Day of the Dead Albuquerque They’re celebrating the Day of the Dead in fine Albuquerque style at the South Broadway Cultural Center, with music, dance, art, and an art market. Best of all, it’s free!

The Día De Los Muertos event will be held on Sunday October 28, 2012, at the South Broadway Cultural Center, from noon to 5 pm. You can also spook yourself with a free presentation by Purple Sage Paranormal on History and Haunting in Bernalillo, from 3 to 4:30 pm in the library, where they’ll share evidence of ghostly spirits at the 300-year-old La Hacienda De La Luna B&B on the historic Camino Real.

The main part of the Día de Los Muertos event is the opening of the art exhibit, with art from local artists and community altars. I love this annual exhibit, it’s always beautiful work and I’m especially chuffed when I spot work displayed by an artist I know – this year my friend Elaine Soto’s art is in the line-up again.  Say hi to her if you meet her there!

The reception also includes:

  • Performances in the theatre by La Rondalla de Albuquerque, La Compania de Danza Xallitic-Cesar Velazquez, and Mariachi Nuevo Mexico.
  • Arts and crafts in the library, and face-painting for kids in true Día de los Muertos fashion by expert artists.
  • An art market featuring work from a variety of folk artists.

Admission is free and if you can’t be there on Sunday, the Day of the Dead art exhibit continues through November 17, 2012.

South Broadway Cultural Center is located at 1025 Broadway SE.
