Free Science Cafe for adults at Los Poblanos Inn and Cultural Center about the annular eclipse due in May. Next eclipse like this isn’t till 2023, so best not miss it! Register in advance for the Science Cafe…

New Mexico PBS is hosting a free Science Café  event and discussion at 10 am on Saturday April 21, 2012, about the annular eclipse due on May 20, 2012.  Info on this free event is so hot-off-the-press they don’t even have the details at the Science Cafe website yet (at time of writing). But we’ve got the scoop from a press release, so here’s what you need to know, as I suspect this one will fill fast!

An annular eclipse is a solar eclipse where the moon doesn’t cover the entire sun, but passes across the center to leave a bright ring around the sun’s circumference, so it looks like a ring of fire. (It burns, burns, burns…) The annular eclipse on May 20 will be the first visible in the mainland U.S. in nearly 18 years, and the next one will be in October 2023.  Hey, I’ll try to remember to remind you of that one nearer the time 😉

During the New Mexico PBS Science Cafe on April 21, you can find out more about this eclipse, watch a NOVA segment, and discuss it with an expert from The Albuquerque Astronomical Society. Then you’ll know everything there is to know by the time the sun and the moon do their thang over Albuquerque in May.

The Science Cafe often fills quickly in advance, so make your reservation soon. RSVP by contacting Rose Poston, (505) 277-2396 or email for a reservation. Seats are limited and available on a first come, first served basis.
