise at Southwestern Handcrafts & Gifts
  • 25% off a bead strand or Zuni fetish at New Mexico Bead & Fetish
  • and more…

The 15th annual Old Town Holiday Stroll takes place on Friday December 7, 2012 from 4 pm onwards, and Old Town streets will close at 2 pm to prepare for the evening.

I’ll be there! Parking is tricky on this hot night in Old Town, expect to park a little way away from the main area if you arrive later, or take the Rapid Ride to the Central Avenue/Rio Grande Boulevard stop.
