Hanes
Editor-in-Chief: Elizabeth Hanes
Elizabeth Hanes hates paying full price. For anything. And she doesn’t think anyone else should pay full price, either.
That’s the simple editorial mission behind ABQ on the Cheap. Hanes strives to bring the best local bargains, freebies, and discounts to her readers so that they can live large on less in the Duke City. From free concerts and events to cheap theater tickets to half price clothing at the thrift store, Hanes and her team research the wide variety of free and cheap things to do, see, eat, hear, and experience in Albuquerque and the surrounding area — and then bring them to readers every day.
“What makes ABQ on the Cheap unique is its focus on local bricks-and-mortar stores,” Hanes says. “Hundreds of websites run lists of coupon codes and discounts available through online retailers, but our mission is to support local businesses — restaurants, retailers, theater groups, and attractions – in our community and to give local residents a way to get out and about in their hometown while still enjoying savings.”
Under Hanes’ leadership, ABQ on the Cheap won the Nickelodeon Parents’ Picks Awards 2009 in the “Best Local Blogs” category, an unexpected honor.
Hanes holds a degree in Creative Writing from the University of New Mexico and has been working as a writer since 2001.
Assistant Editor: Tania Casselle
Tania is a freelance writer whose mission is to enjoy the good things in life without busting the budget. She’s the author of the Insiders’ Guide to Albuquerque, due in bookstores in April, and contributes to national and local publications and radio. She’s all about value for money, from free events and fabulous places to visit, to bargain shopping, or fine dining for a canny price tag. (Her ultimate ambition is to find a deal combining chocolate, spas, and shoes… If you have one of those to offer, she’s your gal.) Tania is an import from London, so begs your forgiveness on any Brit-speak that slips in.
Editor-at-Large: Ron, Undisputed King of the Freebies
Longtime reader Ron is a retired engineer who knows how to get a free lunch (and more) every day of the week in Albuquerque. His frequent contributions to the site have earned him the title Editor-at-Large and the sincere gratitude of the editor!
