Albuquerque Old Town’s celebration of Native American Culture for the Centennial takes place with two Native American Days this weekend.

Native American Days are on Friday August 3 and Saturday August 4, 2012, including a mini  Powwow. The events are free and open to everyone to gather and celebrate in Old Town Plaza.

The ceremonies kick off on Friday August 3 at 3 pm with an opening blessing, followed by:

  • 4 pm: Gourd Dance
  • 5 pm: Jemez Pueblo singers and drummers
  • 6 pm: A Mini Powwow until 8 pm

On Saturday August 4 you can hear two award-winning performers at the Old Town Plaza Gazebo:

  • 2 pm: Shelly Morningsong, winner of awards including the New Mexico Music Award for Best Native Contemporary Music and the Native American Music Awards for Debut Artist of the Year.
  • 3:30 pm: Robert Mirabal from Taos Pueblo is a two-time Grammy Award winner and has twice won Native American Artist of the Year. Mirabal performs until 5 pm.

I caught the end of this Old Town event last year and it was terrific. This year’s looks like another great free celebration of Native American culture, with wonderful entertainment to boot!
