There’ll be a hot time in the Old Town tonight… or rather this Saturday September 15, 2012, when the eighth annual Salsa Fiesta returns with salsa of both the dipping and the dancing varieties. It’s a free event – so here’s the saucy scoop…

Celebrating all things salsa, Albuquerque’s annual Old Town Salsa Fiesta kicks off at 1 pm on September 15, with salsa bands and dancers on the gazebo and throughout Old Town, and of course (drum roll) the Best Homemade Salsa contest.

Competitors make their salsa on the spot in front of everyone (from 1 – 4 pm), and we, the people, get to taste and cast our votes for the winners (from 4 – 6:30 pm). This is the only part you have to pay for – it’s $5 to buy a wrist band that allows you to taste all the salsas in the contest and then vote for your fave.

The Old Town Salsa Fiesta headline act this year is the 11-piece salsa band La Excelencia, and here’s the full schedule of live entertainment at the Old Town Plaza Gazebo at time of writing:

1 pm – Mala Maña
2:15 pm – Havana Son Cuban Salsa
3:30 pm – Charanga Del Valle
4:45 pm – En-Joy
6:15 pm – A dance demonstration
6:45 pm – Homemade Salsa Competition winners announced. (Wow, that doesn’t give them much time to tally up the winners when voting only ends at 6:30. Good luck, counters!)
7:30 pm – La Excelencia

Albuquerque Salsa Fiesta is a free family-friendly event and it’s extremely popular, so be prepared for bustle and probably some waiting in line.  Public transport is recommended so you don’t get in a sweat driving there and finding parking. Save it for once you start tasting the salsas and grooooving to the music!
