Free & Cheap Things to Do This Holiday Weekend
Adult Night at Explora today Friday January 18 offers ‘Robotic Critters’ activities from 6:30 to 10 pm. The evening is for adults age 18+ only, and admission of $8 (or $5 for seniors 65+) includes food samples from Whole Foods, live music by Entourage jazz band, film shorts from the 2012 Robot Film Festival and Godzilla vs. Megalon. Plus you can view the night-sky with The Albuquerque Astronomical Society, while members of High Desert Amateur Radio Club fiddle with their equipment and try to contact folk abroad, who might be a tad cross if they wake them up in the middle of their nights. But presumably they know what they’re doing and will target awake foreigners. Sounds like a great date to me!
See the movie Sense and Sensibility free on Saturday January 19 at 11 am at the Downtown Main Library on Copper. The movie is adapted from the Jane Austen novel, starring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman, and it’s part of this month’s free Books to the Big Screen series mentioned in my earlier post.
It’s Albuquerque BioPark Half-Price Weekend on January 19 and 20, with a 50% discount on all individual tickets when you zoom down to the Zoo or to the Aquarium and Botanic Garden. Admission for New Mexico residents on half-price weekend is $4.50 for adults, $2.25 for seniors aged 65+, and $2 for kids aged 3-12. Take your ID! (For those unfortunate enough to reside outside New Mexico, the fees are $6.25 adults, $2.75 seniors, $2 for children.)
Free workshops at The Home Depot for handy men and women include classes on Martha Stewart Living speciality paint and finishes to create various decor effects, and another on kitchen design (both on Saturdays in January) and a Sunday class on design storage. These all run an hour to 90 minutes, check for times and details at the link.
National Parks Fee-Free Day on January 21, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, means you can get into all National Parks in New Mexico (and elsewhere) that usually charge for admission… without paying a cent.
Join a free Rio Grande Nature Center Nature Walk this weekend, choosing from a guided bird walk at 9 am on Saturday and Sunday, or naturalist-led tour through the bosque on Sunday at 1 pm. The walks are free, but if you’re parking at the site the fee is $3 per vehicle, at 2901 Candelaria Rd NW. They also have a Twilight Hike on a Moonlit Night on Thursday January 24 and start time is provided when you make your booking at (505) 344-7240.
Albuquerque’s Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday March and Parade steps out on January 20, starting at 1 pm from the University/Martin Luther King NE intersection, heading Downtown to Harry E. Kinney Civic Plaza.
Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum admission is free on Sunday from 9 am to 1 pm, and the Albuquerque Museum of Art & History is also free on Sundays from 9 am to 1 pm. At Coronado State Monument admission is free on Sundays for New Mexico residents with ID.
Take a Free Tour of the Torreón Fresco at the National Hispanic Cultural Center from noon – 4 pm on Sundays to see the masterful Frederico Vigil 4,000 square foot fresco depicting over 3,000 years of Hispanic history. The National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum also offers free admission on Sundays, from 10 am – 5 pm.

The Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and Spa has a third night free deal for stays through December 30, 2013. According to an email from the deliciously relaxing resort (I’ve stayed there, I know of what I speak, although by the time I leave I generally can’t speak at all) when you book two nights you’ll sleep free the third night, using the promo code: FRTIME
La Posada De Santa Fe Resort & Spa gives you a room for two from $109 at the AAA Four Diamond resort, in an under half price deal via Living Social, while Groupon’s current Southwestern travel deals include 40%+ discounts at Santa Fe’s Hotel St Francis and the new and shiny Luxx Plaza Hotel, and at Angel Fire Ski Resort.
Jackalope has a promo for 15% Off all Furniture from India through the month of January. Some of it looks gorgeous although I have no room in my house for new furniture. Things are a little tight around here space-wise, especially after Christmas feasting and adding on a few pounds. I can barely navigate through the existing furniture as it is. In fact, I’m having to put Mr Cheap in the attic. If YOU have space for new furniture, the discount is at both the Albuquerque and Santa Fe Jackalope locations.
