The Hi-Lo Country is the next in a series of free movies at the KiMo Theatre, as part of the New Mexico Centennial Film Series.

The KiMo Theatre’s monthly film series puts the spotlight on movies featuring New Mexico, as we would expect in New Mexico centennial year. We are such a star-struck, star-spangled state, in every sense of the words.

The Hi-Lo Country is the free movie at the KiMo on Wednesday October 17 at 7 pm.  I’ve not seen this film, but I’ve just looked it up on IMDb, or the Internet Movie Database, which is the go-to source for things you always wanted to know about movies but didn’t.

The Hi-Lo Country sounds like a bit of a Western buddy movie / bromance, featuring two tough guys played by Billy Crudup and Woody Harrelson, and Crudup won an NBR Award for a breakthrough performance by a male. I bet he did. Other performers include Patricia Arquette, Cole Hauser, Enrique Castillo, Jacob Vargas, Sam Elliot, and Penelope Cruz.

The 1998 movie was based on the novel by New Mexico writer Max Evans, and Walon Green’s screenplay won a Spur Award for Best Drama Script from the Western Writers of America. Martin Scorsese co-produced and Stephen Frears was at the helm as director – he’s better known for movies including The Queen, Dangerous Liaisons, and High Fidelity.

Hello? Now I know all this I’m wondering why on earth I haven’t seen this movie. Have you? It sounds like a goodie.

The movie is rated R and was filmed in New Mexico locations including Cerrillos, Galisteo, Las Vegas, Bernal, Espanola and Santa Fe. Doors open at 6:30 for the 7 pm start on October 17, and admission is free.  Take real cash for the Kimo Theatre concessions.

The KiMo Theatre is located at 423 Central Avenue NW.
